Why don't you ask the Iraqis what was so brilliant about Desert Storm? They'll tell you about the tens of thousands of Iraqi soldiers that never came home.

He was competent, mediocre general IMHO. There was nothing particularly brilliant about his planning and execution after achieving absolute air supremacy, but I found him to be a bit gloaty about it all. I think Schwarzkopf was a decent well meaning man, like most generals. Even Westmorland was a good and decent man, even if he was terrible as a commander in Vietnam. But Schwarzkopf was a solid commander that executed pretty much textbook maneuvers, not much more...

But I can't see anyone hating him and blaming him for executing a war he didn't start and was ordered to conduct lawfully within political limitations. And while I'm no fan of the Gulf Wars, let's not forget that Saddam was a budding fucking scumbag that invaded a small country on his border simply because they pissed him off just as he invaded Iran because he had delusions of controlling the Middle East. Yes, it was mostly about oil, and our biggest failure no one mentions is that we simply reinstalled the Kuwaiti Emir who was a cunt wining and dining himself as many Kuwaitis resisted occupation with real heroism under the thread of often horrific death...

He also had things Rommel didn't have like adequate supplies, an enemy that hadn't cracked his code, complete air supremacy, and a large tech advantage over his enemies. You could argue Rommel had that in France or whatever, but Schwarzkopf wasn't any sort of particular genius, it was all very workmanlike--not that there is anything wrong with that.

BTW, I don't know about Schwartz, but most American generals and armor officers masturbate all over Rommel's picture with adoration--which is strange because if you actually go into Rommel he had his limitations and is overrated...

He used basic deception and maneuver warfare against a crippled enemy that had no means to divine what the Coalition was going to do and had poor communications. And I like Norman, but he also signed a fucked-up treaty that the Iraqis were able to take advantage of with loopholes regarding the use of their helicopter gunships (but not fixed wing aircraft, which they had few of left of consequence anyways). He was by no means Alexander the Great...

True enough. I've always maintained that it wasn't Montgomery (whom i think was an average commander) that defeated Rommel in Africa, it was the RAF and Royal Navy for limiting the supplies/equipment that Rommel received. Had things been more even, i think Rommel would have spanked Montgomery severely.

Regardless, it was still quite a feat to move all those troops and equipment through the desert without the Iraqis catching wind of it.
