View Full Version : Does anyone remember Grand Funk?

Van Halen were influenced by Grand Funk. It's in Dave's book. Eddie and Alex loved their concerts because they really put on an "active" show. No standing around for these guys.

In fact, "So This Is Love" is a tip o' the hat, to Grand Funk's Footstompin' Music

I remember something about them taking care of business, and that their business was doing nothing all day. That didn't sound like a very good business plan to me...

That was BTO (Bachman Turner Overdrive) and yes, I hate them and turned off the radio when any of their shit was on.

That album was Closer To Home and the entire album was very good. Also "Survival" and "E Pluribus Funk"

Check out www.markfarner.com to see what the original guitarist/songwriter is up to these days.

He continues to have a great singing voice at age 64.

One of the coolest album covers ever made, complete with 3-D glasses. And the music wasn't anything to sneeze at, either.

I'm really proud of all "my brothers and sisters" here (as Mark would say) to not only remember GFR, but
celebrate the essence of a really good "garage band" that had some damn fine tunes.

btw, Jesus, you should put better songs on from YouTube, than "Come to Jesus". Is it all about you?

Homer Simpson: Nobody knows the band Grand Funk? The wild, shirtless lyrics of Mark Farner? The bong-rattling bass of Mel Schacher? The competent drum work of Don Brewer? Oh, man! Grand Funk Railroad paved the way for Jefferson airplane, which cleared the way for Jefferson starship. The stage was now set for the Alan Parsons project, which I believe was some sort of hovercraft. For more information on Grand Funk, consult your school library!

I recall buying Grand Funk Lives the same day I picked up Iron Maiden's Killers album in 1981. No wonder my hearing started to go a short time later in the decade.

I'd love to get the Shea Concert from 1971; the whole show! GFR was before Rock videos so we're glad for what we can get.

They did play Shea Stadium....only the 4th concert ever at Shea...Humble Pie opened....must have been a great show....my pops was there....said it was a rowdy, good time. They sold out Shea faster than the Beatles.....gotta give em credit.

Survival baby. That is the killer. I Can Feel Him in the Morning i think is my favorite track. When you die you die (die, die, die).

Closer To Home is one of my all-time favourite songs.

Mine too, Angel. In fact the song is very "angelic" and the original version is the best. Apparently a song for the troops in Vietnam.

I was 17 at the time and would have gladly given my left nutsack to be at that show and jump up and down to see if the bleachers would collapse.

I'd love to hear what your pops had to say about seeing them LIVE when they were at the top (and before they succumbed to "pop music"). Humble Pie ("I Don't Need No Doctor")

was very heavy. Steve Marriot gave Mark Farner his white SG Custom after that tour.

Grand Funk should be considered one of the greatest American bands of all time. Right up there with The Doors, Van Halen, The Dead, Creedance, Hendrix and whoever fills out your top ten of American bands.
I remember a story I heard long ago that Mark Farner was having a bad night one night and offered his guitar to anyone in the audience who thought they could do better and Eric Clapton was there but declined his offer. Anybody else here that one?

I've loved this band since childhood...literally! While other kids my age were getting their heads filled with Mother Goose and sissy-ass lullabies, my old man introduced me to the catalogs of Bad Company, Nazareth, and these guys....at maximum volume!

I still listen to their albums today, and "Caught In The Act" remains one of the coolest live albums ever....seriously....EVER!

Still have the "We're An American Band" LP on vinyl and the original "LocoMotion" 45" around here somewhere. Probably a good thing that my censorship-happy mother never saw what was inside the gatefold sleeve of that album.

I couldn't agree more. The first 3 songs, Footstompin, RnR Soul and I'm Your Captain particularly (great version) still rattle my dishes.

When they take such good care of ya',
And all you've got is money?
Before they fool ya',
Please, let me school ya',

I have asked my pops about seeing that show and like so many of the shows he saw back in the day, he can't remember details...He was 21 at the time....I think there were some smokeable substances involved. He did say they were loud, and powerful and said how absolutely rowdy the crowd was. He turned me on to Humble Pie when I was a kid when I stumbpled upon their Live album Rockin The Fillmore. Such an underrated band.

Thanks, fourthcoming. Tell your Dad, I'm 58 and saw them for the first time on October 9th 1971 at Maple Leaf Gardens, just 3 months after their legendary Concert at Shea.

I don't remember the setlist, but I do remember Farner standing on top of his piano and wailing away on guitar. Humble Pie (Rockin' at The Fillmore), was what my buddy used to challenge me with. ("Oh, yeah, listen to this! Well fuck you, listen to this!!) Challenge of the bands, hosted by two drunken weenies trying to outdo each other.

My Fave's are: In Need (Live Album), Footstompin' Music (Caught in The Act), Comfort Me (Survival), Loneliness and People Let's Stop The War (E Pluribus Funk), Flight of The Phoenix (Phoenix) Aimless Lady (Bosnia Live), The Railroad (WAAB), To Get Back In' (Shinin' On), Politician (Born To Die) and Out To Get You (Good Singin'/Good Playin') with Frank Zappa playing a killer lead guitar on that track.

What's their best album? What do you think?

What's their best album? What do you think?

You obviously have Survival, because you know the words to All You Got is Money!! Born To Die is great because GFR got better musically with each album.

If you don't have "Caught in The Act" LIVE, get that one. As Hambone says "It's one of the best LIVE albums ever!

I own all their albums but do my own CD's based on the mood I'm in.

Cheers, Yount!
