I've been banging on this drum for the past 8 years, but I just thought I'd type a friendly little reminder.
How it's still relevant amazes me, and actual kind of angers me. There's so much better music out there, and there's probably a ton of great groups that don't get airplay.
Tired of it, the whining, the shitty guitarplaying, the looks of the bands that look more like bouncers at a club then you're average rock singers post-Cobain.
If there's anyway we could kill off this shit movement, I'd be all for it.

I'm not following, grasshooper.....
Are you forced to listen to it at work?
Does your town only have 1 radio station?
Do your roommates play it constantly?
If so, then I get the beef....
Otherwise, wtf?
I hate many genres of music, hence I don't listen to, or purchase said genres....
But I dont begrudge people who do like the shit.
I personally have some pretty far-fetched tastes, from Rat Pack to Reggae to Cowpunk.
There's probably 3 billion people on this planet that hate all 3.
:gulp:
That's the beauty about music, it's not up to a vote. No one is voting Math-Prog Polka off the island,

Enjoy what you enjoy, and don't listen to what you hate.

Don't know what you mean by 'Nu Metal' - it's been dead for YEARS. That term generally means bands who are influenced by Korn. Heavily downtuned, soft/heavy, soft/heavy dynamics, and hip hop beats/rapping. After 2003, it died.
Metalcore, however, is still going. I've never undertood why. Killswitch Engage are/were a great band, but the hordes of copyists are getting tired. August Burns Red show how it should be done, but if I hear one more band who screams the verse and puts on a melodic chorus I may explode!
That being said, most modern metal owes far more to prog, death metal and the really rather awesome stuff that has been coming out of Scandanavia for 20 years that it does metal core. In a world where Lamb of God can hit the US charts, extreme metal really is alive and kicking.

'Mathcore'. Any band that uses the Dillinger Escape Plan template - lots and lots and lots of riffs and crazy time signatures which changes every 3 or 4 bars. At it's best - Dillinger - its outstanding and invigorating. At it's worst its a sea of endless complexity which nothing to steer the listener through the chaos.

.
But somehow it's all part of the same matrix ya dig?
Sting was punk. You hear those influences in The Police which was not punk. You then hear the influences of The Police in his later solo material. Constant morphing & moving thing music is. It's pretty cool.
But on the flip side, I do agree the metal music that's been popular the last decade sucks ass. Unlistenable, which is sad because a few sound like they got some really cool rhythm going only to be ruined by some skinhead dipshit going "AAAARRRRRRRRRGGGGHHHHHHHHGGGGAAARRRGGGLLLEE!!!!!!"
Meh...try to ignore it. Hate is NOT the opposite of love.
Indifference is.

Nu Metal died a LONG time ago (at least I think so).I would like to think that it was a very dark movement in music we can all sweep under the rug and forget about. As for the rest of it around today, hey it is not all bad.I know it ain't a patch on the metal of the 80's and it never will be.I gave up looking for the next band with a sound like Megadeth a long time ago.I see it as a case of small victory's with newer stuff. For example I would not say I am a Lamb of God fan as such, but i do dig some of the albums.Metal is a completely different beast to how it was back in the day.It is just a matter of outlook and if you can filter through the crap then you will find a few decent albums.Take it even further and get into some of the more obscure bands and i bet you will fond some you like
So for now you can let go of the hate unchainme,Your quest is at it's end.You won.Sit back, crack a beer and start your new journey :)

What I mean by this, is stuff like Hinder, Shinedown, Five Finger Death Punch, Three Days Grace, Nickelback, etc. For some bizarre reason the two local rock stations consider it a still a viable genre of music.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y7NVxAMQn_I&ob=av2n
Here's an example.
Perhaps it's just in ohio? I feel at times the local media is very much behind the times in terms of what gets played, and what doesn't. I really wish, at the very least the local rock stations would mix it up a bit.

Hey Binnie, are you familiar with Thee Speaking Canaries? They're labeled Math Rock but to me, they just sound like a '90s alternative band with heavy early '80s EVH influence. They actually have an original song that has their version of the Us Festival GGB jam plopped right it the middle of it. They also do a pretty shitty cover of Secrets, but their originals are engaging. I admire someone who uses tapping for rhythms rather than solos. It's a refreshing use of the technique. In any case, I have no idea if they are still active, but I still love blasting some of their stuff. A decent Indie act IMO.

All I know about them is they did a pretty good job remaking Simple Man. A little bit too much yelling type singing, but a solid version nonetheless.
But nothing beats the original.
Oh wait.....did they do that song with the line "I dare you to tell me to walk through fire..."? I have heard that that line in concert is a tape because the guy can't really hit it like he does in the recording. Cool tune though. So I know of 2 songs from them if indeed this song is them.

That's what makes a good song for me, a riff that you want to hear again and again and during the chorus you can't wait for it to come back and hit you again. That shit where they change the whole song every four bars breaks up that feeling and renders the whole thing monotonous in it's ramdomness, like jazz. It just turns into pointless wanking.

But to produce a 25 year old formula shouldn't be a problem when it's fresh and hot polished for nowadays.
My theory is always that if you come up with something the younger generations didn't hear so far, it's automatically fresh to their ears.

