In February 2009, I happened to be channel-surfing the radio in my car and by total dumb luck, stumbled across a song that I recognized from an iPod touch commercial that was on TV a lot in the fall of 2008. I didn't think much of the snippet that was played in the commercial, but when I got to hear the full song, I thought to myself, "Hey, this isn't bad as far as pop music goes."

So I went home and thanks to Google and YouTube searching, I found out that that song was "Around The Bend" by a band with a really clunky name, The Asteroids Galaxy Tour. And then I listened to their other songs (at the time, they didn't even have an album out yet, so it was all live performances and a couple of promo videos) and I immediately fell in love. I checked to see if they were touring and as luck would have it, there were hitting New York City in March 2009. I took a chance on a new band, went up there, and my feelings were confirmed--they were quite impressive.

I have since seen them seven more times, and I can say without exaggeration they have vaulted up to my third-favorite currently touring band behind Van Halen and Soundgarden. Normally, I would scoff at the idea of a Scandanavian pop band but they're not ABBA, they're not some dogshit, lame-ass Euro trash for teenaged girls. They are really, really good at what they do, which is a mixture of Motown, funk, soul and some British Invasion. They're difficult to categorize but they are the real deal live complete with a horn section. I spoke to lead singer Mette Lindberg after one of the shows and commented that I'm mostly a hard rock fan, and almost cutting me off she said, "Yeah we get a lot of that, so-called metalheads listening to us." So there's definitely something there that's appealing to hard rock fans, unlike other similarly situated bands.

You be the judge. I don't expect this thread to go very far since it's not hard rock, but if I turn on just one person here I'll be pretty happy. I'd have to think that most of us are dying for some great new music and new bands (especially with what the record companies have been trying to force-feed us the last 15 years). I never thought I'd be into music like this but to my ears, it's irresistibly well-crafted art.

I'll give you a couple of what I think are their strongest tracks, and then you can do some more YouTube searching if this piques your interest.

Cool.

I kind of get that Amy Winehouse booked them early on as support although her voice isn't quite as special.

I'll look out for them.
