Daily Caller (http://dailycaller.com/2014/05/12/global-cooling-antarctic-sea-ice-coverage-continues-to-break-records/)

Someone let Al Gore know the South Pole isn’t melting. Antarctic sea ice coverage reached record levels for April, hitting 3.5 million square miles — the largest on record.

http://cdn01.dailycaller.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/2014-01-04T215329Z_1_CBREA031OT800_RTROPTP_4_ANTARCTICA-SHIP-RESCUE-e1399928039544.jpg

It was a cold summer down in Antarctica, with sea ice coverage growing about 43,500 square miles a day, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSDC). April 2014 beats the previous sea-ice coverage record from April 2008 by a whopping 124,000 square miles.

But even with autumn in full swing in the South Pole, “record levels continue to be set in early May,” reports the NSDC. Sea ice levels have been “significantly above” satellite data averages for 16 consecutive months.

The most pronounced growth in sea-ice coverage is in the eastern Weddell Sea and areas south of Australia and along the southeastern Indian Ocean, according to NSDC. And temperatures in the Weddell Sea region have been 1 to 2 degrees Celsius below the 1981 to 2010 average during March and April. Similar cooling trends have lowered average temperatures along the southern Indian Ocean by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius.

“However, across much of the far Southern Hemisphere, temperatures have been above average: For example, in the southern Antarctic Peninsula, temperatures have been 1 to 2 degrees Celsius (2 to 4 degrees Fahrenheit) above average; in the southern South Pacific, temperatures have been 1.5 to 2.5 degrees Celsius (3 to 4 degrees Fahrenheit) above average, and up to 4 degrees Celsius (7 degrees Fahrenheit) above average in the area near the South Pole,” NSDC notes.

Antarctica has seen huge sea-ice growth throughout this year and last, which caught many climate scientists by surprise — some more literally than others.

In late December, a group of tourists and climate scientists got caught in Antarctic ice pack about 1,500 miles south of Tasmania. The expedition sought to document how global warming has changed the region in the last century, but instead made world headlines for getting stuck in record levels of ice.

“We’re stuck in our own experiment,” the Australasian Antarctic Expedition said in a statement. “We came to Antarctica to study how one of the biggest icebergs in the world has altered the system by trapping ice.”

The expedition was eventually rescued by helicopter and brought back to Australia. To make a bad trip worse, the ice breaker that rescued the expeditionaries also got stuck in some ice on its way back.

But while eastern areas of Antarctica are growing rapidly, scientists are warning that the continent’s western ice sheet has begun to collapse.

“Today we present observational evidence that the [ice sheet] has gone into irreversible retreat,” said Eric Rignot, the lead author of a study claiming the ice sheet was collapsing. “It has reached the point of no return.”

Rignot told reporters at a press conference hosted by NASA that the slow collapse of the glacier could raise sea levels between 10 and 13 feet.

New scientist article

http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn25556-collapse-of-antarctic-glaciers-seems-to-be-unstoppable.html#.U3JLeYu9LCQ

Parts of the West Antarctic ice sheet are already collapsing and probably can't be saved. Two independent studies suggest that several glaciers have gone past the point of no return, dooming them to fall into the sea and cause several metres of sea level rise. However the collapse will take centuries.

"A large sector of the West Antarctic ice sheet has gone into irreversible retreat," says Eric Rignot of the University of California at Irvine, who led one of the studies. "We've gone beyond the point of no return."

A study led by Ian Joughin of the University of Washington in Seattle focuses on the Thwaites glacier, a key component of the West Antarctic ice sheet (WAIS). It predicts that the glacier will collapse completely within 200 to 1000 years, raising global sea levels by about 60 centimetres.

But because the Thwaites glacier keeps much of the rest of the WAIS in check, its disappearance could destabilise the entire sheet, releasing enough ice to raise sea levels by a further 3 to 4 metres.

Shrinking ice
Joughin and his colleagues used radar images from the air to accurately map the rocks beneath the Thwaites glacier. This enabled them to map the receding "grounding line", the point at which a glacier rests on open water rather than on rock. The deeper the grounding line penetrates inland, the more ice is supported by water alone, and the likelier it is to collapse and melt.

Using this information, they modelled the glacier's likely fate over the coming centuries, and projected that a rapid collapse will begin between 200 and 900 years in the future. Once under way, the collapse would cause sea levels to rise by at least 10 centimetres per century.

"The bad news is that such a collapse may be inevitable," says Joughin. The only uncertainty is over how fast the collapse will happen.

All in retreat
The other study, led by Rignot, tracked the retreats between 1992 and 2011 of the Thwaites glacier, the Pine Island Glacier and the Smith-Kohler glacier system. The results of both studies tally.

Rignot and his colleagues used radar interferometry measurements from satellites to track the retreats of the grounding lines of the glaciers.

Measured at their centres, the Thwaites glacier had retreated 14 kilometres, the Pine Island glacier by 31 kilometres, and the Smith-Kohler glacier system by 35 kilometres.

"The grounding line has been retreating at record speeds unseen anywhere else in the Antarctic," says Rignot.

No stopping it
Both studies found that there are no obstacles further inland, such as rocky outcrops, that could halt the retreats. "There's no barrier to stop it," says Rignot.

For that reason, Joughin says the Thwaites glacier is probably doomed. "It looks like all the feedbacks tend to point towards it actually accelerating over time, as there's no stabilising mechanism we can see," he says.

According to Rignot, the same is true for all the glaciers in the area, except the relatively small Haynes glacier. "Even if the ocean was not warming up, it's now a chain reaction that's unstoppable," he says.

"The only thing that would stop it is a mountain where glaciers would have to climb uphill," adds Rignot. "We are fairly confident there's no such hill or mountain."

There are no corporations involved with Marxism. You mean a Fascist goal with a green wrapper. With Marxism everything is owned by the state. With fascism corporations and the state work together to form a tyranny. A good example would be Nazi Germany. You had an authoritarian state but you had corporations working with it. Marxism would be the Soviet Union where there were no corporations or private companies. Everything was state owned.

But that's not all that surprising, considering most of the damage that was done to this country came from the Hitler funding BCE and the Stalin funded KKKoch Brothers.

Ah they waited too long. Nobody in Washington is popular enough to lead the jack booted cause. The cat is out of the bag. Three years ago I was wondering why people weren't pissed off. They should have been pissed off a long time ago. They are pretty pissed off now. Finally.

But fear pornographers like Glenn Beck and Alex Jones make a lucrative living selling the George Orwell story. There might be some truth to it but take it with a 50lb bag of salt.

Always follow the money. Always ask who benefits and never get emotional. That's what all these cocksuckers do. Play with people's emotions and if you are above that little trick, they can't manipulate you. Why do you think there is all this news coverage on gays, racism, abortion, gun control and such. They are emotional topics. They get the masses stirred. Don't fall for it. Stay calm and look for the pickpockets.

Because if he did, the KKKochwhore senators from Louisiana would vote AGAINST it. Even the one who claims to be a "Democrat".

There absolutely should be an infrastructure project of FDR era proportions in this country right now, both to bring this country into the 21st century AND to create living wage American jobs (with a stipulation that ONLY American made parts and materials would be used in such a project).

But with these obstructionist assholes in Congress, it's not going to happen. Barry's original Stimulus bill contained some (but not nearly enough) infrastructure building, but the obstructionist Repukes took it out of the bill.

Fossil Fuel Funding to Congress: Industry influence in the U.S.

http://priceofoil.org/content/uploads/2012/01/big-oil-5-300x279.jpg

For information on how much YOUR Representatives, and the current Congress are taking from the fossil fuel industry, be sure to visit DirtyEnergyMoney.com

What if you were in Vegas, and a friend told you there was a slot machine in the corner that was giving out $59 for every $1 that was put in? You’d think the machine was broken, and that it was rigged.

What if an investment advisor told you that he could get you $59 back for every $1 you gave him? That’s a 5800% rate of return. Even Bernie Madoff only promised 10.5%. Obviously a scam, right?

Clearly this is a scam, but if you’re the oil, gas and coal industry, it’s legal and business as usual in Washington. For every $1 the industry spends on campaign contributions and lobbying in DC, it gets back $59 in subsidies.

