I know it's for a good cause, but seriously?

http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/music-arts/paul-mccartney-subbing-kurt-cobain-nirvana-reunites-article-1.1218363

Nirvana's Dave Grohl asked McCartney to join him and Krist Novoselic on stage for the special 12-12-12 event, according to The Sun.

"I didn't really know who they were," the 70-year-old Beatles legend told The Sun. "They are saying how good it is to be back together. I said, 'Whoa? You guys haven't played together for all that time? And somebody whispered to me, 'That's Nirvana. You're Kurt.' I couldn't believe it."

Cobain and Novoselic formed Nirvana in the late 1980s, and Grohl joined in 1990 as drummer. The Seattle grunge band's brief but impressive run ended in 1994 with Cobain's suicide. Later that year, Grohl formed the hugely-popular Foo Fighters.

McCartney, Grohl and Novoselic have been rehearsing in secret to get ready for the benefit, according to The Sun. McCartney also performed with Grohl at the Grammys earlier this year.

The Rolling Stones, The Who, Alicia Keys, Eric Clapton, Kanye West, Roger Waters, Jon Bon Jovi and Billy Joel are also expected to perform during the star-studded event. Producers believe viewership of the program could reach 2 billion.

The Paul who sang "Helter Skelter" and "She's So Heavy" might have been able to pull that off, but I'm not so sure that 70 something Vegan Paul could do it.

Sounds like an odd idea, but then so did Grohl singing "London Calling" with The Boss at the Grammys or Hall of Fame (forget which it was) and they managed to pull that off.

Guess my first question would be Who the hell's playing guitar??

Yeah Paul can play guitar, but he's never sounded like Kurt. Grohl can play guitar, but if they're calling this "Nirvana" then his ass better be behind those drums.

Other than this odd BeatleVana thing, the other craziest note about this concert is the TV channels that are carrying it.

HBO is carrying it, which isn't that strange. They have carried live concerts on occasion... like Garth Brooks in Central Park, or the per-innaguration thing in 2009

VH1 is not carrying it on the normal channel, but apparently on their classic channel that only comes with ridiculously priced digital tiers of cable & dish programming.

AMC is showing it, which seems odd for an alleged "classic movie" channel - although they obviously broke out of that mold years ago with all their original programming.

the ION cable channel is also apparently showing it, which is good news for those of us who only have the most basic of basic cable. Now I can actually watch the damn thing.

And according to the TV listings, all channels will be carrying the entire broadcast from 7:30 to midnight or whatever. No word on whether there will be commercial interruptions (on all but HBO) but I'm guessing this will sadly be the case.

Anyone see that movie about the Beatles in Hamburg - Backbeat, from the 90s? Great film The soundtrack to the live performances was done by a band that contained members of Sonic Youth, REM, and ... Dave Grohl doing the drums - see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backbeat_(film) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backbeat_(film))

Pretty spot on, and capturing the fact that The Beatles sounded pretty raw back then, as this tune from the 'Beatles at the Star Club' bootleg shows:

This is all due to Dave Grohl being the biggest musical whore on the planet. If he can play with someone legendary, he will.

I think I saw some interview where he was saying he wanted to play with Led Zeppelin.

Oh well. Any musician would dig being able to jam with such legendary musicians.

Have you ever been to Aberdeen Washington? If not, you might never understand. You can't grow up somewhere like that and have a sunny outlook on life.

Kurt's problem was he got out of Aberdoom, but Aberdoom never completely got out of him. Not that I believe he actually killed himself, but the depression part was real enough :(

What does it say about the face of modern so-called music when you have to summon damn near all the surviving veterans of the 1960s British Invasion to make money for your telethon?

It says there are no real rock stars today!! And today's music sucks!! Alicia Keys is no Dionne Warwick! I know that sounds like an old fart but it's true. Kanye?? That's a big draw? Some idiot in a miniskirt??

It says the organizers knew which demographic would be the most likely to donate. And which acts were more likely to play for hospitality and travel/production costs...

:gulp:

Still can't get over how good The Who were. No matter how many times I see Roger pick up that cup it still gets to me.

Woulda been cool to see VH do a couple songs...

Yes, but it gave everyone a taste of Moonie, and that was not a bad thing.

Well, as far as benefit concerts go, I'd have to say this was one of the better ones. Kanye is the only performer who truly sucked ass, so that alone puts it ahead of the curve.

I didn't enjoy Alicia Keys's performance none too much, either. I could've done without all the repetitive Put your cellphones in the air, help me celebrate love, help me celebrate lifeX 50 bullshit. She may be nice to look at, but fuck was she annoying last night!

I only watched a little of McCartney's portion, and none with Nirvana.... And nothing else....

Sorry to say, some would say finally, but Sir Paul at 70 is just not sounding too good nowadays....

And, come on Paul, but "Let Me Roll It" ?? You've got 50 years of songs, you could've done better than that...

Thought Alicia Keyes was pretty good.

The Who were okay...interesting choice including Bell Boy in the set, although I'm on the fence about the inclusion of Keith Moon video from the 1974 Charlton show combined with audio from Quadrophenia...while I felt the band did it as a heartfelt tribute, it still came across as mildly tacky.

Weeeellll....I feel that way also, but I can't blame them, and was glad they did what they did. I mean, in the full concert they had film of John playing a solo, and the band played behind it (except for Pino Palladino).

It was a really nice way to pay tribute to their two fallen comrades.

But yeah, I can see mildly tacky.;)
