I sometimes wonder why people settled here in this climate instead of countless nice sunny places.

I really don't understand your situation. Half of Canada was settled by Scots, 'Hey I know of an even colder place, lets move there...'

LMAO, damn you Scots! Tons of Scottish links in this city/province. McKenzie King, Tommy Douglas. And of course, our first Prime Minister was a Macdonald. Most Canadians feel a sense of kinship with Scots because of it.

Nice!! I don´t like this so hot weather either. Most people here are from European origin and we kept the same eating habits for Christmas and New Year, ( italian Panettone, german Christollen and spanish Turrón (nougat)).

Years ago I spent some months in Eastern Europe in Winter, it was -30 °C, and the Christmas and New Year was so nice with snow and ice. You really need to eat food with more calories and I had a great time in the cold weather.

Yes, it´s a little chilly here.

We are having 2 weeks of heat wave with mayor energy blackouts everywhere. Buildings and streets without power and water since the last 10 days...the goverment doesn´t move a finger and people are protesting at the streets setting fires....as the weather temperature is not hot enough, and the Summer just begins. I really miss wintertime.

Try smoking wax. It's expensive but it gets you higher than a kite. It's pure THC with "other components" . It's like marijauna crack. You stand up after you take a hit and you better have someone ready to catch you if you blackout.

It does if you shoot it directly into your viens. Either that or it kills you. I just meant the feeling was coming back after it wore off. I feel alright now but I took a few shots of tequila last night so I could sleep. The tooth I had pulled was really wanting to stay in my mouth. It felt like the root was into my brain while the dentist was trying to pull it. He was a great dentist though. I barely felt anything when he stuck me with that gigantic needle over and over again. And he only charged me a hundred bucks. I'm going back to get my remaining teeth cleaned after new year. Usually I only go to the dentist when I absolutely have to. A dentist broke my jaw in the service and I've avoided them ever since.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/us-cold-drives-escaped-convict-robert-vick-back-to-his-cell-9045204.html

The freezing temperatures in the United States have caused an escaped inmate to turn himself back in.

42-year-old Robert Vick of Hartford escaped the minimum security Blackburn Correctional Complex in Lexington, Kentucky, on Sunday.

After the temperatures dropped to low single digits the following day, Vick felt the need to surrender himself. According to Lexington police spokesperson Sherelle Roberts, he walked into a motel and told the clerk he wanted to turn himself in in order to escape the arctic climate.

Roberts stated: "It's cold out there, too cold to run around. I can understand why the suspect would turn himself in."

Lisa Lamb, spokesperson for the Department of Corrections, clarified that Vick would have been wearing prison-issued khaki pants, a shirt and a jacket. Wind chills were down as low as -29 degrees Celsius in Lexington on Monday.

Vick was treated for hypothermia on Monday evening before being returned to prison.

He was serving a six-year sentence for burglary and criminal possession of a forged instrument at the time of his escape.

"Winner" didn´t recieve any popcycles :(

"The last remaining polar bear at Buenos Aires zoo has died in a heat wave".

Zoo officials say 'Winner' became nervous and irritated amid the scorching heat and the noise from fireworks during Christmas Eve celebrations.

This affected his ability to control his body temperature and he apparently died of hyperthermia.

The zoo in the Argentine capital is widely visited and has traditionally showcased polar bears.

Officials say the animals used to live in a 2.5metre diameter pool but their cage was improved in 1993 when a 145,000-litre pool was built along with a site for birthing and three security rings.

The zoo said in a statement that the site had been visited by experts and met all international regulations to house polar bears.

Latest news are that more A/C, fresh water and a semi shadowed screen have been installed in Arturo’s enclosure. This issue has had a great media impact. Some government authorities have resigned and since last Tuesday the Zoo has a new director, a veterinarian :)

We both already signed a petition. Many citizens, professionals, animal welfare activists, are organizing protests at the Mendoza Zoo and at the local province government building. This weekend there will be a TV debate, on the local Mendoza network, between government authorities and Arturo’s supporters that will demand for Canadian specialists, to come down here, to assess Arturo´s health condition, for a possible safe trip to Canada.

The best for Arturo is to travel to Canada and spend his last years there. We appreciate the Canadian effort in helping with this situation, for Arturo’s sake.

Pink fairy armadillos??? We call them Pichiciego, they live in the warm sandy plains…..their number is declining and are impossible to find.

Pichiciego is not a funny word here, for some people who were born in or before 1963.

