When he was playing Tony Soprano, the character was supposedly in his thirties. I always thought he looked much older. How much I hate Gandolfini is likely just about how good an actor he is - making it impossible to separate the man from Tony Soprano.

Nobody deserves to die at 51. That's five years younger than me for crissakes. So I hope the actor rests in peace, and Tony Soprano burns in hell.

Aww, Jeez...he was terrific in Get Shorty. The way in which he played off Travolta was outstanding. In fact, all of the actors in that film were great, aside from Rene Russo, whose oddly elongated face made me pretty sure she used to be Mister Ed in a former life.

The follow up - 'Be Cool' - was shit. But 'Get Shorty' is one of those films that just picks you up when you're down......

Except he died in Italy, so he was probably eating REAL food at the time. It's probably more likely that he got a blood clot on the long plane ride to Europe, and it eventually made it up to his heart.

Quite possible, Dr. FORD....

Deep vein thrombosis which leads to a pulmonary embolism, very prevalent in long plane rides....

Sad news . I honestly can't remember ever seeing him in anything else before " The Sopranos " He owned that role to the hilt . What a talented guy . Since Sopranos I have watched him in several recent flicks like " Zero Dark Thirty " and " Not Fade Away "
I know Tony Soprano was a just a ficticious larger than life character but , I can't help but notice the irony in his passing away in Rome .

RIP James Gandolfini - Thanx for the cool flix .

It's the long transcontinental ones that are more dangerous...

Flight time from New York to Rome is 9 hours.....

Actually, as long as you get up and stand/walk around every now and then it would probably help things a bunch....

Although if you were "Tony Soprano" that's the LAST thing he'd want to do....

Not to mention that when you DO get up, you become the guy that just stares at everyone, which annoys the fuck out of me.....

I think it's maybe a bit premature to start blaming his death on a pulmonary embolism caused by a flight without any evidence especially given that he wouldn't have been in economy.

Chances are as a pretty fat guy who smoked cigars he just got unlucky on the percentages that most get away with until a bit older but even that is speculation.

So a guy sitting in first class can't get a clot ?? ;)

I hear ya, it's just speculation.....

But I am getting a chuckle out of the people saying he was "chubby"..... Clinically obese is more like it.....

This came up at the office today and a (not skinny) co-worker got SUPER defensive - "Your weight doesn't have anything to do with that!" Really? Being obese doesn't up your chances of heart attack and/or stroke? Medical professionals beg to differ...

'Chubby' by American standards. :)

My reckoning was that transatlantic West to East is usually overnight so in First Class he would basically be sleeping in a fairly decent bed. :)

Who knows, I haven't even seen a report that said how long he was in Italy.

Gary Moore died at 58 just by getting drunk on holiday.

I've known many friends and family over the years who have got drunk on a holiday in their late 50s or 60s or 70s and completely got away with it. All of them every New Years Eve for a start. :)

Bad luck/genes are probably the main factor.

People, especially the media hate bad luck as an answer to anything so you get the speculation. The first thing most people want to do when they hear about any tragic death be it premature or a kid dying or whatever is to find a reason that doesn't apply to them. It seems to be human nature.

"Ahh they smoked? Good I don't smoke so it couldn't happen to me" kind of thing.

James Gandolfini left most of his $70 million estate to his two children

Maria Elena Fernandez

Six months before he died, actor James Gandolfini signed a will leaving most of his $70 million fortune to his two children.

Documents filed Tuesday in Manhattan Surrogate’s Court, and obtained by the New York Post, show the “Sopranos” star remembered other members of his family and some close friends, but the majority of his assets and personal belongings were left to his 13-year-son, Michael, and 8-month-old daughter, Liliana Ruth.

Michael, who was vacationing with his father in Italy on June 19 when the actor died of a heart attack, will receive the bulk of the estate through a trust set aside for him until he turns 21. He will also receive his father's clothing and jewelry and first option to purchase his father's condominium (and parking space) in New York City's Greenwich Village neighborhood.

The will states that "other provisions" have been made for Gandolfini's wife, Deborah Lin, who will also split the remainder of the estate with their young daughter and the actor's two sisters.

Michael Gandolfini also will split his father’s house and land in Italy with his sister. When they both turn 25, the property will be transferred to them. "It is my hope and desire that they will continue to own said property and keep it in our family for as long as possible," the documents state.

The 51-year-old actor also left $200,000 to his assistant, $50,000 to a friend, $500,000 each to his two nieces, $100,000 to his godson, and $250,000 to two friends.

About 1,500 fans, family members and friends, including Gandolfini's "Sopranos" co-stars, attended the actor's funeral last week in New York.
