I'd sooner listen to Phil Collins than anything ELP or Asia has ever put out (I can tolerate some of what Pink Floyd did...even a few Yes tunes here and there, but ELP was just the epitome of wanky prog rock at its most bloated).

In terms of mass-appeal, more people were affected by Collins and his climactic fill at the tail end of In The Air Tonight than all the paradiddles Carl Palmer has played in his entire career.

Exactly. They grabbed vintage rock 'n' roll and delivered their own genuine stuff, renewing a whole genre with disarming ease and drive. definitely one of the very best things that happened to rock 'n' roll - alongside Dr Feelgood, but more successfully.
