It's funny how many ideas about 42 were thrown around and also shows what bullshit numerology is

eg.

The one I liked is it is the number of minutes it would take you to fall through the Earth and back out at any point using gravity - the so called gravity train.

Fortunately Adams was a very very early adopter re: the internet and actually answered the question on it many years ago.



The answer to this is very simple. It was a joke. It had to be a number, an
ordinary, smallish number, and I chose that one. Binary representations,
base thirteen, Tibetan monks are all complete nonsense. I sat at my desk,
stared into the garden and thought '42 will do' I typed it out. End of story.
