The British lost in Hastings at 1066, La Rochelle, 1372, Orleans, 1429, Bordeaux, 1453, Medway, 1667 and The Hundred years war, 1337-1453. All of those were much closer than trying in the 1700s to fight a war across the Atlantic.

Also in any case historians estimate far more were pro independence than against 40% v 20% of the population.