Here’s how it works:

Amount the fossil fuel industry spent during the 111th Congress (2009 & 2010) on contributions to Congress’ campaigns: $25,794,747

Oil and Gas lobbying total 2009: $175,454,820

Oil and Gas lobbying total 2010 : $146,032,543

TOTAL amount spent by Big Fossil in 111th Congress: $347,282,110 ($347 million and change)

2009 amount given to fossils in federal subsidies: $8,910,440,000 ($8.9 billion)

2010 amount given to fossils in federal subsidies: $11,578,900,000 ($11.5 billion)

TOTAL amount given to fossils during 111th Congress: $20,489,340,000

(Source for subsidies is the international government funded Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development – OECD. Original available here and broken out by US Federal totals here. More details on fossil fuel subsidies available here.)

Divide total subsidies by total money spent by the industry and you get 59.

$1 in. $59 out. That’s a 5800% return on political investment. Not bad.

US Oil lobby outspends green movement by factor of five
Last updated on 13 February 2012, 3:13 pm

By John Parnell

Lobbyists backing US oil and gas interests outspent their environmental counterparts by a factor of five during a two-year, non-election period.

The data from MapLight, shows that oil and gas companies donated $15,078,146 to Republican Senators and members of congress.

Environmental groups meanwhile, donated $2,847,072 to Democrat Senators and members of congress.

The recent Keystone XL pipeline decision highlighted the extent linkages between the industry and individual political issues.

Koch Industries, one of the largest importers of Canadian oil, would stand to benefit greatly from the pipelines construction. The company donated 10% of the total oil and gas funding to republicans during this two-year period.

Writing in The Guardian recently, anti-Keystone campaign chief Bill McKibben pointed out the link between votes and financing from the fossil fuel lobby.

“Congress decided it wanted to take up the question. Within days, and after only a couple of hours of hearings that barely mentioned the key scientific questions or the dangers involved, the House of Representatives voted 234-194 to force a quicker review of the pipeline,” wrote McKibben.

“As important as the vote total in the House, however, was another number: within minutes of the vote, Oil Change International had calculated that the 234 congressional representatives who voted aye had received $42m in campaign contributions from the fossil-fuel industry; the 193 nays, $8m.”

Climate scientists have also been under financial pressure with sceptic groups pursing legal action to gain access to private emails.

The Climate Science Legal Defense Fund has been established to provide legal representation to scientists battling such claims. The fund had raised $25,000 at the time of launch earlier this month.

A running theme during election campaigns in the US is campaign finance. Donations are charted by the press as a metric for a campaign’s relative success.

This year’s election is the first since the Supreme Court removed the cap on donations.

So-called Super PACs (Political Action Committees) can make unlimited donations on the condition that they do not liaise directly the candidates they support.

The rule has been mocked by US satirist Stephen Colbert who ran in the South Carolina primary.

Having set-up a regular, PAC last year in his own name, he was able to hand-off ownership to fellow comedian Jon Stewart as a Super PAC called “The definitely not coordinating with Stephen Colbert Super PAC”.

Election spending doubled from 2004 to 2008. Current projections show that spending on TV adverts will rise by 80% compared to 2012.

Marxism is the claim that industrialization would eventually lead to the collapse of the capitalist system of private property.

Wrong, fuckface. Marxism is the theoretical construct that capitalism exploits the working class. Look at Henry Ford, he was both a industrialist and a capitalist who believed in equal pay and private property. Marx had postulated that the struggle for personal livelihood was a chief concern among wage earners during the initial stage of industrialization. In other words, you fucking Nazi, Marx held to the adage that man does not live by bread alone but that he must live on sufficient bread in order to live at all. Kinds of puts your warped ideology on capitalist systems like Walmart who pay the worker little to survive on at all in a whole new perspective does it not!?

Marxism has been dumbed down to mean any attempt to share the wealth.
Strike two, fuckface. Marxism is has been distorted by capitalist who place Marx's quantitative economic consideration of the necessity biologic needs are forced upon society and quickly satiated. In other words, the rich only look out for themselves and cry foul when they soon realize nothing they do in life does not come with a price. Example? The Koch Brothers who rape the earth for personal gain and have no qualms in the damage they do to others in the process. Again, it's not about sharing any wealth, it's about exploiting the poor, the uneducated, the disenfranchised. You know, people like you and Smellvis who are the ones "dumbed down" who believe that a captilist system hold your best interests in heart.

