I am finally calling up this morning, gonna mention the site if I get on, I wish I had a good question ready, seems to me you have to call up on the subject Dave seems to be talking about at the time, so I hope its something I can relate to, will see....
I was thinking about bringing up gun control, its a big issue here these days, most politicians here blame the USA guns coming across the border, so I thought I might bring that up since the topic cant be just a canada thing, will see how it goes....

Post by: Full Bug on January 11, 2006, 06:29:56 AM
I need a kick ass question to ask Dave when I call up, and suggestions?

Post by: Full Bug on January 11, 2006, 07:05:54 AM
WTF is with the calling line? I call up and after 8 rings I just get a recorded question asking me how old I am, and the same question over and over again, WTF?

Post by: Full Bug on January 11, 2006, 07:10:08 AM
Well that was fun, I told the phone dude I wanted to ask Dave about his quote where he said a VH reunion was gonna happen sonner or later, the guy said he would ask Dave and just hung up on me before I could say anything else, nice....
I am just gonna try again to talk about the topic Dave is talking about, what a joke....

Post by: hambon4lif on January 11, 2006, 07:18:40 AM
Any questions that have to do with Van Halen would probably bore the shit out of him, and I can't blame him.

I need a good question, someone help me out, I am on a mission to get on the air this morning.....

His EMT instructor. She adds to the show, but I don't think she's gonna be there that long.

Post by: Full Bug on January 11, 2006, 07:57:04 AM
I dont mind her, but Animal needs to go, he is cool and all but Dave needs to get a good team around him, those two work for now but he needs two people that can work off him better....Its still early, I hope he finds the people he needs to make the show better soon....

Proof that advertising doesn't work?:)

After the 105th advert I still have no fucking intention of watching 'Fun with Dick and Jane' or 'buying' a star from that conman for the SM. I'm gonna take a spot advertising glasses of water from the Atlantic...

Post by: Full Bug on January 11, 2006, 08:09:36 AM
I hear ya Sesh, if I hear another commercial about Dick and Jane I'm gonna puke.....
I am listening this morning, but mostly I listen to the show later in the day on repeat, like it because I dont have to listen to all those crap commercials....

No you're getting mixed up.

Robin is some showbiz woman from LA.

She's never been properly introduced.

Post by: Full Bug on January 11, 2006, 08:38:48 AM
Dave seems to me to be getting alot more comfortable with the show, and the callers who call in, should get better....

Thanx, but dont bother, by the sounds of things you just have to make your calls about the flow of the show, at the moment its about women taking about being with younger men now, got nothing on that topic...Well, actually I do, but I am sick of being cut off.....

I hope thats not a trend that will continue, if Dave is really gonna make a go of this show has to learn to deal with calls like that.....

Yea that would be great, first it could be Kevin Dubrow, then maybe Paul Rubens, then Scotty Waller the singer from Smile, the possibilities are endless.

I guess even Eddie could call on that subject

I'm sure whatever is sent is at least acknowledged, especially if you're listening outside the market, but if there's 'Van Halen' anywhere on it, it's safe to say it got deleted or tossed in the trashcan.
If it's ideas about the show itself, I'm sure they've given it a look.

It just takes some tenacity.

Dave needs to talk about VH--and he has--or the show doesn't stand a chance.

Like it or not, VH and rock 'n roll is what makes David Lee Roth interesting. If not for his music experience, he wouldn't have this job.

I haven't listened to it yet, kind of afraid to. But he was really easy to talk to. Where can I find the link to the last hour? SInce I've been listening live, I haven't used them yet. Is it on the DaveFreefm site?

I wonder how I got thru this without making some sexual proposition to him.

I think even Dave Roth has a finite number of drinking stories.

20 hours a week is a lot of chat, he's rationing them.

Over 6 months or so I think we'll hear them all.

Hey, I think I know what that's about. I've noticed that some of the spots are very dated. And if you're listening carefully, you'll notice that there are very FEW different spots. And there's dead air occasionally for like - oh 30 seconds. (bing bing bing) So I started to wonder if we internet folk were hearing different breaks than the terresterial listeners are hearing.

This is why.

