The Trem with the Mastery Bridge works flawless...
I do like Strat Trems.. but if you have the Jazz setup properly it will work really nice!

I dig the new FENDER hybrid Jags & Jazzmasters....but I have a problem paying that kind of scratch for guitars that were "Student models" when they were originally made...

Or those SONIC YOUTH sig models....Thurston Moore & Cobain bought 'em because you could get Jags & Mustangs & Jazz Masteers dirt cheap back in the day....Moores sig model runs sumthin like $1400! Silly!

I'm looking at knockoff cheap-0 alternatives........

Speaking of student models... I have a 1964 Fender Duo Sonic I'm preparing to refinish/restore. I'll post some pics soon as I get going with the project...

It's an early 64 model before they introduced the Duo Sonic II which was a non-tremolo spin-off of the Mustang. Mine's a true student model 3/4 size with a 22.5" neck scale. The guy I bought it from in 79 had stripped the original Olympic White finish off and varathained it natural. He also installed this ugly fat brass tune-o-matic bridge system on it and didn't get the scale length correct. I figured out an odd set-up to get the intonation close and gigged with it for about 5 years.

Found an original 64 Duo Sonic bridge on e-bay last week and thought I had it made for about $20... last 2 hours some jackasses bid it up over $75 so I had to bail on that. Probably just go buy a new replacement bridge for the current Squire Vibe series Duo Sonics...

It'll never be worth much not being original paint anyway...

Nobody wanted those guitars in the early 80's. Nobody wanted the old early 60's Fender amps either then. Everyone wanted Les Pauls and Marshalls. You could have a brown tolex or blonde tolex early 60's amp and a Jazzmaster for under $500 in a pawn shop score easy.

what if you swap the stock pickups for those YJM duncans? Stacked single coils in a Jag? RAD!!!!

My '68 reissue Strat has the H-3 in the bridge & the YJM in the neck.....that neck pickup is beyond awesome!

I have read that the YMJ is a little brighter than an HS3 and better for the neck position...

But an HS3 is good in the neck, especially on a maple neck...

BTW, the old Fender TBX tone control sounds awesome with HS3s...

I got 68 reissues in my 72 Strat. They get that Hendrix vibe but I was playing by some fluorescent lights and all hell broke lose. The middle pickup isn't counter wound so if I get 60 cycle hum I'm fucked. In other words it's a real Strat.:biggrin:

Or you could always apply to The Revolution & play alongside Prince.

I'm torn in too many directions on the bridge replacement... but I'm leaning heavily on staying close to stock. Newer modern bridges are more functional... but just don't look right on an old vintage beast, IMO.

The pickups had been replaced before I bought the guitar. The neck pickup came out of a '62 Strat and has that warm, beer and smoke soaked perfect Blues tone. I may replace the bridge pickup which is a late 70's Dimarrzio Distortion single coil which sounds good dirty but a little harsh clean. Hard part is finding something that blends well between the two... there's something about how the older pickups age and the magnets loose a bit of their juice.

Matt will probably agree that the stacked humbucker "Yngwie" pickups, either the Dimarzio HS3, or possibly even better the new Duncan YMJ, will give you real vintage Fender tone...

The output on these are roughly the same as vintage Strat pickups and have great bell like clarity with zero hum...

I used an HS-3 for years in neck position of the 1st incarnation of the Charvel mutt, they're very cool, but a little "blah" sounding IMO (unless you're going for the Yngwie neck position solo tone); they don't really cut it for say, SRV tones or way clucky Strat tones. I'm interested to try the YJM, or maybe the Vintage Hot Strat Stack.

Interesting, but no tone control on that guitar, and not into the idea of drilling it for one...
