Getting hardware this week.Still some shaping to do.
Gonna put EMG Zakk Wylde pick ups in it.Lock tuners and a shaller bridge with fine tuners.
Is Aria pro2 bass and Parker fly influence in it.My first axe ever.

You did a nice job on the head stock. It's unique and looks good. Looks like you get to have some fun with a router and templates. All I can say is it's easer to measure a few times and make sure it's right than to put wood back. Good luck on the rest of it!

Hi Elvis,

I used a router on the back.
I didn't get my pick ups yet.Slight delay UPS.Getting it next week.
I use mold / template with the router.
This project might go to hell but just wanted to try.
My cousin is giving me tips..he made 28 strats.
Hope to post pics next week.Very scared to use router a lil.

Routers are fun. Start slow, don't try to go too deep on the first pass.

You pretty much have to be on the mark with those body routings and bridge pin holes. If you are off even a little bit the strings won't align with the neck, the innotation will be off and the pickups won't be in alignment with the strings. Also moving a pickup forward or backwards has a huge effect on the tone. So your pickup cavities are dependent on what kind of bridge you are installing and the speaking length of the string. There's a lot to consider. The advantage of routing a body yourself is you can fine tweak your pickup placement opposed to being stuck with what's on a pre-routed body. The devil is in the details.

ELVIS

I figured you cut the back hole prior to gluing and clamping the top on...

I would strongly encourage that you practice routing the exact cut you will do for a pickup on some similar scrap wood...

It reduces the fear factor and builds confidence...

The real tricky part is bridges. The saddles are in different locations depending on the bridge. So you have to have an average measurement or when you go to adjust the innotation you will be too far forward or backward to adjust it properly. I would adjust the saddles in the middle and then measure the scale length to them. Then you carefully mark the holes that you need to drill to install the bridge. I would put the bridge in and make sure that's all good before routing the pickup holes. It will give you a measuring point on where to put those. Remember the closer you put a pickup to the bridge the more treble and bite you will get in the tone.

The cat is putting it's magical mojo into the guitar parts. I once read where a Japanese sword maker meditated for 30 days under a waterfall before forging a sword. Hmmm. Got a waterfall nearby? You can get into the right frame of spirit and mind before grabbing that router. LOL!

Template was the schecter guitar.(the one elvis recommended and I bought)I took a pencil and traced the contour. After that I rasped and sandpapered my own shape and flow.
I hope it turns out great.I wanna drill myself..but gotta get 2nd opinion..is 22 fret to bridge 7 inches standard? Or does it vary? LOL
Some guy at a shop will help me or my cousin but hope to get most done myself.

A fixed bridge with fine tuners. Good choice if you are a newbie. One thing you need to make sure of is that your glue is compatible with the wood you are using (I used to work in a cabinet shop many moons ago). In fact, US glue manufactures have had to reformulate their glue because it doesn't bond some of the aisian woods being used in furniture these days.

So yeah always do research on what glues, stains, and finishes you are going to use. That way you can avoid some nasty surprises. Sometimes the best glue to use is just regular carpenters glue and other times something else is needed. You have the internet. It makes doing these kind of projects a lot easier than when information wasn't so easy to get. I think that's why we fucked things up so much in the old days. LOL! Sometimes the fuckups became new discoveries.

The whole formula is based on the speaking length of the string (length of the strings from the bridge saddles to the nut). It determines exactly where the frets go on the neck and of course you need to make sure the bridge saddles are in the right position.

You can't guess on this. It has to all be right on the money or you will end up with a great looking unplayable guitar that will never be in tune.

I'm going off of memory here. I went to a bass seminar taught by Jack Casady who was the bass player for Jefferson Airplane and one of the pioneers for fuzzed out big amplified bass sound. He has quite a bit of experience in building bass guitars and the electronics bit of it. We were talking about building bass guitars and I remember him telling me the half point is the 12th fret. So the bridge needs to be the same distance from the 12th fret as the nut is.

