With lawmakers preparing to vote on a bill blocking parents from skipping vaccinations for their children, prominent vaccine skeptic Robert F. Kennedy Jr. arrived at the Sacramento screening of a film linking autism to the vaccine preservative thimerosal and warned that public health officials cannot be trusted.

“They can put anything they want in that vaccine and they have no accountability for it,” said Kennedy, who walked onto and left a Crest Theater stage to standing ovations, of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Wednesday afternoon will see the first hearing for a bill eliminating the personal belief exemption parents can cite in order to avoid vaccinating their kids. Senate Bill 277 was prompted by soaring exemption rates in some schools districts and outbreaks of long-dormant diseases like measles and whooping cough.

Kennedy has credited the film Trace Amounts with helping to persuade lawmakers to halt a vaccination measure in Oregon. Advocates offered free Trace Amounts tickets to every California lawmaker, visiting offices in the State Capitol on Monday to drop them off. Three rows cordoned off for lawmakers sat empty on Wednesday evening, though some staff members attended.

The overwhelming scientific consensus supports vaccine use and dismisses any serious side effects. Multiple studies have rejected any link between the mercury-containing chemical thimerosal and autism. Nevertheless, vaccine manufacturers have removed thimerosal from nearly all childhood vaccines (some influenza vaccines are the exception) and a California bill further barred thimerosal content.

In light of those facts, SB 277’s author called Kennedy’s continued activism disingenuous.

“I think it is dangerous that he is spreading misinformation about something that’s very important for public health,” Sen. Richard Pan, D-Sacramento, a pediatrician, said in an interview. “Autism rates have continued to rise even though we are not using thimerosal in vaccines for children,” he added. “We still haven’t figured out exactly what causes autism. We do know it’s not vaccines.”

But some parents fear information about the hazards of vaccines has been suppressed, largely because of what they call the pharmaceutical industry’s influence over health officials. Many parents believe their children have been damaged by vaccines. When Kennedy asked the crowd of a few hundred viewers how many parents had a child injured by vaccines, numerous hands went up.

“They get the shot, that night they have a fever of a hundred and three, they go to sleep, and three months later their brain is gone,” Kennedy said. “This is a holocaust, what this is doing to our country.”

Just to clarify RFK Jr's position (as he's mentioned it often on his Ring of Fire radio program) he's not anti-vaccine in general, but against mercury in vaccines, and against the drug companies rushing their products to the market without being properly tested.

And then forcibly giving them to the public...

I think he clarified his doofus position just fine with the gem below. Yep, it's a holocaust. Geezus.

Over-privileged douchebag from well known family - who it should be noted has clearly benefited from vaccinations - jumps on latest, most convenient panicky soccer-mom issue du jour in effort to prove that he "matters" re: the family legacy. Dad must be proud. Shaddup already.

Vaccines have wiped out many horrid diseases. My grandmother was crippled from polio. I didn't have to worry about ending up like that because of vaccines. What we are seeing is a distrust in the system. Understandable with the lack of real regulation on anything and those in power can do whatever they want. People don't trust the institutions like the FDA anymore since they know about the revolving door between the regulator and the regulated. People just don't trust the government anymore and why should they? Look at what's going on.

Not only is there no autism epidemic it's just the term used in diagnoses these days.

If there ever had been a link to mercury which there wasn't then the number of cases would have gone down since it was removed years ago. It hasn't.

I still think it is ill conceived that we give infants a powerful super cocktail of multiple vaccinations at once with all of the preservatives etc.

Why not space them out or give them individually? Makes more sense.

Part of the perceived link with autism is because the typical onset of noticeable tendencies coincides with the timing of the vaccinations or thereabouts.

All of the link apart from a really shitty study by a corrupt English doctor years ago who has since been banned from practicing.

As far as the multiple vaccine thing the argument for them is that there has been lots and lots of studies that have shown that there is no increased risk so it's seen as quicker and easier to just get it all over and done with. There are lots of issues with drug safety and in particular the way drug companies don't need to publish research which is gives poor results. Vaccines are different in that there has been so much more research done worldwide. In the case of kids vaccines and because of the scare from the faked English doctor study there have been literally hundreds, 600+ research studies and checks done on these.

It's much much much more dangerous not to have them.

Of course its much safer to have them, but you can't convince me that there is scientific evidence that supports its just better to get it over and done with...they are tiny tiny little humans and we blast our little toddlers with a cocktail of vaccines all at once? Why the rush? Why not over a month or six weeks? Probably because it would cost more to produce. Nothing to do with being proven safe...just convenient.
