Western intelligence services claim to have identified an Al-Qaeda splinter group which is attempting to use the influx of Westerners to Syria as a vector to launch a new wave of 9/11 style attacks on the West, but frustratingly almost nothing is known about them.
Until now the main concern about returning fighters from Syria has been radicalised young Islamists forming groups in their home nations and waging war on the streets of Europe. Now a newly identified group called Khorasan is changing perspectives, as they are absolutely focussed on fighting the “far enemy” - America and her allies, rather than the “near enemy” of factionalism infighting between dozens of near-identical Islamist groups in Syria.
The group identified as Khorasan is run by former senior Al-Qaeda commander Muhsin al-Fadhli, and according to former American director of national intelligence James Clapper is they are one to watch, as “in terms of threat to the homeland, Khorasan may pose as much of a danger as the Islamic State”, reports the Independent.
Khorasan is not believed to be fighting for territory in Syria or Iraq, but rather to gain influence and to take advantage of the influx of American and Western fighters who have arrived to support ISIS. Their raison d'etre appears to be the perpetuation of the aims and methods of its parent group Al-Qaeda against America and Europe.
Khorasan is especially interested in jihadists with European or American passports because they are perceived to be more potentially successful plane hijackers and bombers than non Westerners, who generally enjoy greater checks and scrutiny at borders and airports. Mike Morell, former director of the CIA said in an interview with CBS last week that Khorasan had been expressly dispatched to Syria by the Al-Qaeda authorities to harvest these passport holders because: “they see airlines as a powerful symbol of the West… they think if they can damage airlines they can damage the Western economy as we saw with 9/11”.
Morell says what is known about the group is highly classified, so the extent to which their recruiting mission has been successful, and the size of their resources and membership are all unknown outside of security circles, if indeed it is known there at all. Regardless, the main area of concern are it’s links with Al-Qaeda expert bomb makers and it’s broader outlook and focus on the “far enemy”, rather than the Islamic State’s “near enemy” territorial ambitions.
Group leader al-Fadhi has been on Western watch-lists since 2001, when it was suspected he was amongst the select few who knew about the 9/11 plot before it happened. Because of the highly cellular and decentralised nature of al-Qaeda, this placed him very high up the food chain in 2001, when he was only 19 years old.

Police: Woman beheaded at Oklahoma workplace


MOORE, Okla. - Police say a woman who was killed by a co-worker at a food distribution center in suburban Oklahoma City was beheaded and that witnesses have said the suspect had been trying to convince co-workers to convert to Islam.

Moore Police Sgt. Jeremy Lewis said Friday that 30-year-old Alton Nolen had been terminated from Vaughan Foods in Moore, where he worked as a production line employee, shortly before the incident took place on Thursday afternoon.

Lewis said Nolen exited the building after being fired and went to the parking lot where he drove his vehicle to the front of the business and hit another car. Nolen then walked into the front office and began attacking a woman with a standard knife used in the business, Lewis said.

Colleen Hufford, 54, was beheaded and another woman, 43-year-old Traci Johnson, was stabbed. Both victims were employees of Vaughan Foods, but according to Lewis, it appeared the women were not targeted and were instead stabbed at random.

Mark Vaughn, an off-duty officer who also serves as chief operating officer of the business, shot Nolen as he was stabbing Johnson.
Sgt. Lewis touted Vaughn as a hero Friday and said he saved Johnson's life.

"It could have gotten a lot worse. This guy wasn't going to stop," said Lewis.

Johnson and Nolen were still hospitalized Friday and were said to be in stable condition.

According to Lewis, statements were made to investigators that Nolen had recently converted to Islam and had been trying to convince employees to convert to as well. It is unclear whether this is why Nolen had been terminated from the business.

Police were called about 4:15 p.m. to reports of a fight inside Vaughan Foods.

Lewis says officers were told that there had been a stabbing and shooting.

The FBI is involved in the investigation and is currently conducting a background investigation into Nolen, Lewis said.

According to the Oklahoma Department of Corrections website, Nolen has a criminal history dating back to 2006 that includes charges of possession of a controlled substance and assault and battery on a police officer.

He was imprisoned from April 2011 to March 2013 and is currently listed as being on probation.

The Department of Corrections describes Nolen as having several tattoos, including a picture of Jesus Christ on his chest, praying hands on his arm and an inscription on his abdomen that says, "As-Salaamu Ataikum," an Arabic greeting often used by Muslims translating to, "Peace be upon you."

The only real answer is for the US to put the screws to the Saudis and the other gubments in the region that actually have any sway at all over their populations to crack down on the extremism they pay for with our money. I don't think strikes or "boots on the ground" are gonna work. Now, we do have this highly trained legion of killers called American Special Forces that could go in and smoke lots of these guys without having a huge American footprint in the region. But even that is a temporary solution unless the gubments in the region clamp down on their own people.
