U.S. spy agency gathers data on cellphone locations globally: report

WASHINGTON Wed Dec 4, 2013 6:28pm EST

(Reuters) (http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/12/04/us-usa-security-nsa-idUSBRE9B31AM20131204) - The National Security Agency gathers nearly 5 billion records a day on the location of mobile telephones worldwide, including those of some Americans, the Washington Post reported on Wednesday, citing sources including documents obtained by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden.

The records feed a database that stores information about the locations of "at least hundreds of millions of devices," the newspaper said, according to the top-secret documents and interviews with intelligence officials.

The report said the NSA does not target Americans' location data intentionally, but acquires a substantial amount of information on the whereabouts of domestic cellular telephones "incidentally."

One manager told the newspaper the NSA obtained "vast volumes" of location data by tapping into the cables that connect mobile networks globally and that serve U.S. cellphones as well as foreign ones.

U.S. intelligence officials contacted by Reuters declined to comment on the Post report.

The article cited officials as saying the programs that collect and analyze location data are lawful and meant solely to develop intelligence on foreign targets.

U.S. intelligence agencies' extensive collection of telephone and Internet data has been subject to scrutiny since Snowden began leaking information in June showing that surveillance was far more extensive than most Americans had realized.

Facing a public outcry and concern that programs are targeting average Americans as well as international terrorism suspects, Republican and Democratic members of Congress are writing legislation to clamp down on the data collection and increase public access to information about it.

Advocates responded to the Post report by calling on Congress to take up legislation to reform NSA data-gathering programs.

"How many revelations of NSA surveillance will it take for Congress to act? Today's news is the latest startling blow to the right to privacy," Zeke Johnson, director of Amnesty International USA's Security and Human Rights, said in a statement.

White House OKd spying on allies, U.S. intelligence officials say
NSA and other U.S. intelligence agency staff members are said to be angry at President Obama for denying knowledge of the spying

WASHINGTON -- The White House and State Department signed off on surveillance targeting phone conversations of friendly foreign leaders, current and former U.S. intelligence officials said Monday, pushing back against assertions that President Obama and his aides were unaware of the high-level eavesdropping.

Professional staff members at the National Security Agency and other U.S. intelligence agencies are angry, these officials say, believing the president has cast them adrift as he tries to distance himself from the disclosures by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden that have strained ties with close allies.

Kristy,
You know why women still need husbands?

Because a cucumber can't mow the grass.

Story: A man in his mid forties bought a new BMW and was out on the interstate for a nice evening drive.

The top was down, the breeze was blowing through what was left of his hair and he decided to see what the engine had. As the needle jumped up to 80 mph, he suddenly saw flashing red and blue lights behind him.

“There’s no way they can catch a BMW,” he thought to himself and opened her up further. The needle hit 90, then 100, and finally reality hit him and he knew he shouldn’t run from the police, so he slowed down and pulled over.

The cop came up to him, took his license without a word and examined it and the car. “It’s been a long day, this is the end of my shift and it’s Friday the 13th. I don’t feel like more paperwork, so if you can give me an excuse for your driving that I haven’t heard before, you can go.”

The guy thinks for a second and says, “Last week my wife ran off with a cop. I was afraid you were trying to give her back.”

“Have a nice weekend,” said the officer and he walked away.

US denies Obama aware of Merkel spying

The US has denied that Barack Obama was aware of his government's spying on Chancellor Angela Merkel. The statement came after an earlier German media report saying the president was informed of the operation in 2010.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/06/08/us-obama-merkel-idUSBRE85718N20120608

Last time Barack Obama wanted Angela Merkel's help getting elected, she rebuffed a seemingly modest request from the junior senator from Illinois to hold a presidential campaign rally at Berlin's iconic Brandenburg Gate.

Wow. Imagine a communist (neo Leninist) denied a speech at the Brandenburg gate.

He didn't, they tapped her before telling him because they could. I think the speculation is that he was interested in her intentions regarding the Greek and Italian debt crisis. We've always spied on allies and they've always spied on us. I think the cell phone thing was a bit over-the-line, though...

Actually Germany is a bit pissed at us because they wanted to take some of their gold deposits out of the Federal Reserve Bank. The FED said it's going to take seven years. They then took their case to the Obama Administration hoping they would pressure The Fed to honor it's agreement. Nothing was done. Then when they found out they were being spied on big time they flew a military helicopter over the US consulate shaking it so badly the china fell out of the cupboards.