The economic situation is a basis, but the various elements of the superstructure...also exercise their influence upon the course of historical struggles and in many cases, preponderate in determining their form. There is an interaction of all these element in which...the economic movement finally assets itself as necessity..."

The current state of the US is the result of a few generations having it good, getting complacent, and being distracted by entertainment. With Bubba distracted the corporate gangsters took advantage and the robber barons are in charge. We went through a similar thing a century ago. The thing is we didn't have a big military to bully people with as much back then. Oh we might have stolen Hawaii and a few things but the geopolitical abuse was less.

We made things more equal over the years. We got the slaves off the plantation. Now everyone is a slave unless you are in the top 1%.

You can have a Marxist system or a capitalist system and what happens in the end is a few people at the top end up running the whole show. Capitalism unchecked becomes an oligarchy in the end. It's why you need a democratic republic government to keep the markets fair. Since human beings tend to be greedy son of a bitches and are far from perfect, there is no perfect system.

I've never seen a Marxist system better a capitalistic system with the proper government regulation. Communism just doesn't work. The central planning is usually a disaster and it always ends up going broke. You just don't have the incentive or drive in such a system. As the old soviet joke goes,"We pretend to work and they pretend to pay us."

What failed in the US was the citizens. They failed to keep their government in check and the government failed to keep the free markets fair. The oligarchs bought off the government because the government bought off the citizens. As long as everyone got their pork or welfare, nobody cared what the politicians did. People really do get the government they deserve. The citizens of the US achieved the rarity of having self-government and pissed it away. What a sorry bunch of pricks.

Scientists can study Earth’s climate as far back as 800,000 years by drilling core samples from deep underneath the ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica. Detailed information on air temperature and CO2 levels is trapped in these specimens. Current polar records show an intimate connection between atmospheric carbon dioxide and temperature in the natural world. In essence, when one goes up, the other one follows.

again, why are you here?

Atheism, as the denial of this unreality, has no longer any meaning, for atheism is a negation of God, and postulates the existence of man through this negation; but socialism as socialism no longer stands in any need of such a mediation. It proceeds from the theoretically and practically sensuous consciousness of man and of nature as the essence. Socialism is man’s positive self-consciousness, no longer mediated through the abolition of religion, just as real life is man’s positive reality, no longer mediated through the abolition of private property, through communism. Communism is the position as the negation of the negation, and is hence the actual phase necessary for the next stage of historical development in the process of human emancipation and rehabilitation. Communism is the necessary form and the dynamic principle of the immediate future, but communism as such is not the goal of human development, the form of human society.

You really want to go there?

I'm all for global warming. Current studies indicate that if the polar ice caps all melted I'd be just a few miles from the beach.

Also what is underneath all that antarctic ice? The remains of a tropical rain forest. Gee. The climate has been changing for a long time. The earth isn't static, it's dynamic. Ah the way we are going we will nuke ourselves before climate change does us in.

Nitro and Elvis are right.

The History of the Earth has shown it has never not stopped changing.

I think on the world clock humans have existed only 3 seconds.

Carbon taxes are nothing more than a tax scheme..our Liberals love the idea...it keeps the enviros happy...and provides a lovely pot to dip into.

All Carbon taxes do is create a system where the richest company will still pollute!

The smallest companies that can not afford to pay will then be absorbed by the larger companies...why are we pushing for this?

The focus must remain on pollution...not Climate Change.

We must do better for the environment we live in...the focus should be on forcing governments to tighten regulations on polluting...not endorsing a smoke show fueled by user fees.

...forget to mention...do not forget the added Carbon Tax to our monthly expenses...we won't get away from it.

We will pay.

The best angle is still stronger regulations against polluting...keep it off a tax based penalty.

Research which heaped doubt on the rate of global warming was deliberately suppressed by scientists because it was “less than helpful” to their cause, it was claimed last night.Global Warming Policy Foundation (http://www.thegwpf.org/scientists-in-cover-up-of-damaging-climate-view/)

http://www.politicshome.com/timthumb.php?w=578&src=/images/Times_160514.jpg

In an echo of the infamous “Climategate” scandal at the University of East Anglia, one of the world’s top academic journals rejected the work of five experts after a reviewer privately denounced it as “harmful”.