We stream my show live on the internet as well. And we had to do all this technical change crap to be allowed to do so, simply because the advertisers will not allow their commercials to go on the webcast. WHY? You think they'd love the free advertising. NOT! They have to pay residuals to all the actors etc - pay ASCAP for the music they use etc etc etc - per airing of the spot. So they cracked down on that shit hard. What we do is kick control over from Production to Master, just for the commercials, and we put up full screen bullshit and music library crap out on the net. It's a huge pain in the ass. But since the webcast has an audience of about .05 persons, it's just not worth it for the advertisers. If we can ever prove webcasting gets viewers, the other shoe will drop - and we'll end up selling that time too.

Just a thought - is anybody getting it live and not on the net - so we could compare commercials heard?

Post by: Seshmeister on January 11, 2006, 07:23:06 PM
That's interesting.

Is it not easy to show how many people listen to a webcast.

Also a lot of adverts you get on the live stream are edited out on the 'Listen Again' option which is strange, more contractual shit I guess...

Funny thing is that one of the 4 or 5 adverts is advertising a New Years Eve show in a club.

That's not the most focused advertising in the world is it?

Chances are I'm not gonna make it...

First time I listened to Stern I couldn't believe the length of the commercials. Over here they keep them down to a few minutes at a time. I don't understand why the audience just doesn't switch channels.

Post by: SensibleShoes on January 11, 2006, 07:30:37 PM
Well, that was my point. They're filling it with out of date spots that were probably produced in house so there are no voice talent fees. You won't hear any recognizable music on them - and isn't that damned Carrey movie out and gone already? If not, they're the ONE advertiser that bought the internet......And I betcha they're pissing their pants that they got it so cheap and it ended up getting more ratings than anyone imagined.

Post by: hambon4lif on January 11, 2006, 07:32:07 PM
Shoes- evaluate for the folks here if you will.

Do you think this show holds promise? If you compare todays show to the first one, it's changed by leaps and bounds, but from a professional standpoint, give us a breakdown of how it can improve.
From what I understand so far, the actual ratings for it won't be available until April, and he has an ironclad contract with Infinity, but how do you think it can get better.

BTW- If I hear " we may be in a bit of a pickle Dick" one more time, I'm gonna have to buy a new monitor, 'cause this one is getting tossed out the window!

Post by: SensibleShoes on January 11, 2006, 07:45:19 PM
It's hard for me to say Hambon. I do TV, not radio, whole different animal. And everything we do is crap to boot.

I like everything he's done. I think he gets a little one trick pony on the subject matter - four hours on the age of consent is a little much. BUT - only the station has the demographics that show if this is a real "morning drive" product - i.e. people listen in hunks - usually about 30 minutes - the time it takes to drive to work - or if the bulk of listeners are night shifters and stay at home folk. And they won't get the true picture of that til april. The internet is a whole new burr under the saddle - nobody knows how to measure that yet. Some of the changes to format can only be made after that information comes in - and Dave & company find out some important things.

- Who is his audience? Men, women, ages, interests liberal/conservative blah blah blah

- What do they want to hear as opposed to what Dave wants to do - that means focus groups where assholes sit and say - "well I didn't like when he talked about tattoos. I hate tattoos". From this they create programming.

- and how do you split the timeparts up - who is listening when and for how long.

I have to assume radio is measured by meters as well - or did I hear they still have diaries? If it's meters, then they're playing timed format games on top of all this - must have x many minutes of uninterrupted content per quarter hour, go at least one minute past the 20, come in at least 2 minutes before the 15 to drag viewer across the meter click -

I'm speaking russian right now aren't I? Sorry.

Anyway, for content? Fuck, I don't know what he can do better with elements - he's got fairly decent support cast, Brian is fucking great live - I just think they all need to gel a bit more - and decide if one topic can fill four hours in all those major markets. I know what I'd tweak - but fuck kids - this is Buffalo, and I'm Ms. Whitebread. This is a major market gig.

The station has to get overnights - I wonder if I could get my hands on them, and if I could read them if I did.....

Not really. I've been diving headfirst into one of the best broadcasting schools in Illinois, so this is all educational.
The one thing that bothers me about the ads is that they're running them into the ground and may make people who would otherwise listen to the show to shut it off, these 'spots' on the stream will run no less than 3 to 4 times every break, and it's pure overkill. When the numbers come in and the blame game starts, will they point the finger at Daves show instead of themselves? Stern had ads that were repititious, but I don't remember them being this bad.