Also Standard and Poors was going to downgrade the Federal Reserve Bank's bond rating due to not honoring contracts and failing to pay on bonds. Standard and Poors got leaned on by Eric Holder's Justice Department. So maybe there are a few reasons Obama is not winning a popularity contest right now. He's the Federal Reserve's thug gangsta boy. They love him. He runs up lot's of debt that they finance with money made from nothing but we have to pay them back. If they can keep the military and police muscle, in time they will want land and slaves for debt payment. Barry is their man. He's doing exactly what he is supposed to do. Protect the banks and run up more debt while giving them even more power over the citizens.

Of course we're "spying" on allies.

It's completely childish to pretend that Obama came along and said
'Can we start spying on the Germans please'

The NSA have always been spying on your allies, they would be remiss not to spy on foreign leaders.

What you really need to worry about is that they now spy on everyone externally and internally and have been lying about it.

You also need to worry about the fact that Obama or any other president has no control over that machine any more and that the minute you get a real bad guy rather than an ineffective one then you are completely fucked.

This is what I continually come back to....

I'll repeat what I said a couple of months ago, in all seriousness, just what do you think that huge agency has been up to since 1952?

Those of us who worked in fields in the military that had knowledge of the NSA, while we didn't know exactly what was going on with them most of the time, we knew that the NSA was a completely different animal compared to the CIA or military intel agencies.....

I agree with Sesh: This isn't a Obama thing, it isn't even a Dubya thing... This thing goes back to Truman and Eisenhower officially... Unofficially it goes back to World War I.....

The incident began January 2, 2013 after David Eckert finished shopping at the Wal-Mart in Deming. According to a federal lawsuit, Eckert didn't make a complete stop at a stop sign coming out of the parking lot and was immediately stopped by law enforcement.
Eckert's attorney, Shannon Kennedy, said in an interview with KOB that after law enforcement asked him to step out of the vehicle, he appeared to be clenching his buttocks. Law enforcement thought that was probable cause to suspect that Eckert was hiding narcotics in his anal cavity. While officers detained Eckert, they secured a search warrant from a judge that allowed for an anal cavity search.

Initially the doctor on duty refused the search, citing it as "unethical." Unfortunately, after several hours, hospital personnel relented and did the search.
Here's what happened to David Eckert at that hospital:

While there, Eckert was subjected to repeated and humiliating forced medical procedures. A review of Eckert's medical records, which he released to KOB, and details in the lawsuit show the following happened:
1. Eckert's abdominal area was x-rayed; no narcotics were found.

2. Doctors then performed an exam of Eckert's anus with their fingers; no narcotics were found.

3. Doctors performed a second exam of Eckert's anus with their fingers; no narcotics were found.

4. Doctors penetrated Eckert's anus to insert an enema. Eckert was forced to defecate in front of doctors and police officers. Eckert watched as doctors searched his stool. No narcotics were found.

5. Doctors penetrated Eckert's anus to insert an enema a second time. Eckert was forced to defecate in front of doctors and police officers. Eckert watched as doctors searched his stool. No narcotics were found.

6. Doctors penetrated Eckert's anus to insert an enema a third time. Eckert was forced to defecate in front of doctors and police officers. Eckert watched as doctors searched his stool. No narcotics were found.

7. Doctors then x-rayed Eckert again; no narcotics were found.

8. Doctors prepared Eckert for surgery, sedated him, and then performed a colonoscopy where a scope with a camera was inserted into Eckert's anus, rectum, colon, and large intestines. No narcotics were found.

Throughout this ordeal, Eckert protested and never gave doctors at the Gila Regional Medical Center consent to perform any of these medical procedures.

Think that's outrageous? David Eckert has since been billed by the hospital for all the procedures and they are threatening to take him to collections.
Must-watch news report on the case from KOB 4 in New Mexico:

The difference is the scale of it now, there used to be a few thousand of them, now there are a few hundred thousand of them.

They are gathering all the data and then looking at it rather than looking for data on particular people.

For example they will have far far more information on any of the posters at this site than they ever had on Malcolm X...

Major companies like Google and Yahoo post open letter to gov't:

Global Government Surveillance Reform

The undersigned companies believe that it is time for the world’s governments to address the practices and laws regulating government surveillance of individuals and access to their information.

While the undersigned companies understand that governments need to take action to protect their citizens’ safety and security, we strongly believe that current laws and practices need to be reformed.

Consistent with established global norms of free expression and privacy and with the goals of ensuring that government law enforcement and intelligence efforts are rule-bound, narrowly tailored, transparent, and subject to oversight, we hereby call on governments to endorse the following principles and enact reforms that would put these principles into action.