Lennart Bengtsson, a research fellow at the University of Reading and one of the authors of the study, said he suspected that intolerance of dissenting views on climate science was preventing his paper from being published.

“The problem we now have in the climate community is that some scientists are mixing up their scientific role with that of a climate activist,” he added.

Professor Bengtsson’s paper challenged the finding of the UN’s Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) that the global average temperature would rise by up to 4.5C if greenhouse gases in the atmosphere were allowed to double.

It suggested that the climate might be much less sensitive to greenhouse gases than had been claimed by the IPCC in its report last September, and recommended that more work be carried out “to reduce the underlying uncertainty”.

The five contributing scientists, from America and Sweden, submitted the paper to Environmental Research Letters, one of the most highly regarded journals, at the end of last year but were told in February that it had been rejected.

A scientist asked by the journal to assess the paper under the peer review process wrote that he strongly advised against publishing it because it was “less than helpful”.

The unnamed scientist concluded: “Actually it is harmful as it opens the door for oversimplified claims of ‘errors’ and worse from the climate sceptics media side.”

Professor Bengtsson resigned from the advisory board of Lord Lawson of Blaby’s climate sceptic think-tank this week after being subjected to what he described as McCarthy-style pressure from fellow academics.

Lord Lawson, the former Conservative chancellor, said that the pressure exerted by other climate scientists had been appalling and the comparison with McCarthyism was “fully warranted”.

The claims are a stark reminder of events at the University of East Anglia in 2009. Scientists there were accused of manipulating data and suppressing critics of global warming predictions in the run-up to the crucial Copenhagen climate change conference.

They were later cleared, though the IPCC was found to have misrepresented their research by failing to reflect uncertainties over raw temperature data. Professor Bengtsson, the former director of the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg, said he accepted that emissions would increase the global average temperature but the key question was how quickly.

He added that it was “utterly unacceptable” to advise against publishing a paper on the ground that the findings might be used by climate sceptics to advance their arguments.

“It is an indication of how science is gradually being influenced by political views. The reality hasn’t been keeping up with the [computer] models.

Therefore, if people are proposing to do major changes to the world’s economic system we must have much more solid information.”

Scientists from around the world sent messages of support to Professor Bengtsson.

Who do you think is behind the Climate Change scare?

They want us focusing and fighting about that rather than stronger regulations on Polluting.

The best option is to have it as a major election issue...but they have steered us clear of that.

An example of avoiding the whole picture with a little diversion(attack) is this article...even the pretend enviros are in on it.

Vivian Krause: New U.S. funding for the war on Canadian oil

Tides USA letters reveal $3.2-million in payments over last few months to activists groups and environmental organizations in Canada, U.S. and Europe. The objective: Create opposition to Canadian oil developments.

.
For more than a decade, there has been a complex international effort to stymie the oil industry in Canada. It’s called the Tar Sands Campaign and the main sources of funding for this campaign are the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, the William & Flora Hewlett Foundation, the Oak Foundation, the Sea Change Foundation, the Tides Foundation and other charitable foundations, most of which are based in California. By my calculations, these foundations have provided at least $75-million for campaigns and land use planning initiatives that thwart the development and export of Canadian oil. Until now, little information has been available about the specific activities that have been funded. Not anymore.

Earlier this month, an unprecedented amount of detail came to light in a series of covering letters for 70 payments sent by the San Francisco-based Tides Foundation (“Tides USA”) to 45 organizations in the U.S., Canada and Europe. These payments total $3.2-million. I came across these covering letters using Google. All of the letters that I’ve seen are signed by Gary D. Schwarz, the interim CEO of Tides USA. Most of these letters were sent between June and October of 2013.

Mr. Schwarz’s covering letters stipulate a list of conditions including, for example, that the recipient organization agrees “not to use any portion of the granted funds to carry on propaganda nor to attempt to influence specific legislation either by direct or grassroots lobbying.” And yet these letters suggest to me that this is precisely what Tides is funding.

The numbering and timing of these payments indicates that they have been made systematically. For example, between August 2 and September 29, Tides made 27 consecutively numbered payments for a total of $1.9-million. In all cases, the donor is listed as “an existing fund.” Generally, the existing fund is not identified.

