Detroit has been going down the tubes for years, through (not that there's seemingly much difference between the two) both republican and democratic local, state and federal administrations.

Nobody wanted to make the tough choices thirty years ago when the auto industry started gradually pulling out of the area. Everybody kicked the can down the road, thinking the road would never end.

Well, now it's the end of the road. What can be done? You can't raise tax revenues on a shrinking population of low-income citizens and expect to meet fiscal responsibilities. Taxes are what pay for services.

It's sad to say, but while what's happening in Detroit should be a wake-up call, it probably won't be. Other cities and towns have struggled (and are struggling) with an inability to fund previous and current pension obligations, as well as the shrinking quality of government services due to a lack of money.

It's gonna take some tough choices that get right down to the fundamental way people live in terms of resource allocations. Don't look to any elected officials to stick their necks out in terms of dishing out the hard medicine required.

You can't go on Belle Isle in the middle of a week day without feeling like you might get robbed and or murdered. You do NOT go on Belle Isle on a Friday or Saturday night.

Belle Isle, like most of the rest of the city, has been turned to shit.

What is killing Detroit has a lot more to do with national Republican policies than any local or even state politics.

As in NAFTA and other shitty "free" trade deals, and 32 years of corporate deregulation.

Not that Snyder and his little puppet dictators are helping either, of course.

Detroit has not had a Republican Mayor since 1967?

Detroit has had black (not being racist, just stating the facts) Democratic Mayors since then. Probably the only one that wasn't corrupt, was Dennis Archer. They ran him off because he was trying to make the necessary changes, and trying to do things the right way. I really wish he hadn't given up.

Then Detroit elects Kwame. They bust him for corruption, and then promptly re-elect him. Because he was getting over on "the man". If they let him out of prison today, and he ran for Mayor tomorrow, those dumbfucks in that shithole would give him the job in a landslide victory. That is a fact.

Next and present, is former NBA player Dave Bing. His resume' and experience to win the job not only includes his NBA history, but running an automotive supply company that was handed to him on a silver platter, with preferential treatment from the Big 3 because it was a minority owned business. He ran it bankrupt and out of business. I had the unfortunate experience of doing business with them, and it cost the company I worked for a lot of money, because they refused to pay for their purchases. Almost $100k they flat out told us they were not going to pay. This after months of chasing them for the money. We go to pick up the equipment, and it is TRASHED. Irreparable trashed. Here's an idea, let's elect him Mayor because he's black, and a former NBA player. Again, that is NOT racism, that is fact. Those are his only two redeeming qualities.

Dennis Archer was the only good Mayor, with the actual good of the city in his agenda, that Detroit has had since 1967. It is a shame they let him walk away. Detroit would not be in the situation it is in now, if Dennis Archer would have been allowed to right the ship. He just couldn't overcome all the self serving agendas.

Obviously there are serious problems that require solutions, but turning it into a Randtard fantasyland dictatorship isn't it.

You would still get robbed. The robbers would just have more expensive clothes.

As in NAFTA and other shitty "free" trade deals, and 32 years of corporate deregulation.

Not that Snyder and his little puppet dictators are helping either, of course.

What's hurting Detroit, is the people that are left there don't want to help themselves. They want handouts.

Do you know why there has been a mass exodus from that city, by black and white alike? Because it isn't safe. There are only a handful of safe places to live in that city. And none of them are in houses. They are in condo's. You should see what used to be the wealthiest parts of the city. The beautiful houses and architecture in places like Indian Village. Grand River Avenue. Highland Park and Palmer Park. Fucking MANSIONS that are decaying hulking messes. Not one. Not two. Hundreds of them. Thousands. You drive through there and you imagine what it must have been like to live there. You dream about buying one of those houses, and fixing it up. They are that attractive, if they are still livable. But, you can't. Not because you can't afford it. Because you can't live there safely. Nor would you dare send your kids to school there. Detroit wasn't handed the moniker of "Murder Capital" for nothing. That title was earned. It is unsafe.

Detroit is in the situation it is in, because of corruption. Because of entitlement. Detroit has to take responsibility for itself. That corrupt Government down there needs to quit blaming everyone else, and be held accountable. There are plenty of black Politicians that have the ability to do what is necessary to turn the city around. It won't happen overnight. But they can do it. Orr is not popular among the citizens, because he is an outsider. Hopefully he won't fall prey to the corruption. I think he is making tough decisions that unfortunately have to be made. He just might make things better for them in the long run, if they'll allow it.

I blame Barry Gordy. What the fuck was he thinking, moving Motown records to LA??

Seriously though, it was a fairly large industry at the time, and it employed a lot of local talent in the day.

Though obviously not a drop in the bucket compared to the auto industry and all related jobs. Which were gutted by corporate greed and fucked up trade policies.

Probably wouldn't get executed though. No matter what color you are.

Nor would you have gangs there. You wouldn't have the open drug dealing. The prostitution. The extremely loud partying, with all the garbage just left behind because they have no respect for themselves, or their environment.

What's the lesser of two evils? What's the solution?

Ah, I see you drank the "right to work for nothing" koolaid that they serve down there in the old Confederacy....

The undeniable fact is that the decline of this country overall and the decline of living wage union employment began at the exact same time.

If Charles Koch and his brother get what they want (literally no minimum wage, let alone no unions) then there will be nothing separating this country from the third world.

(Except some of those countries actually have health care. But that's entirely another thread)

Some of them certainly have been. Believe me, as the former owner of a Dodge Aries AND a Ford Tempo, I'll be the first one to say that Detroit automakers are capable of making shitty cars.

But on the other hand, how many Toyota products had to be recalled in the last few years. Now were those Japanese Toyotas, or were they made in the union bashing "right to work for nothing" states of the Southern US? Or both?

Yes, the Dodge Aries and Ford Tempo represented some lean and embarrassing times in the Detroit auto industry. But those days are gone. Todays cars from the Big 3 are as good as anybody's.

Hey, no matter where those Toyota's were built, they were probably engineered in Jap land. It takes a lot more people to design and engineer a car, than it does to assemble it on a line.

More of the same will save Detroit. Spoken like a well trained socialist.

The undeniable fact is that the decline of this country overall and the decline of living wage union employment began at the exact same time - I'll play along.

The minimum wage, when it was first enacted in 1938, was twenty-five cents per hour. It's only fair that the minimum wage keep up with inflation, right? Instead of $7.25 per hour, it must be somewhere near $25 per hour by now. In the interest of fairness, I went on the web to an inflation calculator. You know what the minimum wage should be now when you account for inflation? Hold onto your union card. $4.82.

This is the asshole who turned Gateway Computers from decent quality (though horribly overpriced) machines into cheap disposable pieces of crap with "time bomb" power supplies that fried the entire motherboard when they went tits up.

That speaks volumes about what kind of a piece of shit he is.

Yeah dude, he ran Gateway in the ground. See, it's not just the black politicians here, that undeservedly get elected.

How Detroit Land Bank billing scheme netted $824K from state of Michigan

One month before the Detroit Land Bank Authority released an audit detailing an improper billing scheme involving some demolition contractors, Timothy Drakeford signed an affidavit saying he was directed by Aradondo Haskins, a former Detroit Building Authority employee, to adjust his demolition prices.

The Free Press obtained the affidavit and related e-mails Tuesday through a Freedom of Information Act request. The records shed new light on aspects of the city’s demolition program, which is under federal investigation, and its apparent bidding practices.

More than $250 million from the federal Hardest Hit Fund has been allocated to Detroit for its demolition program. The money has helped the city tear down more than 10,000 blighted properties since Duggan took office in 2014.
