Pope calls unbridled capitalism 'a new tyranny'
'We ... have to say thou shalt not to an economy of exclusion and inequality. Such an economy kills'

In the first major written work of his papacy, Pope Francis attacked unfettered capitalism as "a new tyranny," urging global leaders to fight poverty and growing inequality.

The 84-page document, known as an apostolic exhortation, amounted to an official platform for his papacy, building on views he has aired in sermons and remarks since he became the first non-European pontiff in 1,300 years in March.

In it, Francis went further than previous comments criticizing the global economic system, attacking the "idolatry of money" and beseeching politicians to guarantee all citizens "dignified work, education and healthcare".

He also called on rich people to share their wealth.

"Just as the commandment 'Thou shalt not kill' sets a clear limit in order to safeguard the value of human life, today we also have to say 'thou shalt not' to an economy of exclusion and inequality. Such an economy kills," Francis wrote in the document issued on Tuesday.

"How can it be that it is not a news item when an elderly homeless person dies of exposure, but it is news when the stock market loses 2 points?"

The pope said renewal of the Church could not be put off and said the Vatican and its entrenched hierarchy "also need to hear the call to pastoral conversion".

"I prefer a Church which is bruised, hurting and dirty because it has been out on the streets, rather than a Church which is unhealthy from being confined and from clinging to its own security," he wrote.

In it, economic inequality features as one of the issues Francis is most concerned about, and the 76-year-old pontiff calls for an overhaul of the financial system and warns that unequal distribution of wealth inevitably leads to violence.

"As long as the problems of the poor are not radically resolved by rejecting the absolute autonomy of markets and financial speculation and by attacking the structural causes of inequality, no solution will be found for the world's problems or, for that matter, to any problems," he wrote.

Denying this was simple populism, he called for action "beyond a simple welfare mentality" and added: "I beg the Lord to grant us more politicians who are genuinely disturbed by the state of society, the people, the lives of the poor."

Since his election, Francis has set an example for austerity in the Church, living in a Vatican guest house rather than the ornate Apostolic Palace, travelling in a Ford Focus, and last month suspending a bishop who spent millions of euros on his luxurious residence.

He chose to be called "Francis" after the medieval Italian saint of the same name famed for choosing a life of poverty.

Stressing cooperation among religions, Francis quoted the late Pope John Paul II's idea that the papacy might be reshaped to promote closer ties with other Christian churches and noted lessons Rome could learn from the Orthodox such as "synodality" or decentralized leadership.

He praised cooperation with Jews and Muslims and urged Islamic countries to guarantee their Christian minorities the same religious freedom as Muslims enjoy in the West.

Total hypocrisy. The roman catholic church has literally billions invested in stocks and don't even get me started on their real estate holdings. Of course, ZERO taxes are paid on all of the above.

Why should I trust or care what a bunch of pedafiles have to say on anything? Nice to hear from a jesuit who leads an organization that has it's own bank and who's equity holdings alone would probably make it one of the largest corporations in the world.

If money is so evil, then stop asking for donations and stop owning things.

Now for the misguided members of the catholic faith who don't molest children and actually do some good in the world, this isn't meant for you, just the assholes who are playing you like fools.

Ah, I think this Pope is moving the ball in the right direction. There's a lot of road to go, but look what he's done with the Germans, and look at how he's proceeding in his life as well. It's a big organization, and turning the wheel now means it will still take a long time to turn the ship, but he is doing a good job of leading by example.

It is funny to read the people in here pontificate about the ills of the Church, and go on about spending the Church’s money. Much in the same way you guys pontificate about taxing and spending “the 1%” money, or pontificating about the ills of Corporations and wanting to spend their money.

How about this chat room bitchy people:

Go out and earn enough money so you can change with world with it. That way you can spend your money instead of trying to spend or putting your .02 in on how other people, corporations, and/or churches should spend their money.

You’ll all say but I can’t the system is rigged. However, it wasn’t rigged for Mark Zuckerberg. It wasn’t rigged for Bill Gates. It wasn’t rigged for Jeff Bezos. It wasn’t rigged for Robert Pera. It wasn’t rigged for Jack Dorsey. The list goes on and on.