The recipients are clearly identified. From the Great Bear Rainforest Initiative and the First Nations at Fort Chipewayan to the groups pushing for the EU Fuel Quality Directive in Europe, virtually every organization that campaigns against the Alberta oil industry is funded by Tides USA, these letters reveal.

Among the initiatives that Tides USA funds are LeadNow, Idle No More, the Indigenous Tar Sands campaign, the Tanker Free Coast campaign, Pipe Up, the Tar Sands Reality Check, the Canadian Youth Climate Coalition, PowerShift and Save the Salish Sea. The gist of these initiatives is to foment opposition to pipeline and export infrastructure that is essential for getting Canadian energy to global markets.

Seven payments mention building relationships with First Nations, “indigenous solidarity,” resistance and opposition along pipeline routes. For example, through the Tides Canada Foundation Exchange Fund, Tides USA paid $35,000 for re-granting to West Coast Environmental Law “to provide legal strategies and communication support to First Nations to constrain tar sands development.”

Through the Tides Canada Foundation Exchange Fund, Tides USA also paid $15,000 to the Sierra Club of BC for a project called, “Our Coast, Our Call: Mobilizing and Strengthening Opposition to Tanker Expansion on the B.C. Coast.”

Even before the recommendations of the Joint Panel Review of the Northern Gateway pipeline are in, Tides USA has paid First Nations in B.C. to respond to the panel and to media. On August 9, 2013, Tides USA paid $67,500 to the Great Bear Initiative Society “for work with Coastal First Nations on the Central and North Coasts to prepare for the federal consultations; respond to media; and raise awareness of the costs of an oil spill and respond to Joint Review Panel (JRP) recommendations.” Tides USA paid $25,000 to the same group “to enforce the oil tanker ban for the Great Bear Rainforest through communications outreach, to maintain opposition to oil tankers, and to increase public support against the Northern Gateway pipeline.” Both of the letters regarding these payments were sent to the attention of Mr. Art Sterritt.

Tides funds the Dogwood Initiative “to cultivate widespread public opposition to tar sands oil tankers and pipeline proposals in British Columbia.” Note that Dogwood isn’t paid to oppose all tankers, only “tar sands oil tankers” — in other words, only tankers exporting Canadian oil.

On August 9, 2013, Pembina was paid $225,000 “to advance policy improvements, the narrative that oilsands expansion is problematic, land use decisions that slow expansion, and improved climate policy.” Tides USA also funded Pembina “to provide regular briefings to the Tar Sands Group and broaden the base of key influencers.” Earlier in the year Tides USA paid Pembina $55,000 “for furthering awareness of the negative impacts of the tar sands economy.” Indeed, with the recent release of its recent report, “Booms, Busts and Bitumen,” Pembina did just that.

Environmental Defence Canada was paid $212,500 by Tides USA “for outreach and education on the Line 9 and Energy East pipelines; ongoing promotion of Tar Sands Reality Check; leading government relations work in Ottawa; promotion of the Fuel Quality Directive (FQD); and supporting the work of allies.”

Equiterre was paid $75,000 by Tides USA “to educate the public on Line 9 and Energy East, participate in the regulatory process for Line 9, and assist in promoting Tar Sands Reality Check in Quebec and raising awareness of the economic challenges with tar sands development.” Greenpeace Canada was paid $90,000 “for events that show opposition to pipelines and tar sands expansion, for ongoing participation in the AB pipeline review, and for continued work to expose the nefarious work of industry and government in order to expand the tar sands” and a further $100,000 for similar purposes.

The problem that I see with these payments is that creating a negative narrative and cultivating opposition is not what charitable foundations are supposed to fund nor is it what registered charities in Canada are supposed to do.

“To be considered charitable, an educational activity must be reasonably objective and based on a well-reasoned position. This means a position that is based on factual information that is methodically, objectively, fully, and fairly analyzed. In addition, a well-reasoned position should present serious arguments and relevant facts to the contrary,” says the Canada Revenue Agency.

Some payments mention a specific pipeline company: TransCanada pipelines (Keystone XL and Line 9) are mentioned in regards to 15 payments, Enbridge in 11 and Kinder Morgan in six.

