11845(CNN) -- Tributes are flowing in for much-loved British actor and comedian Rik Mayall, who died in London Monday at age 56.
Mayall, one of the leading lights of Britain's alternative comedy scene in the 1980s, is best known for starring roles in hit TV series "Blackadder," "The Young Ones," "The New Statesman" and "Bottom."
His agent, Kate Benson, of Brunskill Management, told CNN Mayall died suddenly Monday; she did not know the cause of his death.
Mayall first found widespread fame in student sitcom "The Young Ones," which ran for two years on the BBC, and was later shown on MTV in the United States.
The series, which he co-wrote, focused on the lives of four roommates at "Scumbag College." Mayall played politics-obsessed poet Rick alongside his long-term comedy partner Ade Edmondson as violent punk Vyvyan.
Edmondson led the tributes to Mayall Monday, telling Britain's Press Association news agency: "There were times when Rik and I were writing together when we almost died laughing.
"They were some of the most carefree, stupid days I ever had, and I feel privileged to have shared them with him. And now he's died for real. Without me. Selfish bastard.

I didn't know if he was well known in the US.

He is an absolute legend for a couple of generations of British.

It's one of those rare celebrity deaths that actually leaves you feeling a bit pissed off like you lost an uncle or something...

If you were a teenager in the 80s and had cable you should know Rik. MTV ran the shit out of the Young Ones in the mid 80s. I had a buddy who was a serious stoner and he was convinced the subliminal messages in the Young Ones were aimed directly at him, lol.

You can blame one of my ex -girlfriends from back in the Poppy Bush era. She got me into all those old Britcoms like The Young Ones and Red Dwarf. If I had any clue how to get in touch with her, I'd call her, as I'm sure she's probably sad about this news. :(

Somewhere in my incredibly overstuffed metal cabinet in my basement are stacks of old VHS from the '80's just crammed fulla Young Ones . Funny , funny stuff ! Loved the episode when Vyvyan stuck his head out the window of the high speed train and was suddenly be-headed . Gut busting laughter !

"Very very sad to learn of Rik Mayall's passing. Frank Oz and I saw him and Adrian Edmondson at the Comic Strip while I was in pre-production on 'An American Werewolf in London' and they were extraordinary. He did not believe me at first when afterwards I offered him a part. I just remember how excited Rik was to be in a movie and how good he was even in such a small role. It was no surprise to me he went on to The Young Ones and a brilliant career. A great loss of a truly gifted man." - John Landis, June 9th, 2014

Gotta love it when BBC actually manages to sneak one past the international censors at YouTube....

I never found the dude to be that funny, for some reason. I'm a big fan of Lord Flashheart - I'd shag him -, but the rest of his stuff never clicked with me.

It's always sad when a comedian dies, though... there aren't enough of the bastards around, these days. All you get is bad Adam Sandler clones, & cuntsidering the original was horrid to begin with, well...

R.I.P, Rik. From now on, in your honour, I'll touch myself more often whenever I watch the BlackAdder episodes you were in.

Cheers! :beers:
