I just wanted to say hi. Im a long time van halen fan that was looking for a good forum to join, and since I couldnt find a van halen one, this was next best. Im 30 years old and I grew up on van halen, literally. Jump is the first song I can remember hearing. Eddie is my favorite guitar player ever and a personal inspiration. I own a wolfgang, ive had it since 02 I think. im so excited about the new album and tour, im actually seeimg them in michigan on night 2. First time that ive seen them with roth, couldnt go to the last tour because of finacial reasons. I have seen vh with sammy twice, and I saw both singers during the sammy and dave tour. Well thats enough for now, gladvto be here and rock on!!!

'Sup Mikeyj!!

Lemme tell you welcome to the best VAN HALEN site on the net, where we celebrate Van Halen and David Lee Roth 24/7 and then some...

We laugh, cry, fight, drink, smoke and scratch our nutsacks and/or vaginas with a belligerent enthusiasm not found anywhere else...

BTW, where did you see the Sham and Dave show ??

Dte energy music theater (used to be called pine knob). It was a pretty kick ass concert really. I bet the show im going to next month will be better though.

Btw, whats everyones expectations for the new album? I think if they have one song that makes it into mainstreem radio, that would be a major success. Ive onlu heard tattoo and shes the woman. I like tattoo, but I dont love it. I would compare it to girls gone bad, a goo album cut song but by no means a classic hit like panama. Shes the woman on the other hand, from what ive heard has gotten me excited.

Im just glad to see eddie healthy, happy, and playong a mean guirar again. When I saw them in 04 he was quite disappointing. Everybody has their reason for liking vh, and forvme its eddie. Imo he is the secound most influential guitar player behind jimi hendrix.

Edward was quite a let down on the '07 tour as well. He didn't suck but he didn't live up to Eddie Van Halen at all...but I think we will see the real Eddie this time around...

After letting Tattoo grow on me I have high hopes for the new album. But I must admit that Tattoo wouldn't be any better than an average Van Hagar song without Dave, so we will see...

See, now I'd say that Tattoo sounds more like a Dave solo song, nothing particularly "VH" about it. I'm reserving judgement until I hear the whole album and have time to absorb it on my own time/terms. However, on a positive note, I'd rather the album swing towards Dave solo stuff than Van Hagar cuz Dave should know best what complements his vocal and lyrical style. I have come to turns that we will never get anything as exciting, that gets into your soul, as the early stuff, but that's probably just a reflection that time marches on. [Sigh]

It does sound like solo Dave, but the guitar behind the chorus sounds like Edward and the solo is very Van Halenish for sure...

I wish it had the off beat drums like Down In Flames instead of the straight timing...

I think the lack of Michael Anthony's vocals makes it sound more like solo Dave stuff...

Mikeyj122

To me it doesnt sound that much different from the two songs they did with dave for best of volume 1. Me wisr magic and cant get this stuff no more could probably fit well on this album.

I guess everbody hears something different from the new stuff, cause I hear eddies signiture guitar work, so to me it couldnt be more van halenish.

I'll give you the guitar, but it's not really "in your face, Eddie the guitar god is here". Actually, (I'm not a guitar player so maybe that's why) I find Al's drums more distinctive, or at least, they're the first things that make my ears prick up when I hear Vh, or Van Hagar on the radio.

Mikeyj122
01-14-2012, 11:27 AM
Your right, it isnt really smack you in the face guitar, but whens the last time any guitar player really smacked you in the face with a killer riff? I would have to go back to appetite for destruction for that kind of in your face stuff.

But when I listen to it I hear eddie, and thats the great thing about his playing, no one else sounds like him.

I think that's just the trend in music right now. Are there any guitar gods right now, other than the hold overs from the last 2 decades?

Mikeyj122
01-14-2012, 11:42 AM
Well there are some incrediable guitar players out there, check youtube. But like you said the music industry doesnt carevabout or promote thst kind of music anymore.

Well, I live in a musical wasteland where music is marketed by the DJ who mixed it, not the artist. And my bro who is my pipeline is so stuck on pre-Black Album Metallica right now, I'm kind of floating out here in outerspace, clinging to the 80s too.

Mikeyj122

Their is still good new music out there, just harder to find. Its not played on the radio.

You know I joined this site with hopes of sharing my van halen excitement with some like minded individuals, but nothing could be further from the truth. It seems to me that some members of this board dont like people that think differently than they do. My topics either get bashed or deleted entirely, which is bs. I'm not trying to cause trouble with anyone , but im not gonna back down either. Someone please tell my it is bad to have an open discussion about hard rock vs heavy metal or to have a conversation about which van halen album everyone thinks is best? Please elaborate

Your thread didn't get deleted, it got moved, by me....

And why, you ask?

Because you started a thread asking quite probably the most often-talked about topic in the 12 year history of these boards....

What's your favorite Van Halen album? Are you serious?

You can discuss anything you want, but USE THE SEARCH FEATURE....

I had a copy of the boxed set that came out when Ryko disc upgraded David Bowie's catalogue in the nineties. It contained the original version of the song, which (believe it or not), was planned as a duet. The other guy backed out at the last minute, so Bowie went ahead by himself.

OK, according to the Sound+Vision set's liner notes, the guy was one John Hutchinson, a guitarist and vocalist. The two had planned to record an entire album of Bowie tunes as duets, for an act called Bowie & Hutch. (Seriously.) Both had performed with a ballerina doing "interpretations" of Bowie and Jaques Brel songs in a sort of pop art outfit called Feathers. The dancer (named Hermione Farthingdale) left, so the duo went onward. "Space Oddity" came about in early 1969 after Bowie took in a screening of Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey (hence the title) and included it in some sort of film called Love You Til Tuesday. The movie flopped, but the moon landing mission was coming up for July, so Mercury records signed Bowie and Hutch to record the song with Paul Buckmaster doing the strings and Gus Dudgeon producing (these two performed the same thing for Elton John a short while later). Hutchinson did show up on the demo track, but was married with a kid, so he chose to bail out a few days before recording was to begin. Apparently (based upon the recording), this was a good decision.
