Red Bull Stratos: Freefall Jump From Edge of Space (Live Feed)
Felix Baumgartner attempts to break speed of sound
By Belinda McCallum

It seems Red Bull really does give you wings or at least nerves of steel with Felix Baumgartner poised to skydive from 23 miles (36.5 km) above the Earth at 8:30 a.m. ET (12:30 p.m. GMT) today, Oct. 9.

The 43-year-old Austrian will ascend in a stratospheric balloon to 120,000 feet to make his daredevil jump, and reach supersonic speeds of up to 690 miles (1,110 kilometers) per hour, before he parachutes down to the desert in New Mexico, after almost six minutes of freefall.

Felix’s mission has been masterminded by a group of experts in fields such as aerospace medicine, pressure suit development, and balloon fabrication.

Also on the team is retired U.S. Air Force Colonel and octogenarian Joseph Kittinger, current record holder for the highest altitude jump, who launched himself from 102,800 feet in 1960.

As well as breaking Kittinger’s record, Baumgartner will achieve records for the highest manned balloon flight, the longest time in free fall, and becoming the first person to break the speed of sound.

Baumgartner’s jump is expected to produce important scientific data, such as the effects of acceleration and breaking the sound barrier on the body.

Beneath his pressure suit, Baumgartner will wear a physiological monitoring system strapped to his chest, and breathe oxygen for two hours prior to the jump to remove nitrogen from his blood, that could expand at altitude.

This live video feed will have a 20-second delay to prevent broadcasting any tragic footage should Baumgartner’s mission not be successful.

I dunno, this sounds sort of nuts. Joe Kittinger (w.centennialofflight.gov/essay/Explorers_Record_Setters_and_Daredevils/Kittinger/EX31.htm) only made it up to around 614 mph, while the speed of sound is between 761-768 mph.

News just said it's a 50/50 chance of him going today.

Fucking crazy. If he breaks the speed of sound at least he won't hear himself crap his pants or scream in terror.

He's at or near the jump altitude, and will jump despite a problem with a heating unit on his face-shield. This is being televised on Discovery in America...

What would be cool is if a Vulcan survey space ship happened to be passing by this quadrant and noticed his vapor trail and... had never acknowleged earth for us seeming so primitive to them..came by to nuke us into non-existence for doing stupid shit like this over and over again just because we got some extra idiots standing around

Ok I changed the ending..but you get my drift....

Or... he vaporized into a hamburger like creature who splatted into the ground with such force he sent the earth into a universe ending spiral into the sun, setting off cataclismic chain reaction of galaxy explosions and God happened to be passing by in a space ship on a survey mission....saw this a saved FORd and Nick from eternal damnation....and Elvis was the navigator of Gods space ship///

Yeap it was all greenscreen.

J/K...But he seemed to pull his chute deployment just seconds before the 1960 record of, longest free fall time.....?

and that was in reality fucking one of the most awesome things I have ever seen.

We now have the tech to save shuttle astronauts...perhaps..?

Or we need to hook this technology up with the guy who lives in England and has the jet pack man crossing the english channel record...could you imaging using the jet pack wing to get to altitude and then releasing your chute.....I see a bunch of highschool age stoners and thier bogie boards getting into this as soon as the next Olympics.

We need to patent or copywrite register this idea of marrying the jet pak wing tech to this high altitude suit and parachute ..asap!!!

It's about two hours from now. Reminds of of Evil Knievel jumping over the Snake Canyon when I was a little kid...

We didn't live too far from Twin Falls, Idaho where Evel tried to make that jump. Our whole family went. My dad and granddad were from Butte, Montana which is Evel's hometown so he was a huge local hero. A ton of people there and a lot of hype. One big disappointment. I would have rather watched him jump a motorcycle over some buses. Thee is a huge bridge that goes over that canyon. It would be the perfect place to bungee jump.

I find it a bit boring. There is no real skill involved. You jump and then hope your equipment works. Big deal. Someone just had to come up with the money to buy the equipment and find someone crazy enough to jump. I would rather watch a Chinese acrobat show.

Jaded, are we?

Even so......someone has to push the envelope.

Let's see YOU try it!

I think that a) he is nuts, and b) he has balls the size of Jupiter.

Here is a cool 4-minute long recap, complete with moving soundtrack music....you can download or watch it in 1080p. I say kudos to Felix Baumgartner. He is the MOTHERFUCKING MAN!!!:
