Will this drought and record heat ever end?

It's starting to look like Autumn here in the Ozarks... lots of various hardwood trees are turning brown and dropping leaves. Really need rain but afraid thunderstorms will ignite wild fires like crazy. Don't want a Colorado Springs type scenario...

I've about given up on trying to keep my yard alive... don't need my water bill competing with the electric bill for A/C. Plus they've started implementing water rationing...

Thankfully we live on a lake... other wise this would totally suck!!

How your summer cookin..?

Wow, where do you live?

We haven't had a day without rain yet. Just earlier this week we had hail storm for two days. It really hasn't been summer at all. But the garden is green. And the mosquitos are huge. The spanish snail is gonna take over the country, and get in the parliament. Today was actually nice, ONE day we got up to this point.

Edit: Spanish slug in english, not snail.

near Biblical rains at times here so far this summer. Yesterday I was caught out in a pretty damn persistant downpour, and although I had an umbrella my ass ended up wet. First time I ever got a wet ass in the rain - from the water dripping off the umbrella.

Hey this is Manchester, England. It rains a lot.

In the last ten years I've lived in three cities on the West side of the UK - Glasgow, Bristol and Manchester - and the rain it has been the same in them all. It rains a lot.

But, I don't mind. I like autumnal weather.

I'm in north central Arkansas... average highs tend to be in the low 90's F this time of year. We've had about 21 days over 100F the last 4 weeks. Add average rainfall is about 14 inches below normal year to date. So it's just gotten pretty dry and crispy here... I guess the good news is a mild cold front is supposed to pass through today sometime and we'll have highs around 98 next week!! Woooo Hooo break out the jackets!!

Sounds like you are having the kind of summer we had here in East Texas last year. It reached 100 degrees in late May, and it didn't get out of the 100's until late September/early October, and it was bone dry...couldn't buy a drop of rain. It got up to around 110 for a few days one week last August. Then fires started breaking out all over the place in September, and for a few weeks every time you stepped outside there was a plume of smoke and a new fire somewhere, and a strong, persistent smoke smell from all of the fires that were going on. I hope you get some rain before any of that happens. Last summer was the most miserable one I've ever been through. I stayed camped out in front of the ac the whole week during the 110 degree days, and only went outside long enough to take care of my chickens and make sure they had plenty of water and were doing ok in the extreme heat. I was putting four trays of ice cubes in their water, had a box fan on them 24/7, and sprayed them down with water every day to keep them cool.

az has been in a drought for 15 years

We were in drought for ten years. Jackson lake used to be bone dry. I actually sold my boat because there was no water. The teton range was bare with the glaciers melted. Then we had a huge winter. Last winter was warmer but we still got a lot of precipitation. Water here is not a problem though. We have lots of ground water and then of course the snow load in the mountains. If we could tap the geothermal heat under Yellowstone energy would not be a problem we would be like Iceland.

The real trouble places could be west Texas and east New Mexico. They have almost pumped their aquifer there dry. Instead of working together and using some drip irrigation technology they just sprayed water, water it and fought over it and once it's gone, nobody is going to want to live there. When I lived in Israel they were pushing the envelope with drip irrigation technology. You could sit out there by Jericho and see the border with Jordon because the green would stop and go back to desert. It's pretty amazing what the Jews have done there with little water resources. The rest of the world could learn a lot from them.

105 with humidity. That's got to be killer. It's times like these I'm glad I live at 6,300 feet above sea level. We just don't get that hot. My neighbor plays the best of both worlds. He spends the summer here and the winter in Arizona.

We haven't had a brown out yet this season, but it is coming I am in the same sphere as most other midwesterners 105 humid can't keep the silly little flowers alive I planted this year, etc...

It is just unbelievable how many people think thier AC units will pull the house down to 72 degrees these things will only lower the temp by 20 all determined by the outside temp.

If it is 105 your ac unit should cool you to 85 you will be cold..but people keep thier units cranking non stop they freeze up break and then they bitch..dumbshits.

The unit must turn off to keep from freezing up, but they don't care or know better. Set your thermostat 5 degrees lower than your home temp you will be cold save money and have a 30 year life span AC unit.