You might measure a guitar you have and see if this is right. If it is then you have a measuring point and a distance to go off of. It should be the same for any guitar regardless of the scale.

The location of the bridge is absolutely critical. If the distance from the nut, down the centerline of the fingerboard, to the center of the bridge saddle slot is not within about 1/32" of where it should be the guitar will not play in tune, and it will take some extreme measures to rework it so it does.

In other words. You are 1/32 " away from "Oh Fuck!"

Thanks..I was thinking of mounting the neck to a piece of wood..then tweak the aettings of the bridge on that piece of wood.
Measure the distance and when thats done put it on the real body..(is that cool?)

Here are the specs of the bridge..it says no template needed etc..

Yeah, but a bolt on neck gives you some wiggle room...

I put my neck next to a strat..the strat has the same neck..22th fret neck to bridge was around 18,5cm. (12th to bridge 32cm).
I mounted the neck to piece of wood with bridge..same distance..
I get nice flageolet on 12th,5 en 7th position.
Am I good to go drill holes now..do the rest later with the saddles and neck screws?

Sounds like the scale of your guitar is 25.5". Insulated copper wire will work. I like to use either shielded wire or shield the whole control cavity and cover. If you don't have shielding you can pick up interference and get hums and even pick up radio signals through your guitar. I had one guitar I wired half assed and didn't shield and when I hit a certain chord and let it sustain, I would pick up a country western station and it would come through the speaker of the amp. LOL!

Hi...I went to hell and back hahahahahah I measured from the 11th fret to bridge instead on 12th hahaha..i was stoned.(took me 14 hours to fix the problem..i almost gave up).
But i filled the holes..drilled again..scratched up my bridge but the guitar sounds great without electronics..doesn't go out of tune.
I drilled for electronics..i might have to fill the damage and paint the guitar a solid colour.

He said Eddie came over to his house and played on his Jem but it sounded like Eddies tone.Same thing with Brian May's guitar.Steve played on it but it didn't have the Brian tone..but when Brian played it it did.
It's gonna be on NTR Radio Holland. 1st of june and 9th of june.I'll post the link.
His biggest influence music wise was with Frank Zappa,Joe Satriani , his highschool musci teacher and David Lee Roth.
Bottom line was forget the bullshit, fame, fear etc and just play music and find your own note. Was all meditation stuff..really nice masterclass.

Bottom line was forget the bullshit, fame, fear etc and just play music and find your own note. Was all meditation stuff..really nice masterclass.

It's amazing how much of the tone is in the fingers. The thing I learned is you really have to tap the strings hard to sound like Ed. He really whacks em. I can see why he uses a .009 gauge string set. It works best with his style of playing.

I notice when I play Led Zeppelin songs I sound too refined. I actually have to slop up my playing to get the Jimmy Page vibe. I have to slow it down a bit and loosen it up or it just does not sound like Zeppelin. You can have the right chords and notes. You can be playing in proper time. The thing is, if you don't touch the strings the right way it just will sound like a different song.

He talked about Jimmy Page too.
He also said that you gotta find your own string size..what fits you best.
Before the Jem he had a strat but the whammy bar only could be pressed down.So he got a screwdriver and scraped out the wood at the whammy bridge so he could pull the whammy up!! Like the floating system..he could do bombdives etc.

I always heard if you used bigger strings you got a bigger sound. On an acoustic that might be true but on an electric guitar it really isn't. You can sound huge with a light set of strings. I always stuck with .009's I've played that gauge for the past 34 years. Works for me.

Steve used to write articles for Guitar Player magazine in the early 80's. I remember that Strat of his. He was a bit of an experimenter in his own right. Yeah I read lots of Steve Vai written articles then and I even learned The Attitude song out of the magazine. The good old days. They had little vinyl records you could tear out of the magazine and play on a turntable LOL!

