how did 'greenland' end up being called 'greenland' anyway? i suppose 'iceland' was already taken. australia could've been 'mostly red and brownland'.

True story or partly true anyway. The first Vikings landed in Greenland and saw nothing but sheets of ice. The Danes wanted settlements there but relocating to a freezer was a hard sale. So this Viking leader (forgot his name but he was a redhead, not that it's relevant) got the bright idea to call it Greenland. Imagine the surprise.

The rumor is Lief Erikson wanted to settle that piece of land. The vikings were explorers because they were running out of fertile land to support their population. So to sell people on settling there he gave the place a nice name.

It actually snows on the big island of Hawaii sometimes. They have high enough elevation that it snows on top of the mountains.

Which will matter fuck all when it's too hot to step outside and nothing grows "inland".

The planet will survive. Whether humans do much longer or not is what's in question.

But we're not having any effect on the planet or the environment, NOoooo...keep telling yourselves that.

Erik the Red. BUT the name Greenland wasn't entirely misleading as some parts of Greenland, especially the parts the Norse settled, really are green, as these pictures from the tourist board show (www.greenland-guide.dk/outdoor_life_photo.htm).

As far as the climate in Greenland goes, it IS changing but it has happened before, plenty of times before the invention of the SUV.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenland

"Interpretation of ice core and clam shell data suggests that between 800 and 1300 AD the regions around the fjords of southern Greenland experienced a relatively mild climate several degrees Celsius higher than usual in the North Atlantic,[17] with trees and herbaceous plants growing and livestock being farmed. Barley was grown as a crop up to the 70th parallel. What is verifiable is that the ice cores indicate Greenland has experienced dramatic temperature shifts many times over the past 100,000 years."

"Between 1989 and 1993, U.S. and European climate researchers drilled into the summit of Greenland's ice sheet, obtaining a pair of 3 km (1.9 mi) long ice cores. Analysis of the layering and chemical composition of the cores has provided a revolutionary new record of climate change in the Northern Hemisphere going back about 100,000 years, and illustrated that the world's weather and temperature have often shifted rapidly from one seemingly stable state to another, with worldwide consequences."

Can I right now register and trademark the idea of Dirty Hippie Orbitz..... Do the dirty hippies have money to travel and can we segregate that demographic to get that extra Hotel deal that can't be found at White Supremesist Orbitz...?

Ummm, it has been reported over and over that this occurs about every 120 to 150 years. How is that unprecedented? It has happened before...many times.

To quote NASA:

“Ice cores from Summit show that melting events of this type occur about once every 150 years on average. With the last one happening in 1889, this event is right on time,” says Lora Koenig, a Goddard glaciologist and a member of the research team analyzing the satellite data. “But if we continue to observe melting events like this in upcoming years, it will be worrisome.”

If...If...If

Next editing out of context job, but, preceding that quote was:

He said that, because this Greenland-wide melting has happened before - in 1889 - scientists are not yet able to determine whether this is a natural but rare event, or if it has been sparked by man-made climate change.

The paper from 1990 that everyone is quoting on this states the following about this event.........

"The rare melt features in the GISP2, central Greenland deep ice core have decreased in frequency over the most recent 7000 years. Calibration of this change in melt frequency against modern spatial variation of melt frequency and temperature in central Greenland, and against modern temporal variability of temperatures in central Greenland, indicates that mean mid-summer temperatures have cooled over the most recent 7000 years, probably by slightly more than 1ĄC if variability of summer temperatures has not changed. Comparison to GRIP isotopic records from central Greenland and to the melt record from the Agassiz ice cap, Arctic Canada, suggests some seasonal and regional coherence for this cooling signal, as well as for a cold event about 8000-8500 years ago."

Its happening but ain't happening as often and the ice core shows it.

Nick, tough when the facts don't jive with your views. Sucks to be you.

BTW, before when I asked this "How is that unprecedented?" The answer should have been: Only because the leftist who want their global warming crap forwarded are making it some type of BIG NOISE out of a very ordinary event.

The simple fact is it has been happening for 7000 years at a rate of 120 to 150 years. Man, through his actions, doesn't cause this "melt" to occur.

Well, the fact that China and India each have over a billion in population is also a factor, obviously. But anyone who would ignore the increase in pollution since the beginning of treasonous outsourcing by US corporations has their head up their ass with their horns turned sideways.