They tax the city grid so much it causes the city to shut down sectors to save the whole city going out.

i should have clarified, 105 on the heat index. 93 degrees and high humidity. same as wind chill equivalent temps.

haven't had any brownouts at home but the slightest glitch at work puts the machine down. takes a half-hour or more to reset all the drives and PLC's and get running again.

i've been coming home and walking down the hill to the beach and sitting in the water for a few minutes. my yard is a lovely shade of brown...pops was here a few weeks ago and asked why i don't water it. i said not until i can pump that water (pointing at Lake Erie) up here for free. the new bushes i put in a month ago are the only thing getting watered.

Yeah I used to own commercial real estate and the tenants would freeze up the air-conditioning. A friend of mine installed two rows of solar panels on his home. He doesn't have the storage batteries yet due to the expense but he generating enough power to run the air conditioning during the day.

A friend of mine talked about that he wants me to instal a off switch so when his solar units kick on it doesn't back feed into the grid..not exactly my league of expertice, but they make the switches.

He wants off the grid completely someday( as much as he can) but to live in the city limits, not like those end of days people.

My friend has it set up with the power company what does go into the grid he gets paid for. I have a propane generator because we get power outages in the winter due to the snow load and storms. There is a big switch under our main breaker box I just throw to go off grid. You don't want to run your generator hooked up to the grid because you lose power and second you can charge the lines and electrocute the people working on them. I think being a linesman would be a scary job.

It's called micro mist. The problem is minerals can clog the nozzles and you can't have any furniture sensitive to moister around. You wouldn't want an expensive piano or guitars near any of the jets. I think they have bagged doing that for in homes but use them for patios and pool houses. Too bad solar panels are so expensive. Just generate your own power from the sun to run the air conditioning during the hot hours of the day. I guess the only drawback to solar panels is you have to keep them clean so you have to go up on the roof every few weeks to clean them.

Smart thinking there.

I had generator and would would plug it into my wall outlet back feed the house on one side of the main bar, but I had to remove the main 120 wire on that side of the panel and could run that sides light ac fridge etc....

I always wanted to live in a duplex get in the wall and splice into my neighbors electric and leach just a little, mainly to say I did it and also steal electric save and get more beer money!!!!! but I never did. I am somewhat ethical probably couldn't do that but I thought about it..lol

The stupidest shit I used to do was climb the electrical pole and split of my neighbors, Cable TV, remove the premium channel blockers, just dumbshit kid stuff..lol. This didn't cost the neighbor more but I was ripping off Cable TV.

I studied passive heating and cooling home construction never did any of it, but the books were interesting, tile floors, large windows, absorbes heat all day keeps house cool, gives that heat back off at night. If you know what you are doing and have the money in your homes construction, you can live for pennies..lol.

DI water filters aren't that expensive, but I will take your word for it.

My X's house has a biological home water filter that only lets the H2O molocule thru, so they say. I would change it 2x a years, Used only for drinking water and the ice maker.... smart stuff.

I never dug the softener all that salt and the mess, hooked up to the shower pipes and the clothes washer, it by passed the kitchen & bathroom sink faucet. I always figured there must be 10lbs of solid diamond quality salt in the bottom of the water heater..?

Doing money saving shit to your own house is just money well spent.

Nitro Express
07-22-2012, 09:19 PM
Actually a water softener helps you water heater last longer. The salt is so dilute that it's not going to corrode any pipes out. As far as drinking water goes you need the minerals in the water. Our subdivision has it's own well and we lucked out we have naturally soft water. I hated hauling salt in the last place we lived because we had hard water there.

clarathecarrot
07-22-2012, 09:32 PM
Yeap, the filtered water was in a three gallon storage tank after biological filtration, and then went to a small in line filter that added minerals back.

I never liked that little filter and would just go eat a T-Bone Steak.... mmmm minerals from cow parts ..easily absorbed and delicious.

I've lived in central Texas and Arkansas the last 33 years... never seen an AC unit freeze up unless it was improperly installed or missing insulation on the high pressure lines. Frankly when it's 100+ ain't nothin gonna freeze...

I think you are misinformed on the 20 degree differential... properly running A/C should have a 20 degree differential from the intake air to the output temperature. Unlike the A/C in your car your intake air which draws air externally unless you switch it to recirculate... home A/C intake air will be at whatever the ambient temperature is indoors then cooled 15-20 degrees plus have the humidity levels reduce by about 60%. So you can maintain a temperature for lower than the exteranl temp as long as the building has some sort of insulation.

Very sinilar to what i said what i said was understandable by people who don't care about the technical aspects. It just gets them where they need to be.

and...I have seen many airconditioners frozen solid and burn up due the the frozen solid nature of the frozen airconditioner unit.

I am however sorry that i didn't explain in detail the fact that I was speaking of the A-Coil. Not the outside
unit.of the house again most people have no idea what a a-coil is so I kept it simple.

I however must say I have seen widow units frozen solid and broken and the evaporator is outside the window.

I have also seen car ac pumps broken with a chunk of ice growing out of the pump head,
on the motor of a car that is temped at almost 200 degrees...

If it is 100 degrees outside you body will be cold if the as inside temp of your house is 80 if it is 80 outside you will be cold if inside is 60 if outside is 60 you will be cold at 40 inside.:jaw:

In this heat you may find if you walk around your house that there is a 1/2 to 1 inch separation between the dirt in your yard and the foundation of your house you should water this crack, everyday, a little to keep it closed down below what you can see.

Because, when we, or you, get that fook'n down pour that is coming soon enough al the water that normally runs away from your house will runs straight in that crack and flood your basement..NO SHIT!!!!

For slab foundations it's good idea to keep the exterior yard area fairly uniform in moisture along the foundation. Minimizes soil contraction/expansion which can cause the slab to crack.

One time I used a quickie saw, one of those industrial concret cutting saws, you see road crews using (hand held) on streets, 22 inch blade, gas powered, to cut a sqaure hole in a chicks basement to instal a sump pump because the basement kept flooding after a heavy rain.

Come to find out there was a cistern all hand bricked the brick work inside it was awesome work, like a roman aqueduct, made probably a 100 years ago, about 10 ft from this old house, the cistern was probably 9 ft across and 10 deep and the roof drains ran into it..for water storage before city water,it was cracked high up and would flood the basement when full.

Then I refinished all the harwood floors in the house and still didn't get any pussy.

them swamp coolers work great, but they are quite bulky and ugly

My grandfather made a burlap cooler he would take on camping trips. It just dripped water down some burlap curtains and inside were shelves for food. That thing worked great. I couldn't believe how evaporation kept things so cool. A swamp cooler is the same principle. Plus airconditioning dries the air which may be good if you live in Florida but in Arizona or southern Utah the humdity from a swamp cooler is nice.

you're right nitro, but we kill it with beer. i'm coastal, so it aint that bad. there's a place called 'whitecliffs' or something out west which regularly hits 45℃ + in summer; that's like 112f or so...

Nitro Express
07-27-2012, 01:03 AM
I've never been to Austrailia but my dad told me a funny story about the place. He likes to get up early and walk around and he was walking around Melbourne. He saw these tanker trucks pulling up and the guy unrolling big hoses and he thought it was heating oil. He couldn't figure out why in the hell they were topping the heating oil tanks up in the middle of summer. Then he saw they were beer trucks. Apparently some of the drinking establishments have big tanks and they fill them up with a big ass hose. I don't doubt you guys solve all your problems with beer if that's how it's delivered.

AMEN!!! But with some personalities here, one hopes they are internet-personalities, and those people aren't like that in real life. Cause if they are like that, I really feel sorry for their families.

I myself am holding back a bit on here, cause I don't know any of you, and I don't wanna hurt anyones feelings at least until I'm sure what I'm dealing with. Also in writing, a lot is lost as in body language, tone of voice, it's much easier to misunderstand each other.

To get back on topic...It was in the triple digits the last week of July, but has since "cooled" down to the upper 90's here. Even the triple digit temps we had a couple of weeks ago weren't near as bad as what we had last year during the same period, when we were in the 110's and you couldn't buy a drop of rain. We've been getting periodic rains this summer, and the temps are staying somewhat tolerable. There are rain chances in the forecast all of this week, and they're saying we could have a high in the upper 80's this coming Saturday. That's pretty good for the middle of August.

