He always seemed to be touring near where I was, but I never saw him. I remember him being popular in high school, especially at parties. A few guys were obsessed with the guy. Great guitarist. I never quite got into his songs, though. I saw Edgar Winter live once. Good show.

Loved his guitar work, but it never seemed to translate to good songs overall. His jams were best.

Just when I think your ignorance couldn't get any greater, you step up to the plate and prove me wrong.

The drugs have fried what little intellect you were born with.

Chances are good you never heard a Johnny Winter tune in your life, Von.

Chances are good you never heard a Johnny Winter tune in your life, Von.

The chances are a lot greater, that you're a drug addict. A drug addict that limits what little brain activity you were born with, by doing dope. You are the poster child for dopes on dope.

Now go back to fucking yourself.

Not too shocked that he passed . He had been sick for several years . Didn't help that he was a long time hard core heroin addict which seriously derailed his career . He was a wonderful guitarist and rocked the slide like no ones business . Too bad he never reached the commercial success he deserved . Little known fact : He was a pall bearer for Jimi Hendrix . R.I.P. Johnny Winter .

I saw Johnnie and Edgar on a bill with Peter Frampton in 1976. Prompted me to buy their dual album with the green cover and all that white hair. Very talented man....RIP

Great player. He was a killer player live. That's the stuff I have of his. He had great bands. R.I.P.

Johnny Winter was a mediocre musician at best. A lot of his playing was sloppy, derivative and unintelligible. If Winter is to be recognized for anything it was he single-handled kept "Texas Blues" alive after the death of his original counterparts Lightin' Hopkins and the great Freddie King. He was known to be a tremendous influence one of the most derivative blues players Stevie Ray Vaughan but stayed away from Stevie believing he was a "sell out" of the blues which he was. That is one accolade that can never be taken away from Winter - that he never did sell out or became a traveling blues side show circus act like Robert Cray and Jonny Lang.

But his playing was sloppy and most of it was due to his heavy heroin use and chronic alcoholism. He did have a lot of punch and sway in his notes but they seemed to lack any character which made Johnny a inner circle musician among his colleagues. The dude is no Katy Perry. That's for sure.

Johnny Winter gave among the most exciting rock & blues music ever. Especially with And. "And Live" is surely one of the best remedies for asthenia, along with the Stones' "Brussels Affair" and AC/DC's "If you want blood you got it".
"Meantown Blues" is just fantastic. His guitar playing was terrific, let's not underrate his raucous voice that was as much his signature.

R.I.P

No, Kristy, let's not... At least here and in other places where ears are rock 'n' rolly tuned - how can you insert Katy Perry's stuff in a Johnny Winter tribute thread, if it isn't to scoff?