Some payments mention specific pipelines, including Line 9, the Clipper/Line 67 expansion, Energy East, as well as pipelines in the MacKenzie valley and New England. For example, the National Wildlife Federation, based in Washington D.C., was paid $50,000 “to organize opposition to the Enbridge Line 67 expansion and the Keystone XL pipeline.”

Living Oceans Society was paid $30,000 “to build opposition to the KM pipeline; conduct research on risks to human health from an oil spill, risks to wildlife, and the “blue economy;” implement comprehensive rollout strategies for the research results including ethnic audiences; and renew opposition parties’ commitment to tanker ban.” Living Oceans was also paid $6,000 for a project titled, “Exposing the threats to human health posed by a Kinder Morgan spill.”

Tides also funds the beginning of a new campaign against InSitu mining, according to one letter to the Keepers of the Athabasca Watershed Society.

The EU Fuel Quality Directive is mentioned in the covering letters regarding five payments that I’ve seen. For example, on September 13, 2013 a numbered company in Fort Chipewayan was paid $55,000 “to build the case for rejecting the Shell and Teck Frontier mines; participate in regulatory processes and use legal tools to increase regulations; work with groups in Europe to support the Fuel Quality Directive (FQD); and build public opposition to tar sands and pipelines.”

Tides USA paid the same amount to the same numbered company in 2012, tax returns show.

For a project titled, “Stop Shell and Keep Tar Sands Out of Europe,” Tides USA paid $12,000 to the U.K. Tar Sands Network, based in Oxford. Tides USA also funds Friends of the Earth in Europe and the European Federation for Transport & Environment, both based in Belgium.

In the U.S., Tides paid $1.5-million to 21 organizations including funds organizing landowners, for the Nebraska Farmers Union and for “using creative action” in small towns and rural communities along the proposed Keystone XL pipeline route.

The Sierra Club was paid $165,000 “for organizing and mobilizing opposition to the Keystone XL pipeline and other tar sands projects and for coordination with Canadian colleagues.”

The New York-based Natural Resources Defense Council was paid $150,000 for policy analysis and advice and for “co-ordinating allies” in Canada and Europe. It was also paid to co-ordinate the Tar Sands Free Northeast Coalition, particularly at the municipal level.

.
Forest Ethics was paid $155,000 “… to persuade a minimum of either Coke or Pepsi to confirm publicly that they have committed to eliminate fuel that comes from tar sands refineries” – in other words, Canadian oil.

Environmental activism is important, but we need activists to play the role of honest brokers, not shake-down artists.

Vivian Krause is a Vancouver-based researcher and writer. On Twitter, she’s @FairQuestions.

It's much sooner than that and I bet it takes a lot less than 10 foot to fuck you up.

30 years ago? There are a few problems with that dumb old argument.

a) It refers to the 1970s so that's 40 years now keep up
b) It's partly based on a hoax http://science.time.com/2013/06/06/sorry-a-time-magazine-cover-did-not-predict-a-coming-ice-age/
c) So fucking what? The difference between science and superstition/religion is that science is constantly checking and rechecking whether it's correct or not. Computer modelling in the 1970s verses computer modelling now?

Dude, you've never made one post that shows you know anything more about science than I do or the next guy...

Climate change doesn't have to be proven...

The earth is a dynamic planet...

It goes in and out of an ice age about every 100,000 years...

Then about 15 or so years ago we had "global warming" and we were told that co2 was leading the warming...

But 15 years on, it didn't get warmer, it got cooler...

Right on track with the Milankovitch cycles...

The so called warming associated with the onset of the industrial age is made up propaganda designed to make you worship government...

And it's working on you, so far...

Maybe it's the nanny state thing...;)

Heinekens uncertainty principle , in as much as I had no idea how many beers I had last night .

But, Vandy, unlike the temperature outside my house, or the "climate" in the Sahara desert, you can measure the number of beers you actually consumed. You just count up the ones in the trash can, the ones you hid under the sink and the two or three you tossed out the back door so wifey wouldn't find out. See how simple that is? It's not all esoteric like studying global warming where the variables, such as weather and climate, have absolutely no relationship at all. I'll give you an example: What's the weather in the Sahara Desert? What's the climate in the Sahara Desert? See - totally unrelated!

