Anyone hear why yet? I've seen rumors on a Penn State that the Westboro Baptist idiots were going to protest the show and Penn State didn't want to hire the extra security detail for the BJC. Is this true?

Van Halen concert at Bryce Jordan Center canceled, fans disappointed
Mike Hricik
Collegian Staff Writer

State College area fans of legendary rock band Van Halen will have to go elsewhere to hear hits like “Jump” and “Runnin’ with the Devil” for the group’s North American tour this year.

A concert featuring Van Halen originally scheduled for Monday, March 26 at the Bryce Jordan Center has been canceled.

Bernie Punt, sales and marketing director for the BJC, declined to provide a reason for the cancellation but said it was not the venue’s decision.

Opening act Kool and the Gang would have joined Van Halen for the show.

Tickets purchased with a credit card through Ticketmaster, the BJC, Eisenhower Auditorium, the Penn State Downtown Theatre Center or Penn State Altoona will be automatically refunded to those credit cards, Punt wrote in an email.

Only 116 students had purchased tickets through credit card before the cancellation, he wrote.

Tickets bought with cash, check or Lion Cash will need to be returned to the BJC box office for processing, either in person or through the mail, Punt wrote.

Ticket holders can return their tickets via mail to Van Halen Refunds, Bryce Jordan Ticket Office, 240 Bryce Jordan Center, University Park, PA 16802.

Refund requests will be processed and a check will be mailed for the original amount, he wrote.

This process could take 10 to 14 days as refunds are sent through the mail.

The tour stop would have promoted “A Different Kind of Truth,” Van Halen’s newly released album featuring David Lee Roth on his first recording with the group since the best-selling “1984.”

Sam August bought tickets for the concert the day they went on sale with his friend after stopping and seeing Van Halen’s tour date flash on the electronic sign outside the BJC.

August (sophomore-English) said that he expects low ticket sales were to blame for the cancellation, indicating the “anti-rock” musical interests of Penn State students.

“Avicii and Dayglow will sell out in like an hour, but Van Halen gets cancelled,” he said. “It sucks for the fans.”

He said people may have also bought tickets to Van Halen’s tour dates in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, which were announced before the University Park appearance.

Brett Corl said he’s disappointed that the BJC will be deprived of hard rock this semester.

“College students like when the BJC brings a rapper who’s been popular for six weeks,” Corl (junior-engineering science) said. “That’s part of the reason we never get any really big rock acts.”

Low ticket sales...

Well fuck.

I just got a Live Nation email for Madonnas tickets (Los Angeles) going on sale Saturday.. HER SHOW ISN'T UNTIL OCTOBER!

Van Halen comes out in January with some info and secret show. Few weeks later the album comes out. And nearly instant concerts will begin.

October is too long. 3 weeks is too short. I remember the days of buying tickets & having to stare at them for what? 10-12 weeks?

Big news for Reading as Van Halen has just announced March 26 as the date they (and Kool and The Gang) will be at the Sovereign Center touting their new album. With the good news came some bad as they also announced the cancellation of their show at the Bryce Jordan Center in State College. Sucks to be a Van Halen fan in state College.

mellow WARF at the Roth Army? What's the world coming to?

I'm from there. Should I start?
The people drive so slowly you have to tap on the windows and take their pulse to see if rigor mortis has set in.
Van Halen may have had tough sales but when the fuckin Mummers parade comes to town the people stain their drawers.

I got out but I did go back years later and caught Roth at the Silo.
He was respectful to Eddie when the crowd chanted Eddie sucks, he diffused them quickly.
class act, that one.

I did something similar to a "hat-cam" on the 1998 Van Cherone tour ---- I snuck in a very small mini-DV camcorder and recorded footage while a tour t-shirt was draped over my head ---- security never saw me and I recorded about 4 songs (once the sun went down).

This is back in the day when all cameras were forbidden ---- and I would've have gone apeshit if some security asshole tried to confiscate my $1000 camera.

Guys..I am exhausted I will post online tomorrow. But the show was incredible. I so envy whoever is going 'again'. Complete surprise, but I have to say my favs in order are Reading, AC then Philly. I had great seats perhaps that is why..but everything about the show including Blood & Fire and J cryin it was really great. I have to figure out a way to get to another show...After 3 in about 3 weeks, you would think that is enough considering the setlists are fairly similar...BUT they are so spot on, it is like a addiction....