Post by: Seshmeister on January 11, 2006, 08:22:18 PM
I find Shoes posts on how the US media works interesting but pretty depressing.:)

Is it all about demographics? Roth has the 35-45 market both in his content and his history.

Plus maybe a little 'Pink Pound' as we call it over here for his gay EMT instructer.

I'm sure that Shoes knows more about this than me but is it not the case that 25-35 year olds are the ones advertisors want not the later bracket?

Once you get over 40 they could give a shit if you were dead because apparently at that point your teenage kids start spending the family's disposable income either on themselves or by telling you what tech stuff to buy. That combined with the fact that the 40+ year olds already know what they want and are hard to sway.

Look at it this way. Are you more or less likely to try a new drink now in a bar than you were 10 years ago?

As I said it's a depressing topic for us CVH demographic people.

It's gonna be even worse when you start to see your old icons advertising stair lifts on daytime TV in 15 years time...:(

Cheers!

:gulp:

Can you picture what it would be like if Lou called in?

'Dave, your show sucks'

"Dave, this show seems to be taking the same course as yesterday, which is general political topics. Here's my problem--I haven't laughed at anything I've heard on this show. I don't find these topics particularly interesting, or very funny."

"A morning radio show is supposed to focus on humor and the lighter side of things."

"I'll tell you what I'd like to abort--this show. It's got to start being funny and lighter, with a LOT less politics. If this is going to be the tenor of the show, then it's going to be a short-lived show."

Lets get Lou on the air!!!!

Post by: twonabomber on January 11, 2006, 09:07:40 PM
why is it OK for Lou to constantly gripe about the show not being funny, when he kept ruining our fun threads (the Terri Schaivo thread comes to mind) with his political and religious bullshit? we were having fun and he kept fucking up the threads...

Post by: hambon4lif on January 11, 2006, 09:12:05 PM

Shoes, just listened to Twona's clip- that was great! I have a huge smile on my face right now. Hearing Diamond Dave tell you, "God bless you baby," that was just fucking something else... wild! :beers:

(You were also assertive; when he made the crack about Philippinos and "you know how dangerous they are..." and you responded firmly with, "No, I don't," while he was trying to laugh at it- that took balls!)

When I think of Lou, one thing my late father said to me comes to mind, "There are always going to be people who you might come across in life that that no matter what you do or say will always come across as having a pickle up their ass", or something along those lines, and Lou proves that to be true everyday.....
Its no wonder he doesnt have a girlfriend or future wife, what gal would want to put up with his negative thoughts every day?

You know, I actually fucked that up in the first place by pointing out the kid was probably an immigrant, who the HELL knew where I was going with that, except that in that case he might have been isolated and a target or something - and of course, because Shoes is paranoid as hell, I assumed he was busting on me about my quasi racist statement.

That's quite harsh Bug! I mean, we know he's the way he is, he's very opinionated and he does put up quite a battle for what he does believe in. It's all about accepting people here for what they are, and in a weird way, I'm all for it. He's doing nothing more than exercising free speech and expanding how he feels on any given subject. I never perceived him as being the 'life of the party', and I always manage to sidestep threads when he starts getting preachy(...that's the trick BTW). To go head-up with him and trying to say he's wrong is just as bad as him telling you that you're wrong, you know what I'm saying? There's room here for everyone, the ones who lead a sheltered existence, as well as the shameless bastards who've made life just one big hedonistic feast like myself. The best attention you can give to him is no attention if you don't like what he has to say, but let's not contemplate about what a miserable son of a bitch he is....it's just not fair!

First time I listened to Stern I couldn't believe the length of the commercials. Over here they keep them down to a few minutes at a time. I don't understand why the audience just doesn't switch channels.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ is why they were so long (18 minutes/hour--though I think they added even more). I always switched stations or played a few songs on a CD in the meantime.

Now on Sirius, he's reading some of them live in a way that it blurs the line between show & commercial.

Well the "bugging" mafia at the station ain't too thrilled about the FIRST call. Unfortunately, I'm at work for 3 hours of Dave's 4 hour show. I could catch maybe 15 min streaming before I left the house in the AM.

My cell may be a better option, but work is well aware of my Dave fixation, and I"m not sure how bad they're gunning for me right now.

Of course, it could be a good employment strategy to keep calling Dave.....He needs a female with some skills.....;).......always wanted to live in NYC.....I think.....
