The greatest songs ever written.

You know the ones, there is some ethereal experience
when you hear them. They could have been composed 500 years ago,
yet resound purposely with power, emotion and relevance at any moment,
no matter when you may hear them in life.

They are the music that come from the purest source of inspiration.

There seems to be this source of inspiration that we cant comprehend
or acess on command, yet sometimes have fleeting moments of access to.

The great composers were/are fortunate to be given more frequent access than us mere mortals.

I have to admit dabbling in unconventional methods in attempting to obtaining access
on demand. The remnants of those experiments dragging unwanted shadows
into my life.

But to spring back to the incredulous joy of hearing the music that
just "breaks your heart and soul into bloodrushed attention"

What songs does it for you ?

Timeless, Im thinking (without thinking deeply)

-Bridge over troubled water (Simon and garfunkel)
-Yesterday (Beatles)
-Greensleaves (Not written by King Henry as popular belief)
-Silent Night (Crikies this is powerful stuff sung in the right crowd)
-Goodbye to Romance, Ozzy and Randy...

LOL on the Ozzy one in there, but to my ears its from "the source"
In fact most that album is.

Unchained Melody ?

Bringe em out, I want to rush and tingle.. :)

I love the Walker Brothers - even if they were nothig more than a poor man's Righteous Brothers.

Animal Farm/YRGM - Kinks
Yesterday/Help! - by the Beatles
Vincent - Don McLean
Homeward bound or The boxer S & G.
I would say Heroes & villains, Cal girls, Good vibes and God only knows by the Beach Boys
Pretty woman - Roy Orb
The autumn stone - Small Faces
(just off the top)

And I'm only scraping 20th century surface. Great music, beautiful sound is in the ear of the beholder. So I don't know if my list is going to be universally accepted nor do these need validation.

I have a hunch just based on the last name, there are 2 of them, and you said Aussie band :)

But damn...the picture of that valley on your video. Beautiful! I wonder where that is. I really need to leave the city. So much ugliness here.

IN honor of EASTER

"WHEN THE MAN COMES AROUND"

<object style="height: 390px; width: 640px"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/sFTOznr-_H8?version=3&feature=player_detailpage"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/sFTOznr-_H8?version=3&feature=player_detailpage" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="360"></object>

And I heard, as it were, the noise of thunder: One of the four beasts saying: "Come and see." And I saw. And behold, a white horse.
There's a man goin' 'round takin' names. An' he decides who to free and who to blame. Everybody won't be treated all the same. There'll be a golden ladder reaching down. When the man comes around.

The hairs on your arm will stand up. At the terror in each sip and in each sup. For you partake of that last offered cup, Or disappear into the potter's ground. When the man comes around.

Hear the trumpets, hear the pipers. One hundred million angels singin'. Multitudes are marching to the big kettle drum. Voices callin', voices cryin'. Some are born an' some are dyin'. It's Alpha's and Omega's Kingdom come.

And the whirlwind is in the thorn tree. The virgins are all trimming their wicks. The whirlwind is in the thorn tree. It's hard for thee to kick against the pricks.

Till Armageddon, no Shalam, no Shalom. Then the father hen will call his chickens home. The wise men will bow down before the throne. And at his feet they'll cast their golden crown. When the man comes around.

Whoever is unjust, let him be unjust still. Whoever is righteous, let him be righteous still. Whoever is filthy, let him be filthy still. Listen to the words long written down, When the man comes around.

Hear the trumpets, hear the pipers. One hundred million angels singin'. Multitudes are marchin' to the big kettle drum.

In measured hundredweight and penny pound. When the man comes around.

And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts, And I looked and behold: a pale horse. And his name, that sat on him, was Death. And Hell followed with him.

I really don't give a crap if people think this stuff (or my liking of it) is wimpy, it's great shit and yeah, it's fucking beautiful, downright gorgeous music. I feel gifted as hell to have heard it.

Simon & Garfunkel from the September 19, 1981 Concert in Central Park. This was subsequently shown on HBO back in the days that I had enough disposable income to afford more than basic cable.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xH-9H75A0Tk&feature=related

A Paul Simon solo song, this version features the rarity of being sung solely by Art Garfunkel. From the same Central Park show, this track would hold special meaning to those witnessing or reflecting upon the events of September 11, 2001, some twenty years later.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTZkk66pd1I

Originally from 1966's Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme album, I'm unsure of where and when this clip was recorded. Not that it matters.