Till tomorrow...

This is back in the day when all cameras were forbidden ---- and I would've have gone apeshit if some security asshole tried to confiscate my $1000 camera.

For Diver Down tour at Forum had 2nd row center and palmed Cannon A-1, while being frisked kept it high in back and waved other hand to keep him off point at 6'2" pulled it off. Knew I was gonna get shook down and as soon as we got to seats guy made me open and obliged with the old roll I knew would be gone. Had 2 other rolls strategically placed. Half into show tried n got popped again. But for encore pulled out last and went to town with 400 film. You can see VH security ready to pounce but enough people rushed the barrier and they were too busy to get me. Got some killer ones for film and tough shooting, quick up and downs as I could. Very proud I pulled it off and few years back shared with Zloz at his studio and even He was impressed!

The goofy Dave tour with Mambo Slammers in Vegas was funny. You sat at tables of 8 and in very front had snuck in best Sony at the time. Sat it on table and had entire show going under jacket. Dave got a funny look near end and ran off stage right. Next thing I know Big Ed was tapping my shoulder, come the fuck with me.
We went around side of stage and he went into verbal assault bout charges and Raged. Took my tape Hi8, was the shit at the time, And camera! He wanted me thrown out! Went back to enjoy last couple minutes of show with all peeps jaw dropped at what just happened. One of them had walked up during rage to calm him down sayin we drove in from LA for fun not to ruin great night.
After was kinda sick thing lost a grand and my tape, went to concierge and luckily it was there but the info I gave Big Ed had to be what was givin to him, had ID and was straight up, got the bitch back!

To this day can't understand what was so bad, I was in no way going to try and sell, no such media as YouTube not even an Internet crept for bulliten board style. Just wanted to enjoy Dave from his show. I do remember that tur was never seen as a good move from most fans let alone industry. Friend I was with used to be a KNAC DJ and word was this was bad move for Dave back then. He had just cut his hair off and was playing all together new style of music for Dave in those days, but it was Dave and I enjoyed it"........all I know is I'd put money that once they watched it, they said this was well done & either Dave or Ed still have it to this day.

Light Up the Sky! Now I will have to see every SoCal show to not miss a single nugget. Blood & Fire was highlight at Forum last month and it's great knowing they are listening, Trouble with Never is not that great live, BnF and Stay Frosty instead of China Town is way to go. The Take Your Whiskey, Fools, Sinners Swing and In a Simple Rhyme will be in the sets by June. At this point they might even throw in Loss of Control to show us this ones for Us.

Thank you VH for the perfect disc, shows, sets and giving us what we want! This shit makes me smile while our family is in final days of Moms battle of 'C'. All VH from before Christmas to now has taken been perfect to brighten the days.

That's fuckin' awesome!

Dave still has to be careful in those higher ranges....the "We Came, we came, we came" is really a strain on his voice.

But it's great to hear this in the show!!

Damn!! Blood and Fire is back in...that's great...The Trouble with Never is great but, Blood and Fire should stay in simply for Dave to say the "Told ya I was comin' back" part...the video of it on Youtube...and even with only 7000 people there, the crowd pop during that part sounded huge!!

Actually, in re-listening to it, it seems what's giving me the problem is actually Wolfie's harmonies.....not Dave's vocal.

Wolfie should be singing the exact same note as Dave to boost it and pound it home, not stretching way up for some Michael Anthony-esque two-part harmony that really isn't in the studio recording.

It's great to hear this in the show.

Man...I hope they extend the tour and come back this way again.

I forget what song they were in at the AC show when they stopped it and soaked in the applause...but the "Told ya I was comin' back" part is a natural for that same treatment.

Notes:
This was Van Halen's first ever performance in Reading, PA. While it's not the most convenient place to get to, it was kinda cool for one time to take in a VH show at a 7,000 seat arena in the middle of nowhere. These are the kinds of places Van Halen would play 30 years ago when they made it a point to hit virtually every city in the USA, like Pocatello ID, Salina KS, Johnson City TN, Binghamton NY, etc. So I pretended like I was travelling back in time, even moreso than one normally would for a VH show.