Sorry Binnie. Not your fault. I've kinda had a thing lately for trying to derail threads so blame me for this mess. But it's funny. Ratt is one of those bands that you think ...man, I really dig these guys but I'm afraid to admit it because I'm sure no one else still does....and then wow! Everyone comes out of the shadows to say they still dig them. Kinda cool.
Back to the reason for this thread though, if even possible, I really fucking hate 99.999% of new metal. NOT because it's too heavy. But it either sounds too calculated, the singer does nothing but scream, or it's way too heavy on the "hey man, we are tough & will kick your ass" image. Hate dudes like that.
Melody & groove. make it heavy, make it light....doesn't matter. If a song has good melody & groove it won't matter if it's Michael Jackson singing Thriller or Slayer singing Crooked Cross....it will be good. And it can't be overthought. According to the books this should have groove? NO! When you jam it in the garage is your mom tapping her toes to it while she folds the laundry in the next room?

It's like metal by numbers. They think they can create heavy out of nothingness. They figure fast is heavy, so faster must be heavier and screaming is heavy, so more gutteral drunken vomiting type screaming MUST be even heavier. There is no original thinking, just looking at what has already been done to death and trying to even more ______ER. Everyone is trying to be the ______EST and _______EST and _________ER than everyone else, which ultimately yields sameness and boredom.
They don't GET what makes a song cool, as Jhale mentioned above, the guitar lick to Lay It Down is as heavy as weapons grade plutonium.

I don't know anymore what's considered what in terms of metal, hard rock, nu metal, death metal, etc. Tried to follow the VH1 Classic show Metal Evolution but got frustrated with his classification system. I like some of the relatively new metal and rock, like Godsmack, Disturbed, and I especially like Slipknot. I think they get a bad rap or get overlooked cause of the masks, but when I started listening to them, I love the music. I think Corey Taylor (lead singer - Slipknot) is very talented vocally and has quite a range. He also respects alot of the old metal and rock bands. There's even a youtube video of him singing Ice Cream Man and he does a good job. I also think he's smart and hilarious when you hear him speak. Just my opinions. Also love Ratt BTW!

Sorry for turning this into a Corey Taylor/Slipknot thread, but I gotta post this one more cause I really love it - you can tell he's trying to do Dave, which I appreciate.

Corey Taylor is hands down one of the best "metal" singers out there next to Chris Cornell. (Yeah I no, Chris is not really metal)

I think 1 problem is a band will hear the heaviest stuff out there & think..."we need to outdo them by 1". Which is a big reason Spring Break girls are such whores nowadays, same concept. They used to flash their boobs. Then everyone was doing it so they needed to step it up to get attention. Then they flashed the ass. Then the front. Now you got drunk girls on a boat eating pussy while getting rammed from some random guy from behind all on tape in front of 300 people. Gotta outdo the chick before to get the attention right?
So these bands use that same mentality and forget about the whole notion of just being really good. They are fun to listen to for a couple minutes just out of curiosity, but just like the spring break girls, it's nothing you want in your car for very long or anything you would want to take home with you.
A song doesn't need to be chaotic, loud, screaming, or lightning fast to be heavy as fuck.

And with that being said. I think Kashmir is a heavy song.

True dat.
There's certainly plenty of extreme metal out there, but there's also a lot of variety these days. The most interesting stuff is actually very melodic, and welds the beauty and the beast. Prog is very prominent in metal at the moment....

I think that's true for some of them, but there are a few that are chaotic, loud, screaming, and fast that are also really good and stand out to me. Aside from the ones I mentioned, I really like Lamb of God, Avenged Sevenfold, As I Lay Dying, Sevendust.....I only like the ones that have some melody and mix up the screaming, gutteral vocals with more melodic singing.

Not a fan of Slipknot at all...
But those covers were damn good, amongst the best I've heard. Kind of wish he'd ditch slipknot and teamed him up with a REAL Band, and had him do more songs much more like Van Halen and Classic Metal groups were like.

You can check out Stone Sour - he sings for them too and they're a little more like traditional rock than Slipknot. Still love Slipknot myself - #2 next to VH.

Also, I've said it for years, AIC should've hired Sully Erma from Godsmack in a Tim "Ripper" Owens role, dude can match Layne. No disrespect towards Duvall who's done a great job, but damn!

This is the truth. Stone Sour are awesome. Their second record - 'Come Clarity' - is the strongest. Not a cookie monster in sight.....

I'll bet hanging out with Shannon was a lot of fun. Knew him when Wrathchild (before they had to add America) played here all the time. He was a blast. Believe it or not, he was the one all the chicks wanted to hook up with, at least the ones interested in hooking up with someone.

Well yeah. I dig super fast. Sometimes it's called for. I don't like being fast just for the sake of being fast (Yngwie). But if the guys think "hey, this will sound really killer super fast" then I'm all for it. Slayer has some ultra fast stuff that I dig, then they have Seasons In The Abyss which is really slowed down...which I also dig.
As long as the end result is a groovin' tune......

ewww...didn't know. I meant it in a good way. I love Captain Caveman. Was one of my favorite cartoons as a kid. The shit he would pull out of his leather wrap was hilarious. LOL.
I miss the old cartoons after school & Saturday mornings.
