When a cell phone can also scan it's environment up to a distance of a mile, give me a 3-D map of the entire area (it can already do that, actually, just not by scanning, but by Google Maps) and then give me a realtime location of all life forms, energy sources, etc. with complete biometric information about all of it......THEN I will say it is a complete and functional tri-corder.

Seriously though......one app that will be the most useful app every created.....a true universal translator.

If you can speak into your cell phone, and have it spit out a perfect translation of what you said, in every dialect of every language on earth, it will drastically increase global understanding. The internet has already done this to some degree, but of course when you are out in person, traveling in another country where you do not know the language, such a tool could increase understanding and cooperation on a more human and personal level.

I've been working on a IMAC Lion 4 month old computer, for a couple weeks here at the house..never used one before Or any MAC system, had to break into it for a friend and research the content for a probate situation.

I have it rebooted new like new... and it can only be done over the net ( no more owning the system disks for MAC) and all the info loaded onto a 1TB Time Capsule and also placed the info on a 1TB FAT32 external I have before i formatted the computer..bla bla... ..but anyway....

This state of the art IMAC screen is sitting right next to my 2007 23 inch LCD powered by a HP and XP ( new updated HD and Video card is all). The image on the MAC screen is just a little cooler than my slightly warm HP and old school flatscreen. The difference is there but not great ( placed a same size photo duplicates on both monitors at the same time and was fudging around with colors and such)

I am wondering (with the exclusion of gaming) if computers have reached platuea of, that, the new devices and chips and such aren't really making much impact other than perhaps some downloading speed ..?

Some people are writing articles about Digital Cameras and are saying the compression of new age equipment it actually a step backwards as far as actual bit rate image quality, and this new hardware is degrading the end product.

The thing is that you have to write software that can take advantage of the hardware's capabilities.

And right now, the hardware is out there, but the software is not.

So you have Photoshop or Sony Vegas or ProTools, or CATIA.

Which of the above really takes advantage of the hardware's capabilities? Which one can use all 8 cores of a current cutting edge CPU?

I am sure the gaming software developers are going to be trying to develop scalable games that can take advantage of however many cores there are. But that is a new era....we have only been dealing with multi-core CPUs for what, 10 years max?

The software is lagging behind, while the next-gen hardware keeps rolling out like clockwork.

The next-generaton AMD Bulldozer and Piledriver CPUs are going to be released in 2014 using the fucking 28nm process at Fab 8 in Germany.....

And Intel is still moving along.....

Memory busses keep getting faster....what is it now? DDR3? With the next gen on the horizon?

And as the speed and efficiency of hardware increases, so also increases the rate at which technology advances.

I agree but what gets my goat is they can write software and upgrade firmware but choose to, semi force us to buy the new "device" instead of simply writing software to create a greater utilization of what already exists.

I understand business and driving the market ..so I understand thier profit ratio outline...new device = big bucks new sofware download /upgrade= not so great profit.

And will Microsoft make their OS Windows X work only with video cards that support DirectX 15?

Bad enough the hardware manufacturers play on our love of going faster and with more power.

If not in real life in cars and on motorcycles, etc., then as we sit here with our computers.

What is sad is the possibility that some diseases may be cured by new developments in science.....and it will create sadness amongst those who have lost someone special to one of those diseases.

Like, if they announced a cure for cancer tomorrow, and you just lost someone 6 months ago to cancer.

Oh well.

The technology is getting so much better. On the electro-mechanical side, there are much smaller servos, motors, and other kit necessary to build such things as arms, hands, etc.

What is going to create a revolution will be when you can control stuff by putting on some kind of helmet......