Sounds like a good idea. That's how Hitler became the Fuhrer. :yikes:

No, that's how FDR prevented an American Fuhrer.

Germany was as fucked as the US was in the late 20s - early 30s.

Both got out of their depressions, but using dramatically different paths to get there.

Prescott Bush and his pals would have preferred the Hitler approach here. They tried to push a military coup against FDR, in fact. Unfortunately for them, and fortunately for all of us, they picked the wrong general to lead them. A true patriot named Smedley Butler (USMC) who told them to fuck off, and then exposed their treason.

Global Warming is like religion. You can be saved from destruction if everyone sends the fear monger their money. Somehow this pleases God and cools the earth. This is all that is needed. So brothers and sisters send Nitro your tithes and offerings or 10% carbon tax and worry not. But if you fail to do so; especially you heathens on the coast. You will be destroyed!

So if the industrial age and "global warming" causes bad weather, what about storms like the 1722 Hurricane ??

Great Louisana Hurricane of 1722.

Moved through Lesser Antilles on September 11.

This hurricane is the first tropical storm to strike the region for which there are adequate first-hand accounts and almost completely destroyed the city's fragile existing infrastructure.

Storm made landfall in Louisiana on September 23 with 15 hours of hurricane winds and an 8-foot storm surge flooding.

Hurricane force winds lasted 15 hours.

In 1718, 3 feet (1m) high levees protected New Orleans from both river and tidal overflow (today they are 17 feet (5.2 m) high).

The buildings in New Orleans suffered extensive destruction, though they were not of high grade construction having been hastily constructed when New Orleans was initially selected to be the capital of the Louisiana Company in 1717-18.

The bayou between New Orleans and Biloxi was filled with two to three feet (0.6-0.9 m) of water as a result of the storm and all ships at port were destoyed.

Rainfall and flooding were reported to have lasted for five days. This storm was responsible for moving Mobile from its old site 27 miles (43 km) north of the mouth of the Mobile River to its present-day site.

This same storm likely re-curved northeast and headed into South Carolina as they reported three days of flooding rains in SC around the 27th.

What about the countless other storms and hurricanes from the same period and going back 200 to 300 years ??

What if '97 percent' of scientists are wrong?

http://s1.reutersmedia.net/resources/r/?m=02&d=20140520&t=2&i=898289645&w=580&fh=&fw=&ll=&pl=&r=LYNXMPEA4J042

Secretary of State John Kerry did not shy away from pejorative language when addressing "climate change" in his commencement speech at Boston College on Monday. Kerry referred to those skeptical of the Obomba administration's climate claims as "members of the Flat Earth Society" who are "risking nothing less than the future of the entire planet" by resisting implementation of the administration's policies. At the very least, Kerry argued, what have we got to lose by taking the steps he and the president are advocating? [emphasis added]:

If we make the necessary efforts to address this challenge – and supposing I’m wrong or scientists are wrong, 97 percent of them all wrong – supposing they are, what’s the worst that can happen? We put millions of people to work transitioning our energy, creating new and renewable and alternative; we make life healthier because we have less particulates in the air and cleaner air and more health; we give ourselves greater security through greater energy independence – that’s the downside. This is not a matter of politics or partisanship; it’s a matter of science and stewardship. And it’s not a matter of capacity; it’s a matter of willpower.

Kerry also suggested there's not much time to act, because "things will change in a hurry," and indeed some things have already changed:

Two major recent reports, one from the UN and one from retired U.S. military leaders, warn us not just of the crippling consequences to come, but that some of them are already here. Ninety-seven percent of the world’s scientists tell us this is urgent. Why? Because if crops can’t grow, there’ll be food insecurity. If there’s less water because of longer droughts, if there are stronger and more powerful storms, things will change in a hurry and they will change for the worse.

Kerry seemed to be echoing the words of French foreign minister Laurent Fabius who last week at an appearance with the secretary said that "we have 500 days to avoid climate chaos." As CNS News later reported, Fabius went on to warn that the earth stands at "the edge of a climatic abyss." He was heartened, however, from some "glimmers of hope," adsserting that since the 2009 Copenhagen climate conference, "climate denial is – at least in Europe – less audible."