I honestly think that we might have had 1 day without rain this summer. Today it was 17 degrees C, which is about 62 F. And pouring rain of course. It also feels as if it's getting darker faster this year then normailly. We usually have light pretty much through night in the summer, but for example now, it's 21.10 o'clock, and it's already pretty much night.

A friend of mine who flys said he had to wait for the evening temperatures to drop to take off at Heber, Utah it was so hot there. Heber is in the mountains. When the air gets warm it takes quite a bit more runway to takeoff. The guy that bought my dad's airplane overloaded it with people and luggage and it stalled on takeoff and killed everyone. It makes you wonder how many people have crashed small aircraft because of this heat wave?

I take it one step further than most, my screen name is basically my real name and I use the same screen name on every forum I post on. It's even my user name on EBay. I try to post the same as I speak, though in person I may throw in a stray ain't or a ya'll. Finding out who I am and where I live would be pretty easy I suppose but I'm not hiding from anybody or pretending to be something I'm not and I don't have much respect for those who do.

I totally agree. I don´t like people who fake or pretend to be someone that they are not, hided behind their computers.

I'm sure they have made the new units more power efficient but home insulation and the color of your roof makes a big difference. You must have a pretty well insulated home.

My sister's stalker keeps finding her because she posts too much on the internet. The guy has been stalking her off and on since 1978. He got thrown in prison in California for trying to kill his parents and the state let him out. He got locked back up in another state and spent some time in the state's mental hospital but he's out again I guess.

I don't blame anyone for not posting too much about themselves.

About ten years ago. They flew down to Nevada to golf and gamble and made the mistake of trying to take off when it was hot. Hot air is a lot thinner and it takes more runway to take off. The plane had a lot of power and was turbocharged and that probably gave the pilot a false sense of confidence. The truth about small planes is if you have to be on a schedule, charter a commercial flight. A lot of people kill themselves in small planes because they have to get somewhere on a schedule. So they fly in bad weather and try to take off when the temperature is too hot.

My house is 11 years old and I guess it's fairly well insulated. Light colored roof too. The a/c company I use said the new outdoor unit I got would be more efficient but I didn't really think it would make a big difference - I was wrong. And it's not a large house anyway - but since it's just my daughter and me living here it's big enough :).

That is so tragic. And unnecessary. I knew a guy who died in a plane crash, but he was competing pilot. It was very, very sad. Especially since he had a new baby and new girlfriend, and he had just gotten out of porn business :-(

There's a joke that goes there are old pilots and there are bold pilots. But there are no old and bold pilots. A friend of mine was flying back home and he didn't top his tanks off because he was in a hurry and thought he had enough fuel. Well he hit a headwind and he had to run the engine harder and he ran out of fuel on final approach and went through a chain link fence. Totaled the plane but luckily both him and his wife survived it. It's pretty much in a lot of cases being in a hurry that caused airplane crashes. Not topping up the tanks, not doing proper checklists, needed to get somewhere now. You dump the checklist the day will come you will forget to put the landing gear down. It's amazing how easy it is to forget things like that when you have a bunch of other things to worry about.

To get back on topic....my power bill arrived yesterday. It was double what it was the month before because of having to run the AC so much.

Supposed to be another 31C day today. Fall can't get here fast enough, imo.

Last month we decided to quit trying to keep our garden alive by watering... the water bill doubled and we figured we could spend one quarter of that on vegetables at the store over what it was costing us to wage a losing battle trying to grow our own. Now classified as an exceptional drought...

Luckily the temps have dropped... but a nice front passed through this morning dumping over an inch of rain north and south of us. There was about a 50 mile break with no rainfall that just happened to cover our area. Talk about bad luck... darn it.

Are you trying to insult in spanish language now?
From where that expression comes from, I never heard it before, it comes from Mexico?
I am not overweight and you wrote it wrong. Did you learn that expression by listening?
I am asking because you forgot an accent, and you wrote "osico" and it is "hocico".
In spanish language "h" is silent. And "c" and "s" sounds the same, but not in Spain.

That´s why you made that grammar errors.
This song was made for you, Elvis, the sound is catchy and the lyrics are very fun and true. "El Consejo, cállese el hocico" (The Advice, shout your mouth)
Elvis, at least you should follow The Advice:
"No me lo tome a mal, no sea usted animal, es un consejo que le voy a dar: Cállese el hocico"