Another nice warm recording, my most centered and least echo-y of the four I've done so far. I wish the high frequencies had turned out better and thus I can't give it an "A." I had lots of buffoons around me including many people who tried to sneak down to the floor, only to be removed by security. Unfortunately, it got to the point where a security guard asked to see my ticket during "Blood and Fire." Thankfully he didn't notice the mics clipped to my collar. Also, I'm thankful that the mics cut out a decent amount of the extracurricular activity around me.

So we got a bit of a curveball tonight, with Jamie's Cryin' performed for the first time since July 3, 2008, and the first performance of Blood And Fire since the tour rehearsals in February. The word from a credible source is that Light Up The Sky was rehearsed three times at soundcheck and was on the official setlist, but was scratched at the last minute because Roth did not want to perform it. Girl Gone Bad was played instead.

The performance by the Van Halens was tight as has been the norm on this tour. Roth remains the weak link though he was better tonight than in Atlantic City. He at least pretended he wanted to be there, he engaged the crowd and he did some improv, especially during Everybody Wants Some. He also scolded the crew before She's The Woman and during I'll Wait. I'm not sure why this continues to be a problem on this tour.

Review: Van Halen rocks, but vocals rocky
Jon Fassnacht
Reading Eagle

For much of Monday night's concert, David Lee Roth's vocals struggled to be heard clearly above the powerful racket being made by his Van Halen bandmates.

That wasn't a bad thing.

The one-of-a-kind lead singer, back leading the band that made him famous 30 years ago, gave a packed Sovereign Center a wildly uneven performance.

Prancing around in front of a mammoth, high-definition screen, Diamond Dave, 57, certainly was fun to watch. He unleashed spin kicks, contorted himself into a variety of positions, twirled the mic stand like a martial artist and seduced a woman in the front row during an extended take of "Everybody Wants Some."

But his vocals were all over the place. He forgot words, he had trouble staying in time and his attempts at hitting some difficult notes - for example, the "Can't you see what I mean" line in show closer "Jump" - were often cringe-inducing.

A shame, because the cymbal-heavy chugging backbeat provided by the Van Halen family members sounded as powerful and infectious as ever.

Really, is it possible to hear the first minute of "Hot for Teacher" and not be ready to take on the world?

Guitarist Eddie and drummer Alex, both pushing 60, sound like musicians half their age.

Bassist Wolfgang - Eddie's son - actually is half their age.

The 21-year-old wasn’t even born until the band was well into the Sammy Hagar era.

The younger Van Halen was almost a nonentity, his contributions overpowered by the ferocious playing of his father and uncle. His lone moment in the spotlight was the brief one-note intro to "Runnin' With the Devil."

Not surprisingly, the band culled nearly half of the 22-song set from its 1978 self-titled debut and "1984," the mega-selling albums that bookended Roth's first stint with the band.

Also not surprisingly, many of those songs - "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love," "You Really Got Me," "Ice Cream Man," "I'll Wait," "Panama" - got the biggest responses.

But the band dug deep a few times for the diehards in attendance, dusting off early rockers "Romeo Delight" and "Somebody Get Me a Doctor."

"A Different Kind of Truth," this year's reunion album, also comprised a nice chunk of the 110-minute set. Of the five songs played from the album, the single "Tattoo" and the pounding "China Town" made the biggest impression.

The set also featured two unaccompanied solos: a brief rumble by Alex and a lengthy excursion by Eddie, which included a heavy dose of his trademark tapping and incorporated segments of his legendary solo piece, "Eruption."

Fans likely did a double-take when they saw who the band tapped to be its opening act.

About the only things Van Halen and R&B/funk veterans Kool and the Gang have in common is a string of hits in the '80s and namesake band members.

Only two founding members of the group remain, including bassist Robert "Kool" Bell, but the groove remains.

Dressed entirely in white, the 10-piece band couldn't have done a better job kick-starting the evening, with 50 minutes of nearly nonstop energy.

The interplay was tight and the arrangements were loose, allowing the band members to solo, which they did, and get the crowd to chant, which they did.

Kool and the Gang wisely chose to bypass its popular ballads, sticking to '70s funk classics like "Ladies' Night," "Hollywood Swingin' " and "Jungle Boogie," and '80s rock-tinged hits like "Tonight" and "Misled."

By the time the set came to a close with - what else? - "Celebration," much of the arena was on its feet, singing along.

I'm a bit puzzled by this remark. Has anyone seen a show whereby Dave appeared to be mailing his enthusiasm in? Sure, he's clearly getting his throat kicked in with the non-stop-barrage sets they've been doing, but pretending to want to be there? Doesn't sound like the Dave I had seen.

Yeah, Wolf sounds great, but I too think his high reaching tone in this song live is throwing Dave a bit of a curve ball. I'd love it if Ed would chime in with his growl on that chorus but I'm thinking he's staying away from it because the vocal melody is different from the guitar melody.

Honestly, I met Lou at Atlantic City, real nice guy. I have to admit, he was right about Dave and the A.C. show.....I was thinking....maybe the band or Dave in particular were just tired. Let's face it, their not spring chickens anymore. The show was definitely streamlined and quickened. You could tell Dave's voice was raspy, he had a drink of water during one of the songs to help his voice. I even noticed on one of the videos I took that Dave was clearing his throat in between sinsging the lyrics. Don't get me wrong, I never thought I would be going to shows with Dave and VH...and I'm grateful, but his timing was definitely off on some tunes and they need to take China Town out of the set and replace it with a different new song. It's a bad ass tune but honestly, Dave butchered it in A.C. The one positive to Dave's voice catching up with him was he really didnt try to strain his voice too much with the upper register and kept his tone where it belongs. Maybe I'm comparing the A.C. show too much to the MSG shows, especially the second one....but there was definitely not the same electricity. Still enjoyed the hell out of the show. I don't think Dave was mailing it in, but I do think it was probably agreed by the band before the show....hey, let's grind through this one and move on to the next city. Not that they mailed it in, but it was more of a business first approach. I'm sure their not the first band to do that.

I actually agree with this as well fourthcoming. I had posted (but I did not see anyone else post the same) that we thought maybe Dave was under the weather for the AC show. I also thought he was in a hurry perhaps he did not feel well. I saw them in Reading last night and he seemed back again. I thought Dave was more physical in AC (kicks, split) etc because maybe he could not get his voice where he wanted or ran out of energy to sing. However, I do think the raspy-ness helped him keep his voice range lower to a point.

Perhaps he is just tired. They get a break in a few days to catch up...

STILLL that being said I LOVED THE SHOWS and no complaints. I would even love to go to more... It is just when you go to multople shows you do start to compare:).

My husband and I even said that he would never complain probably...they just have to go on with the show.

I don't think Dave was mailing it in, but I do think it was probably agreed by the band before the show....hey, let's grind through this one and move on to the next city. Not that they mailed it in, but it was more of a business first approach. I'm sure their not the first band to do that.

Fucking KILLER!

What this band is doing with the setlist on this tour is just fucking great. If they throw out LUTS at one of these shows, I will jizz myself.

While nothing they would do at this point, would surprise me, I am grateful they are still surprising me. Make sense?

Hell no. When do you think you started making sense?

I don't recall Jamie's Cryin' being played during the last tour, but they're saying it was?

It was on every boot I have......

They need to drop Blood And Fire or the whole band needs to get together to rehearse it some more... sorry, but it sounded pretty bad... just like it did during the pre-tour show

I would rather here Trouble With Never. B & F is a nice song and the most polished on the CD, but it doesn't rock enough for me. I hope they keep mixing it up and bringing in new stuff. Maybe the shit that ends up sounding the best will end up on a "live" CD !! Light Up The Sky would be awesome but Dave would struggle with that high stuff. But I say bring it once or twice !

Blood and fire sounded fine to me, it didn't look like the greatest recording in the world. I'm sure it sounded great LIVE. Now I may be the only one, but would you lazy bastards please type the whole song name when talking about a song instead of hail for example. I know the whole van halen and Dave solo catalog, but it took me about 3 minutes to figure this one out, and I probably wouldn't have gotten it that quick if they were not playing it on tour.

[/QUOTE]

If VH adds Blood and Fire, Stay Frosty, and In a Simple Rhyme to the setlist for their hometown gigs, I'll be in heaven and I wouldn't wanna leave my cloud.:angel10:

Hmmm...thoughts?

His lone moment in the spotlight was the brief intro riff to "Runnin' With the Devil."
