Thirteen years after the original series run, FOX has ordered the next mind-bending chapter of THE X-FILES, a thrilling, six-episode event series which will be helmed by creator/executive producer Chris Carter with stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson re-inhabiting their roles as iconic FBI Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. This marks the momentous return of the Emmy- and Golden Globe Award-winning pop culture phenomenon, which remains one of the longest-running sci-fi series in network television history.



The announcement was made today by Dana Walden and Gary Newman, Chairmen and CEOs of Fox Television Group and Chris Carter, creator and executive producer of THE X-FILES. Production on THE X-FILES event series is set to begin in summer 2015. Further details remain under wraps and will be announced at a later date.



“I think of it as a 13-year commercial break,” said Carter. “The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories.”

Few shows on television have drawn such dedicated fans as THE X-FILES, and we’re ecstatic to give them the next thrilling chapter of Mulder and Scully they’ve been waiting for.”



THE X-FILES originally premiered in September 1993. Over the course of its nine-season run, the influential series went from breakout sci-fi favorite to massive global hit, and became one of the most successful television dramas of all time. The show, which earned 16 Emmy Awards, five Golden Globes and a Peabody Award, follows FBI special agents Scully (Anderson) and Mulder (Duchovny) as they investigate unexplained cases – “X-Files” – for which the only answers involve paranormal phenomena.



Produced by 20th Century Fox Television and Ten Thirteen Productions, THE X-FILES is created and executive-produced by Chris Carter.

Six stories/stand alone episodes? I think they'd be better off making a True Detectives type mini-series. The movies were awful. This is a shot at redemption. Carter should enlist The Loan Gunman's (and Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul) writer, Vince Gilligan, for help.

The first movie was good, the second one sucked. They waited far too long between films. The ending of the first one was set up for a sequel, but then they waited so long that the second one was completely unrelated to the first.

I'm sure that since he was a former X-Files writer, Gilligan would lend a hand.

I'm looking forward to this.

I just remember the first movie suffering from the same problem as the Star Trek Next Gen movies. Failure to make a motion picture as good as their best episode.

Crash and burn. Duchovny himself was the biggest critic of the show saying "it was out of ideas." The only reason for this "resurrection" would be simply for the money and that if this airs on network TV it's because the suits at the networks have no ideas themselves. This is the same avenue Fox took with 24 and that was total shit. Six episodes keeps production cost down (I suspect most of it will be CGI anyway) and networks suits do not have to go on the scrounge for advertisers as they would for a regular 22-24 episode season. Just by that alone you know this is going to suck.

But I can still recall parts of the first movie in my mind, so it did leave some sort of impression.

I have total mental block with the second one.

Hopefully this long layoff will have allowed some new, interesting ideas to percolate. I hope they get the original band back together with Carter, Gilligan, Shiban, Manners, Spotnitz, etc....

I don't know if anyone from the original production team has died in the interim...hopefully not.
