The one difference I notice between conservatives and liberals is conservatives rarely watching liberal shows. Most conservatives just seem to voice their frustration about the current state of affairs. Liberals seem to watch all the conservative shows and know more about who is saying what than the average conservative does. There seems to be the obsession of the right wing media. Rush Limbaugh used to say a lot of liberals listened to his show. I think Rush was right on that.

I think a minority on each side do. The intelligent people on each side vote their pocket book. If you make your living in a union, in education, or as a bureaucrat chances are you are a liberal. If you make your living owning your own business, in agriculture or work for a weapons contractor chances are you are a Republican.
Then you have people who vote whatever party because their parents did and then you have the fanatics who have made their party of choice pretty much a religious belief.

They lick their finger, stick it up in the air, take a reading of the status quo and base their strategies for their own selfish gain off of this knowledge. These are the playas. They tend to rise to the top of any institution. They are the best students in school. They rise to the top of organizations. Most make good livings off the system while doing very little to change it for the better. They actually laugh at those who fight the system viewing them as naive or as idiots. As long as these people get what they want, the system is fine because they succeeded in playing it.
This is the reality of life.
An intelligent Democrat or Republican really don't believe in any ideology. They are gaming a political system for their own selfish purposes. They are the same but play on a different court.

This is probably true for the US 2 party system. But, I´m German. Here we actually have more of a choice. What´s more, I´m an active party member so I do influence policies. I even was the deputy mayor in my part of town for over 4 years and on the local council for 9 years. And I´m liberal in as far as I believe everybody should be allowed to do whatever he wants as long as he doesn´t harm others by doing it!

Of course you gotta draw the line somewhere. If 90 % of those who smoke crack turn into lunatic criminals you could argue that smoking crack doesn´t only harm the smoker but will almost certainly lead to harm to others.
Other than that, regulate and tax the shit out of drugs but make them legal. Regulate so, like with booze and tobacco, kids don´t get hold of it. Tax, so you have a fund to pick up the health care bills.

I´m for legalizing everything!
I´ve spent a small car´s worth of money on cocaine and haven´t said no to speed and meth either. I have a good job and my last check up said I´m healthy as a horse. I have no debt whatsoever and as long as my employer doesn´t go broke my yearly supply of stock options should leave me fairly wealthy way before retirement.
It´s all a question of who has access to what! Look at the USA´s obesity epidemic. Some people shouldn´t even be allowed near a Burger King!
In terms of legalizing hard drugs, I would go with the "Phillip Seymour Hoffman" defense. Phil was an experienced drug user. By all rights, he should have known the difference between how much smack he needed to get high, and how much would kill him. Apparently, the stuff that killed him was much purer than the crap he usually shot into his arms, so he thought he was taking the "proper" dose, but instead, caught himself the express ticket to Hell, where he's now comparing notes with Sid Vicious, who pretty much went out the same way.
Take heroin out of the hands of street criminals who cut it with baby laxative or any other white powdery substance available, and then a dose of smack will be a dose of smack and nobody will accidentally OD just because they find a slightly more reputable dealer.
Not that I'm advocating heroin use. Never tried it, never wanted to, seen lives destroyed by it. Not remotely interested. But I'd rather take the criminals out of the equation and treat addiction as a health problem.

I've never done heroin either but I've done morphine. I was in the hospital on morphine for two weeks one time. I felt like one of the walking dead for about a month afterwards. My friend in Washington got into heroin for awhile. After two stints in prison he got clean but he was hooked on the crap they gave him to get off heroin. Suboxone. I'm pretty sure he got back to smack right before I split town. I found out his old lady never quit around the same time.