Get off your sorry asses, work harder, work longer, work smarter and stop whining. You might make something out of your lives.

"It wasn't rigged for Bill Gates".

Well, actually it was.....

Bill Gates didn't actually create anything. He swindled somebody else out of the original DOS system, built the Windows interface on that, heavily based on code "borrowed" from the original Macintosh. And then he made a Hell of a deal with IBM, and eventually got a shitload of government and corporate contracts.

So yeah, I'd pretty much call that rigged. As the Devil, I'm actually very proud of him for pulling off this level of manipulation, but let's call it what it is.

This is what I LOVE about you Rethuglicon/Libertardian/Tea-Baggin' Nazi cocksuckers. You seriously believe that American is forever stuck in the prosperity of the 1950's where racism, misogyny, and most of all, the opportunity to get ahead in life never went away! Golly! And you're always to first ones to call others out for not working hard when the reality is most of you never worked a day in your life that wasn't given to you via a silver spoon shoved down your bigoted mouths. So yeah, work longer for less pay, work smarter than benefits the corporation not the individual and for fuck's sake stop whining when they take your pension away. Yes, make something out of your life by being in perpetual debt!

Right. I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth. That’s the second funniest thing anyone has ever brought up about me in the Roth Army.

Silver spoon? hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahaha

I’m a minority. The klan burned a freakin’ cross in my grandfather’s yard. My family was poor when I was born. My father worked hard his entire life to provide for our family. I was brought up to work hard, believe in the Lord, and my father instilled a drive in me to outwork those around me. If that meant spending longer hours at something I did it. I didn’t whine about it and cry all the way home to mommy.

I didn’t expect something for nothing. That’s the new American way. That isn’t how this country became great. However, it is the path that will lead us to its demise.

Take a look in the mirror. What do you see? Do you like what you see? If not, change it. It really isn’t that hard. If it is hard then maybe you’ll find it was worth it.

BTW, did you notice I didn’t call you some label? That might be because I didn’t take some leap in logic and throw stereotypical labels at you. Thanks for proving the point of my earlier post.

Lastly, I don't have much debt. Zero credit card debt. Zero vehicle debt. Our family debt ratio would surprise most people. We pay for things in that funny green stuff that nobody uses much anymore.

I'm pleased that the Pope has said this - the obvious issue of the Church's wealth aside, I feel that far more religious institutions could make themselves a pain in the ass of aggressive forms of capitalism.

Money - or having lots of money - is no inherent evil. But when your having lots of money impacts upon the lives of others, it needs to be addressed. CEOs of major companies earning 60-70 times more than their lowest paid staff - many of whom can't live sufficiently on those wages - is wrong; corporations putting shareholders before their employees (using casual labour and endless short-term or zero-hour contracts to maximise profits) is wrong. But there are many, many responsible companies out there - you just don't hear about them.

But there is a far wider problem than this - why do we equate happiness with our capacity to purchase stuff? Sure you need money to provide yourself with a decent house, food and security for the future, but once you have those things why do we chase more money? We all know it won't bring fulfillment, but we seem incapable of moving beyond it - Christmas, and the rampant consumerism which surrounds it, highlights this more than ever.

I would say it's along the lines of what 2 Timothy 3:2 says, that men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient, unthankful, and unholy...

And as John 12:37 says, some refuse to believe, so things become their god...

The church's will have credibility as soon as they refuse to take money. It's the pot calling the kettle black. Good grief. Ok pope. Have a Vatican garage sale. Also the jesuits need to sell off all their equities they own. Oh and let's give everything in the Vatican bank to charity.

There was a guy by the name of Barrack Obama who showed up. Nobody knew much about him. But the media made him out to be a superstar. He got the Nobel Peace prize without doing anything to actually earn it. He was a creation of the media. People embraced this image thinking it was going to be something new and better. Now only the most delusional believe the illusion.

This pope is no different. He heads an organization that has done horrible things under the facade of religion and charity. He's a product of the media. He hasn't been pope long enough to prove anything of his worth.
