Yeah, I'm a big softie. I only get riled up with politics. I dont know why...lol. But I'm sure you knew not to take anything personally ;)

I'm with ya on the smoking one, hun. Not me, but my fiance. Never asked him to, but he's giving it up. Trying to better himself and all that. He gets the cravings and what I wouldn't do to be able to help him out sometimes.

You know, all I can say is I used that 'Smoke Away' stuff, and it worked. Now that may have just been for me, and it may have been successful only because I had a much bigger reason I really wanted to quit for ( my daughter) but I can't knock the stuff. I smoked for over 20 years, and bam! In 7 days I quit.

Even after seven months though, I gotta tell ya, every now and then it's like DAMN I could go for a smoke! Just from the smell of others having one around me. However, in that time I've only cheated with 2 cigars ( no inhaling ) and one drag off a friends cigarette that tasted like shit and made me choke, so I'm good to go these days.

Best of luck to anyone trying to quit. It's hell at first, but so worth it after a short time.

One of the real perks is that, face it, as with any addiction you are hemorrhaging money on a daily basis, and cigs are no different. $5 a day is $5 a day. I'm putting that money away for my girls college fund!

a pack of smokes is about 7 to 10 bucks here. I dunno how much my hunnie pays for his.

Is the smoke away thing that pill? I know that there's some pill that's suppose ot make it really easier to quit. Hunnie is doing the patches and they leave a nasty taste in his mouth. I think I recall him saying it makes him feel sick. I told him to chew gum or get some lifesavers to see if they would work. If it gets any worse, I just might start looking into other things that might be better for him.

Yeah, it's actually a pill that helps clean your system of nicotine quicker. It's a natural herbal thing that you take actually about 4 horse pills about 3 times a day, and it cleans and detoxifies your system quickly. They also give you these little tiny dot pills to put under your tongue to help with the oral fixation cravings. Like I said, the most important factor is a desire to really quit. They have a support line and even a website with forums to help. Check it out.

One thing I do have to tell you is I tried everything from the patches to the gum to the fake inhalers and none of it works, and I'll tell you why: (this is not from me, it was explained to me by the SmokeAway documentation) When you use those products, you are still maintaining your nicotine addiction, you are just delivering it in a different way. As soon as you stop using one of those things, your craving for nicotine has not gone away. In fact sometimes it increases your desire to begin smoking again. Your body still has the nicotine inside which makes it crave more nicotine.

In other words, if you were trying to help an alcoholic quit drinking, would you think it would be advisable to just give him alcohol via a different method?

Makes sense to me, and like I said, it worked for me so I can't really argue against it. Hope that helps somebody.

Peace out.

There's a "Quit Smoking" clinic at my hospital. I used the whole gamut of treatment options: nicotine patches, Zyban and 3 nights/week of counseling. I'm not going to say it was easy, on the contrary, it's the hardest thing I've ever done. But well worth the effort. Good luck to you :)

Read earlier in this post. I made a recommendation that helped me. Patches and gum simply won't do anything but give you your addictive nicotine another way, and once you stop, you're smoking again...

SoCalChelle
06-28-2004, 11:27 PM
Gum doesn't work because you're administering it exactly the same way you do cigarettes - individual doses given over the whole day, causing your nicotine level to peak and valley. With the patch, you have a steady stream of nicotine all day - no peaks and valleys - and you gradually decrease the strength of the patches. That, combined with Zyban, worked wonders for me. Of course, you also have to READY to quit or absolutely nothing is going to work.

Been there done that. The patch is still giving you nicotine, still keeping you addicted. If that thoery of cutting back worked, why not just gradually smoke one less cigarette every day until you quit?

No, IMHO the reason I think the Smoke-Away stuff worked for me is because it cleanses your system of the nicotine quickly, repressing your urges more, and giving you the detoxification necessary to kill the physical addiction so you just have to deal with the mental part...
