For some reason, I'm not totally on board with "Stay Frosty" yet.

It's definitely a grower for me, and once it kicks into gear it really rocks.

But the early parts of the song seem a little rough. I know it's a blues riff and Dave is jamming along, but it sometimes sounds like he's trying to jam too many lyrics in at once, and then the "Stay Frosty" comes in a little late and "rushed." Anyone else picking that up?

There is something funny about the timing on the acoustic part but I think it's deliberate.

I agree with ya Sesh...it very likely is deliberate.

But it causes an issue for me for some reason.

On the other hand, part of the charm of CVH has been the whimsical "fuck it" attitude and just let the tape roll...so I'll look at it from that perspective.

I agree that vocally, it's an aweful lot crammed in a tight spot, but I also think in about 6 months time, we'll all be singing along with it like we've known the song for years. I love that all of their songs are either "growers" or dynamite right out of the gate. They are for the most part, incapable of producing a clunker. I'm, ofcoarse talking about the band with Dave and Ed at the helm exclusively.

Yeah...a little bit...however, if it didn't have the rushed quality it would have sounded a bit TOO much like a ripoff of Ice Cream Man, rather than like an homage...

Many of the lyrics are grin-inducingly silly, but once it kicks into gear when the band first joins in...I just can't stop smiling.

Dave lets a great scream rip toward the the end of tune while Ed is soloing...although undoubtedly Calderone will say said scream was a case of the band sampling it from one of the 6 pack albums:winkglasses:

This song is fucken magical. It's one of the best things VH ever did, period. The Rolling Stone reviewer said it's "4 minutes of why VH is awesome." I saw on iTunes that other than Tattoo (which people bought because it was the single), it's the top-selling song on the album.

I think DLR's "ow-ow-ows" are brought to the front a wee-bit too much, but that's my only beef here. His bluesy voice--which cannot be duplicated--is on fully display and when the electric and acoustic guitars smash together, it's boner time. The ending is phenomenal, as well. Great number!

Catfish
02-15-2012, 05:29 PM
Do we know if it's DLR playing the acoustic? I'd like to think that's him--it's certainly his sound. If it is him, I hold out hope that it can be done live.

My daughter was in her room getting ready for school this morning and she's got her obnoxiously loud stereo cranked - yes, most of the time I let her play it as loud as she freakin' wants - and what do I hear come blaring through the house? Yep, Stay Frosty. On repeat. She bought it off itunes this morning, with her own money of course. Normally I have to approve all purchases - hey, you gotta stay on top of things - and so she says to me, "I went ahead and bought Stay Frosty, I knew you wouldn't mind" and she's grinning away :) And I said "you can download any Van Halen songs/albums you want to." And she said, "yeah, but I'm not buying any of that Sammy stuff. He sucks!" Ok, so maybe I've influenced the kid just a little. Ah, what a way to start the day...my 11 year old buying Van Halen music and playing the hell out of it at full boogie... :gulp:

I like that Dave challenges us to think and open our minds with some of his lyrics... it's part of what puts VH on another level. I really didn't mean to imply anything toward you... I save my insults for the people who deserve them, like Von Halen and ZahZoo.

One of the best parts of Stay Frosty is that after being a big dumb blues stomp it's actually a pretty smart, symmetrical, philosophical song. Dave Lee Roth goes to the four corners of the Earth to study from the ancient masters. And at the end of the day he finds that self determination is the key. Shallow and deep at the same time. Clever but dumb at the same time. Light and shade, light and shade...

I need to just call off from work and go buy a new bottle of Knob Creek and just chill by the pool today. I've fucking' had it...

Kind of weird to hear Dave sing, " Trust Allah" in this song. WTF!!!
Look at the lyrics, second page at the far right column.

Im miffed at this.

Don

i'm guesing you weren't too concerned when dave told you to reach down between his legs. not all lyrics are literal...

Dude do you understand what the song is about now? Can you focus long enough to grasp why you started posting in this thread? The song is about not trusting any religion. The one line about allah is not an endorsement. Are we on the same page now?

Trust in Allah - but tie up your camel. It means no deity really has your back..think for yourself and be ready for anything at a moment's notice (ie: Stay Frosty). Duh. Even my 8 year old gets that.

Really?

I thought it meant Dave's water bong was cashed and he needed to refill his bowl...

Talk to devildawg, not me. Apparently I should have had the 8 year old explain it to him. I KNOW you get it. It's not that deep of a tune.

No shit. Shows the level of paranoia. People hear "allah" and think the terrorists are coming....geez, it's just another word for a mythical creation.

Exactly. We have a federal government that literally refuses to guard our borders during a time of war. We have heavily armed drug thugs coming across the border scaring the shit out of ranchers who live along it. We have had women and children kidnapped and taken out of the country. The federal government not only does nothing but they actually get caught selling automatic weapons to the drug thugs in Mexico. Nothing is done about it.

Meanwhile they use the media and Homeland Security to try and convince us Iran is a problem that needs to be dealt with and radical Islamic terrorists are going to get us if we don't start another war or invade another country that by coincidence always sits on top of oil. Then of course we back Al Quaida in Libya.

Talk about bullshit. Nobody but the most complete brainwashed idiot believes the war on terror charade anymore. With the cold war gone they had to invent something else to justify the military spending. That is what it pretty much boils down to. We went from being a consumer goods economy to a oil/war economy in the last 50 years and it has to invent a reason to still exist.

Stopped by the Links and there's talk over there of Stay Frosty being the next single. Someone posted a photo of the promo cd that has been sent out to the radio stations. :)

If true, hopefully they'll do more with the video this time. Hoping they made a deal with CSI...here, use our song and give us some stripper footage in return...

Daves lyrics work like they have always done on many levels , a line u think is throw away and funny is likely to bite your ass when u get it years later ..
One of my fav lines on the cd "Don't want 'em to get your goat
Don't show 'em where it's hid"

Classic Dave .. And I chose not to interpret it as about live stock ... Tho after seeing his sheep dogs

Heard Stay Frosty on our shitty classic rock station last Friday. So I'm guessing it is the next single.
Our station plays only what is fed to them from Corporate Radio Death World.

Looks like they are not going to bother with a video for it either. I know the Tattoo and She's The Woman vids were nothing to write home about, but at least we got something to put on our Facebook pages to try to attract non-fans.

Sad at this pont. I thnk things might be different if Chinatown was the first single. It kicks ass but still sounds radio friendly. I like Tattoo but I can also see why people don't like it. I wonder if they were still at Warner Bros if it would have faded this fast ? Bottom line is cd's just don't sell anymore. Wonder what Slashs new cd sales are at, or a newer band like Shinedown.