I just remember good guitars and amps being real expensive in those days. Heck a Les Paul Standard was $1,000 if not more back then. A Marshall 100 watt head was $800 to $1000. Fender Strats were around $600 if I remember right. Equipment now is cheaper on average and you have more choices. I had a silver faced Fender Champ amp I used for years and went from a Memphis Les Paul copy to an Ibanez Roadstar II to a Kramer Baretta. Kept using the Champ amp but boosted the front end. Then I finally got a Marshall half stack. Didn't need it but I had it. The day I got it was almost better than sex. Oh and Boss effects. LOL! Everyone had a few of those.

I learned about every song on Led Zeppelin I and II. I think songs like Whole Lotta Love and Heartbreaker are good songs to start out on. Not very complicated and really, you have to learn vibe and feel. Even if Jimmy played a bit sloppy he had the vibe down. I think everyone goes through the Jimmy Page portal if they play rock guitar.

If I'm looking for a guitar player I make them play Link Wray's Rumble. If they don't know it "Get the fuck out!". If they don't know who Link Wray is it's double "Get the fuck out!" You can see if they have vibe. It's full on rock and roll period.

Ha! This is what I'm talking about! It the vibe man. Jimmy knows it!

I can remember when there was the big Kahler vs Schaller show down. It was the 1980's and in the US we had a big paranoia the Japanese were going to take over. Kahler was a family owned business in Aneheim, California and they would run these big ads in guitar magazines on why their product was superior, better engineered, easier to install and MADE IN U.S.A.

Then when you talked to people they hated the way the Kahlers sounded. The MADE IN GERMANY Schaller Floyd Rose might have been a pain in the ass to install but people liked the feel and sound better than the Kahler. They never really seemed to catch on even when the mom and pop company marketed the living shit out of their product. I assume they are well made but gee, I had to have a Kramer with a Floyd because Eddie used one. LOL!

LOL..i meant to say..How do you carve the hole where the 42 block of floyd rose part is.
I can dive down but up not to much.
So I'm guessing I have to just copy the schecter floyd rose hole that was routed in the Original body.
Anyway..I did it..by hand..today gonna install electro.
Getting rubber hobby sheets to inlay the floyd rose so all looks slick.
I guess this bitch will be finished in a couple of days.

In my opinion, EMGs sound thin and lifeless...

Well my soldering was utter shit with the p90s..i'm not an electrician etc..LOL..I don't have the budget for kickass pick ups yet.And then when you got the best you find out you got a shitty fx board or multifx pedal..so then you wanna get the 1000 dolla Multi fx pedals and ya keep on going.
I think I'll get more sustain but I like p90 but have to learn how to install electro.

ELVIS
08-29-2014, 09:25 AM
It all depends though...

P90's generally sound great, but they do hum quite a bit...

And in the wrong guitar they can sound really bad...

I use the very expensive trial and error method...

It's a good way to sharpen your soldering skills, as well...;)

It is nice wood to carve...It sounds nice without amp..is very thin body..dunno if the floyd rose will break off cause I had problems in that area..dunno if the wood can handle the pressure of the floyd after a while.

This is being real nitpicky, but if that guitar wasn't quite so pointy toward the neck (devil horns, lol) it would be an almost perfect guitar.

Cut/rout the cracks out and glue in another solid piece of wood?

There's a guitar shop owner on one of the forums I frequent that performs miracles on guitars with broken headstocks...he'll rout out a channel and make a spline to fit in it. Same technique may work here.

here are pics of the bridgepocket ..it was a disaster from the start..First time i screwed up the studs I filled the holes again with wood..then I drilled wrong way again..then screwed an entire new block of wood and then the crack..edge was way to thin..LOL

I think I might saw off the wings/horns and put an entire new piece in the middel..when all looks good I'll make the horns round and organic.

But now I'm gonna try the strat first..also put my emgs on ebay LOL