Los Pichiciegos is the first book about Malvinas-Falklands War ever written, by Argentinian writer Rodolfo Fogwill, he wrote it in six days in June 1982 during the war.
It´s a novel, a brilliant description of life underground during the conflict. Almost all the ground troops deployed to Malvinas were from sub-tropical areas of Argentina, 18 years old boys with only a couple of months of training, they knew very well to avoid snakes and sunstroke, and The Junta sent them without any appropriate Winter equipment….
Rodolfo Fogwill was put in jail in the 70 by the military dictatorship, when he came out, he wrote his first story Muchacha Punk ( Punk Girl), which won a prize, and began to write regulary. He had to wait until the fall of the military dictatorship to published Los Pichiciegos ( there were clandestine prints).

Los Pichiciegos was published in Britain as Malvinas Requiem.

It's been so sunny this winter in So Cal I never lost mine. I only wear a shirt if I'm going somewhere I have to wear one to. I haven't put on long pants since I got booted out of school. When I was a truck driver I'd never wear long pants. I'd throw a pair of sweat pants on if I absolutely had to but that's about it. I used to ride my Harley in shorts and tennis shoes until a buddy laid his bike down in shorts and I saw how fucked up his legs got from laying on hot asphault before the ambulance came. They were afraid to move him but his injuries were mostly cosmetic. They didn't know that at the time though.

It's so funny to read how you and your connected at the asshole Siamese twin react.

There's no such thing as vampires or ghosts either.

But since you simps believe in all kinds of ridiculous shit like global warming I just have to ask; are you dumb asses using your affluent thermostats at all this winter or warming up your affluent suvs? Keep polluting or freeze and die; either way I'm getting ridiculous returns on oil futures right now. Light crude was going for less than $50 in 08 before Barry Oilcan jumped it double.

You guys are more than just 99%; you're double that and then some on ignorance.

Here's a tip for you leftist idiots: stay away from ICE ECX Emissions. You won't understand it and you certainly won't profit.

Another tip: check your actual "liquid" worth.

You need to stop worrying yourself about my sex life. All I can tell you about it; is my band played main street in Daytona for the 500 race. The women were very friendly and mostly loose moraled. We didn't miss you pale faces from the great white north. In fact, we were glad you weren't there.

Al Gore invented global warming. You sucked Al Gore's cock by voting for him.

That makes you and everyone else that did the same thing; GWC's (global warming cocksuckers).

The Global warming issue is man made; the data supporting is man made; the crisis is man made; the "consensus" is man made.

I have hardly done any snowmobiling because of a lack of snow. It's all fallen to the east of us. I notice Delta airlines flights have really been down and it's due to the severe weather in the east. Frankly the Sierras would love to have some of that snow that is making the rest of the country miserable.

Canadian Rockies are saying the same thing. I wouldn't mind snow...it would mean it was warmer! -30 c right now. It actually feels warm.

One of the coldest weekends of the winter, and the power goes out Saturday night at 11:30. Mine didn't come back on until around 8 last night. House started out at 70, ended up at 48 when I woke up at 7 pm. Went to my brother's to get ready for work, came back home and the temp was already up to 57.

A high tension line let go and fell on some lower lines, shorting out transformers at a few substations. I had one day off this week and spent it shivering in the dark...what a waste of a day.

One nice thing about our house is the previous owner put in a propane generator. If the power goes out, I just throw a big switch and start it up. We have wood stoves so we can heat with wood if we have to. One nice thing to have on hand is a kerosene heater. I used to keep five gallons of K-1, a kerosene heater, and some kerosene lamps for emergencies. Even the kerosene lamps put out an amazing amount of heat. A few of them lit in a small room can keep it pretty warm.

It's funny...power went out for a few hours on a Saturday morning in December and I was trying to figure out a way to run my boiler for the hot water heat. Found a 15 amp transfer switch that should work with a generator or even an inverter but I never got it. Sure could have used it yesterday. No lights is one thing, no heat sucks.

I bought a cheap Harbor Freight generator a few years ago. I'm a ham radio operator and we do a field day every year where we put up emergency radio stations and we need generators to run our equipment. I've used that generator quite a bit and it's never given me a problem. Not that big of an investment but nice to have when the power goes out.

Canadian Rockies are saying the same thing. I wouldn't mind snow...it would mean it was warmer! -30 c right now. It actually feels warm.

-20 F at night is pretty much the norm here for December and January. We can get colder. The thing is the homes here are well insulated and it's no big deal. It's when the cold hits areas where people's homes aren't designed for extreme cold where the trouble is. If you don't have much insulation in a home, it's amazing how hard they are to keep warm. Even with a pretty good heat source. If all you have is electric heat, you are going to have a heart attack when you get the bill next month.