The title track to my favorite album of all time. There isn't a live take in existence that equals the quality of the studio version.

STILL LIFE Peter Hammill , composed in 1975, with Van der Graaf Generator, I copied the lyrics:

Citadel reverberates to a thousand voices, now dumb:
what have we become? What have we chosen to be?
Now, all history is reduced to the syllables of our name -
nothing can ever be the same now the Immortals are here.
At the time, it seemed a reasonable course
to harness all the force of life without the threat of death,
but soon we found
that boredom and inertia are not negative,
but all the law we know
and dead are Will and words like survival.

Arrival at immunity from all age, all fear and all end....
Why do I pretend? Our essence is distilled
and all familiar taste is now drained
and though purity is maintained it leaves us sterile,
living through the millions of years,
a laugh as close as any tear....
Living, if you claim that all that entails is
breathing, eating, defecating, screwing, drinking,
spewing, sleeping, sinking ever down and down
and ultimately passing away time
which no longer has any meaning.

Take away the threat of death
and all you're left with is a round of make-believe;
marshal every sullen breath
and though you're ultimately bored by endless ecstasy
that's still the ring by which you hope to be engaged
to marry the girl who will give you forever -
that's crazy, and plainly
it simply is not enough.

What is the dullest and bluntest of pains,
such that my eyes never close without feeling it there?
What abject despair demands an end to all things of infinity?
If we have gained, how do we now meet the cost?
What have we bargained, and what have we lost?
What have we relinquished, never even knowing it was there?

What chance now of holding fast the line,
defying death and time
when everything we had is gone?
Everything we laboured for and favoured more
than earthly things reveals the hollow ring
of false hope and of false deliverance.

But now the nuptial bed is made,
the dowry has been paid;
the toothless, haggard features of Eternity
now welcome me between the sheets
to couple with her withered body - my wife.

Hers forever,
hers forever,
hers forever
in still life.

For some reason thinking of the chicks tonight, now these songs are not what I listen to all the time or carry around
with me, just appreciation that they seem to have tapped into that fountain of unique inspiration, this song I believe
was written by the artist (Kate Bush) at 14. Its such a good example of what I was trying to say in the first post,
other wordly, timeless, not just in our lives, timeless, and it blows your mind to hear such composition.
Hell, Im a freakin headbanger and dont google kate bush everyday, but a great example of that music from the gods.
I intend on posting my favourite tunes here also, but are wracking the grey matter for obvious examples of brilliance.

Mr Badguy, wasnt there Thick as a Brick 2 in the works ?
Have you heard it, or is it still in the making...

It came out last week.

It's really good, not like the original, but still really good.

I recommend it.

Ford, what's the ONE Rolling Stones song you would choose above all others? Would you go some weird deep cut or one of the biggies?

For The Who I would say Baba Oreilly is just about as perfect a song as there is.

FORD

How the Hell do you pick one song out of a 50 year career? That's impossible. I guess if I were in Hell for eternity and Satan told me I could only listen to ONE Rolling Stones song ever again, I'd have to go with the 1972-73 live version of "You Can't Always Get What You Want". And not the mutated Bob Clearmountain remix from the newly "official" Brussels Affair release either. I'm pretty sure Satan has the bootlegs.......

Nope, not just you. Me either. I like a handful of their songs, but nothing I would classify as spectacular (except Yesterday is pretty great). Just never figured why they are thought of as Gods. Mediocre musicians with a bit of talent in the lyric writing department. Oh well. As long as the people who are fans are enjoying it who cares.

Bad.. U2, the song. Edge feels. King's X has their great tune, Goldilox. Hearing this song performed, with people singing, transcends. Heart-feeling. Joni Mitchell has River. Didn't know it was her. Six Pence None the Richer has a version. Beautiful. Kiss Me, their song, is pretty good. Edie & New Bohemians have O, My Soul. Great riff, heart-feeling singing.

'Have Love Will Travel' by the Sonics - 1959 dudes ... does this kick butt, or what?!

I see that Silvio Dante, man of taste, has picked a Big Star tune - maybe a lot of folks on Roth Army won't know them? From Tennessee, but a bit of a cult band in ... Scotland where I grew up surrounded by a lot of guys who started bands who tried to sound like this. So, here's the amazing 'September Gurls' from '74:

'Caravan', Van Morrison & The Band from the Scorsese movie, The Last Waltz, 1976. If you ain't seen it, watch it to the end - Van the fcking Man.
