Creator , innovator , originator , inspirational , influential , musical genius , Grandfather of Rock and Roll , the Father of Rock and Roll , the original Guitar God , ...just to mention a few .
Being a long-time St. Louisan there are way too many tales to tell about Sir Charles Berry , and , some of them are even true .
He still plays here once a month at a notorious little rock and roll burger joint called Blueberry Hill . Every show - sold out . Though he is notoriously cantankerous the man is a gem and a civic treasure .
When the live performance portions of his life story " Hail ! Hail ! Rock And Roll ! " were filmed at the Fabulous Fox Theatre in 1987 trust me when I tell you , it was a great big deal ! That was the hottest ticket in town that year . You know you are somebody when Keith Richards himself is the musical director of your lifes celebration .
Allman Brothers guitar great Dickie Betts once said " Every respectable guitarist had to go through the Chuck Berry portal when learning to play the guitar . "
I can't say enough about Chuck Berry - he simply kicks ass !

what an incredible showman.

The first true rock guitar idol. Good thread. Still listen to him from time to time.

Brilliant artist. Notoriously difficult to deal with. Just watch the classic scene from Hail Hail Rock n Roll where he gets into it with Keith Richards.

Best story I ever heard about Chuck was from 80s. A guy owned a bar called LuLu's. He books Chuck to play. The agreement with Chuck is that he does not travel with a band. The venue has to provide a band with guitar, bass, drums, and piano player who know Chuck's material. These guys have no clue what they are going to be playing the night of the show. Chuck just shows up about an hour before the show and talks to the band and tells them, "Follow me".

One of the riders he had in his contracts was that the venue had to provide a certain type of amplifier in his dressing room. It was some old thing that was near impossible to find. If the club couldn't provide it, you had to pay Chuck $1000 cash before he went on stage. So this club owner actually has this exact amp. He puts it in Chuck's dressing room. Chuck shows up just before showtime, sees the amp and is pissed! Says he's not performing and wants his money. Club owner makes some legal theats and eventually Chuck goes on.

Zing!

Legend has it Chuck's cut of the night's receipts - always paid in cash - goes directly into a briefcase which is never far away from him.

Chuck Berry stands out there on one of the uppermost pedestals of rock 'n' roll.

Back in the 60s he would despise the Stones, but sooner than later Keith was able to make friends with him -
he even personally greeted him when Chuck was inducted to the RnR Hall of Fame.

Here is a studio jam where Mr Berry and Keith play a kickass "Carol" - Keith is asked to play the signature lead guitar the way it should according to Chuck...

A must-see, a true gem:

I have never turned off, Chuck Berry.

I don't own any of his music, my appreciation for him is beyond that.

Great Thread.

Here is Mister Berry on an outdoor stage somewhere in France during a summer gig, extremely laid down and in a very good mood... he's even wearing a French "béret".

He even tells the audience "je joue la musique que j'aime" in the end.

It's amazing how pissed Keith gets, and how he keeps his self control not to get out of there... Damn, he's asked to start again a couple of times, and even during the tune Chuck always keeps an eye on him... Looks like one of the worst nightmares Keith could have had, but it's real.
