Michele Bachmann Granted Swiss Citizenship

Posted: 05/09/2012 10:54 am Updated: 05/09/2012 12:51 pm

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) has been granted citizenship in Switzerland.

Becky Rogness, a spokeswoman for the conservative congresswoman, said in a statement, "Congresswoman Bachmann's husband is of Swiss descent so she has been eligible for dual-citizenship since they got married in 1978." She added, "However, recently some of their children wanted to exercise their eligibility for dual-citizenship so they went through the process as a family."

Bachmann herself discussed the news with a Swiss television station. The former presidential contender said "it's tough to find a place not to like in Switzerland" and laughed off a question on whether she would run for office given that it appears she is eligible to do so in the European country.

For Bachmann, a vocal critic of President Barack Obama's health care reform law, the move comes with a twist of irony. Switzerland has nearly universal health care and mandates that its citizens purchase coverage. Bachmann herself has repeatedly taken issue with the individual mandate included in Obama's law.

She has described health care reform as "the crown jewel of socialism" and argued it amounts to "gangster government."

No...just that her children and Husband and (her secretly) will use Swiss health care off the backs of Swiss Citizens. She will probably use it to get another face lift. I use to live in Europe and know that it rocks. Trust me, she will save a buck or two and it will be hush hush.

Hypocrisy is check and mate of tea party types.

I too have dual Swiss/American citizenship...unfortunately I don't get any perks from it...I pay in for my health insurance here in the great USA and am glad to have some.

To be honest, I probably would do the same thing. Sure the Swiss have a mandate but it's a smaller country without all the ethnic and religious polarization we have here. Again it's not so much the type of system you have but who's managing it. We have a bunch of criminals running ours and the Swiss system is ran so much better. Also, Switzerland is where the world parks it's money. It's a nice haven to go to. I'm sure like most people in congress these days, Michelle has off shore accounts full of insider trading earnings and lobby bribes. It used to be the purpose of serving in the US Congress was to serve the people now it's to become a multi-millionare.
