This country was set up so individuals could pursue their own happiness and have the freedom of expression and personal choice. God was inferred by Jefferson to be the grand creator that allowed people inalienable rights that were above any government. Sure. Gay marriage was not socially acceptable in colonial times. You would have to go back to the Roman empire and ancient Greece to find any remote accounts of it being practiced. The thing is if they aren't hurting anyone then what gives anyone the right to dictate to someone who they are going to marry? If you think about it, people have as much right to marry who they want as these religious institutions have the right to worship in the manner they choose. Let's just accept people have the freedom of choice and we aren't all going to agree but if you can take someone's rights away then well, it's only fair they can take yours away too. So we either accept the right to be different or we throw the freedom do to so on the trash heap.
