First up, your standard-issue early 60s Italian sword and sandal rubbish:

THOR AND THE AMAZON WOMEN

(1963) starring Joe Robinson, Harry Baird and Susy Andersen.

Though the focus of this film is more on Susy Andersen and her struggles with Amazons, the beefcake quota is fairly high as Joe Robinson and his faithful companion played by Harry Baird walk around mostly half naked throughout the movie. With its focus on female characters, THOR was really conceived with a female audience in mind.

The film was apparently conceived as a Tarzan film before they were sued by the Edgar Rice Burroughs' foundation for copyright violations so they changed the settings. It's hard to believe this was supposed to be a Tarzan film because nothing looks like Africa or there are no jungle vines to swing from.

Harald and younger brother Guntar return to Norway after a 10-year voyage to find their father murdered and his lands now ruled by the villainous Sveno. As part of his plan to rally the Vikings against this tyrant, Harald disguises himself as the Danish ambassador and enters Sveno's stronghold. There, he falls in love with Hilde, Sveno's cousin, who's been betrothed against her will to the Danish king. Harald must devise a new plan when Guntar is captured by Sveno and when the real Danish ambassador arrives on the scene.

This is not a cheap film (though the dubbing is freaky....even in Italy, when the films were shot in Italian, they overdubbed all the dialogue), but is one of the most bizarre films I have ever seen in my life:

Federico Fellini's "Satyricon".

Lotsa poofery....stuff cadaverfuck and Elvis would love.

I had such hopes for Battlefield Earth.

Seriously. L. Ron Hubbard may have been a crackpot drug-abusing psychopathic wife-beater, but BEFORE he was all that, he WAS one of the great sci-fi writers of the Golden Age of science fiction in the 1930s.

Battlefield Earth is a VERY good (though lengthy - almost 1,000 pages in paperback) book.

And so I was glad that someone was going to make it into a movie.

God that movie sucks so much ass.

In fact, it sucks so much ass that it gives sucking ass a bad name......

I seem to remember us having discussions about this horrible film at some point aeons ago...