I added insulation to the attic and it seems to have helped a lot. My goal was to have a $100 a month gas bill, and I was at $120 for December. Probably would help if I didn't leave it set at 70. :D Hopefully I can start dialing it back this month.

I live in an old house in an old neighbourhood. Plastic in the windows and gaps, etc all taped up and covered. My gas bill would be atrocious if I didn't.

We've had record setting temps the last 4 months. -20 would feel like beach weather! We had a windchill warning of -40 and more since Thursday. Finally over! We won't be above freezing for a long time yet though.

It was warmer up North (Iqaluit) almost every day this winter.

Yeah it's amazing how much heat you lose through a little gap. I had a friend who's fireplace wouldn't burn very good and I went over and cracked the outside door and it worked fine. His house was so tight the fire couldn't get enough air to burn. My dad used to build fireplaces and we always built a vent from the bottom of the firebox to the outside. Wood stoves have the same problem. You need a flow of air to make them work correctly. I like to leave my home a tad leaky on purpose because you need some fresh air coming in.

Sealed up my garage with insulation up top, foam in the gaps, mudded and taped and primed the walls and ceiling, caulked the cracks, put trim on, the works. Now on the coldest day (well maybe not -50) but pretty damn cold, my garage stays at LEAST 32 degrees or warmer. With a little space heater running I can typically get the temp around 45. Nice enough to drink beer, listen to some VH boots, and work in the shop.

Could be. In 2012 Colorado had a severe drought but...in 2013 we had severe flooding. I've lived in this state all my life and have never seen clouds as menacing and dark as I did in late summer 2013. What was really fucked up is the way they moved. These clouds did not follow normal weather patterns (even in the monsoon season) of coming up from the south/southwest; they drifted due north and quickly shifted east dumping massive amounts of rain. Fucking weird I'll you.

I've never seen people more paranoid. Some think global climate change is going to wreck havoc. Some think large radio transmitters in a system called HARP are being used to heat up the atmosphere and change the weather. The one common thread is people think human beings are responsible (either directly or indirectly) and we actually can fix things. Hell most countries can't even make their government function decent. We can't run countries but we think we can fix the world. :lmao:

The same thing happened to my home town. Sun Valley was off to the side and brought in the big spenders but Ketchum still had a middle class element. You could be a ski bum and still afford to live there. Not anymore. Since I live in a tourist town I hear you on the tourists but they bring the money in. If you have to make a living in such places the tourists are the gravy. You move to the hamlet away from them once you have made a nest egg off of them.

That happens. I skied Park City, Utah and Sun Valley Idaho when rocks and dirt were poking through the ski runs back in the 1980's. Some years there is lot's of snow and some years there isn't. One of the best ski seasons I remember was when mount Pinitubo went off in the Philippines. It affected the weather to where we got some great snow because of it.

We got hammered on Thursday, about a foot at work and a little less right here on the lake. Plow guy didn't show up to the plant until after 7 pm, we had cars stuck in the parking lot and two semis and our yard truck stuck in the back lot.

I was on nights Thursday, left ten minutes early and was seven minutes later than usual. One of the local elementary schools had kids stuck in traffic on a bus until almost 6 pm.

Supposed to be another round starting this evening, lasting through tomorrow night.

No snow around here yet, but damn it's been cold. Seems like we went from 70 degree days in October (a bit warmer then usual) to daytime "highs" in the low 40s and overnight temps of around 18 or so. I actually prefer the cold & dry to the usual cold & damp (and resulting moldy) but damn, how about a gradual drop in temperatures, for fucks sake??

It is just fucking light rain, people.

Like this morning. Light drizzle. Turned to extemely light snow and was over by 8. Got sunny. Then cloudy. Then sunny. Then it got dark. And the entire fucking time it was fucking cold outside. And windy too.

But you kids don't know nothing. We used to get blizzards with 2 feet of snow every year in Kansas. And it ALWAYS gets down to 5-10 below zero every year. And it always gets over 100 back there in summer.

Thing is, if the Earth fell into the sun, we would have a high of, oh....about 10,000 or so.

We will get that cold but I'm up at 6300 feet. Usually in the coldest part of the winter we average -20 F. Our house is so well insulated you don't know it's that cold outside and our cars are garaged. Still cool having your hair freeze solid when you are out in the hot tub. It's all about having a place built for that kind of cold. A leaky drafty house with poor insulation would make it miserable.

No, the problem with Seattle is there are too many goddamned hills, so the entire city pretty much shuts down when there's any measurable amount of snow and ice. That, and all the transplanted Californians who don't know how to drive in the shit.

Olympia usually fares a little better. There's only a couple of streets that usually get closed up under more extreme weather, and neither is a major traffic corridor.
