I have to say there is a serious risk this may be the worst Oscars in living memory - 4 hours of self flagellation about the inherent racism of the world, a host that has maybe jumped the shark and a very predictable outcome in all the main categories. I've seen 5/8 best picture nominations so far and none blew me away - The Revenant is going to win.

Anyhoo I'm a film fan so I have to look despite the Hollywood nonsense that goes on every year.

Gotta work, won't be watching. Out of the best picture nominees, I've only seen The Martian.

I wonder if they'll have Chris Rock on a short leash. Or no leash, and he says enough to not get invited back.

The revenant , I've seen it twice because my wife made me watch it the second time , it lasts a year. It makes you feel cold and miserable and to be honest natural light go fuck yourself if there was one more shot of looking up to the sky through trees I was gonna go chin a bear.
The should give Leo his Oscar just so the poor cunt can stop putting himself through this torture porn.

Even though I thought Michael fasbender was better in Steve jobs. And he would get it if he had of been attacked by Kate winslet and had to survive and make the iPhone.

The natural light didn't bother me "too" much...just a couple of scenes. What really bothered me was when they were in a boreal forest, then suddenly in a rain forest, and then back to boreal. I could tell exactly which scenes were shot in BC when they had to change locations due to a Chinook melting all the snow where they were shooting in Kananaskis. Drove me crazy!!!

"4 hours of self flagellation about the inherent racism of the world"

Yes, these poor actors being ignored because Hollywood is sooooo racist. It's almost as retarded as Farrakhan saying black ball players in the NBA are slaves. Wjere do I sign up so I can get my fair share of this discrimination and oppression? I'll be more than happy to come home and cry on a stack of money and sit in my big ass mansion and moan about how I'm so mistreated.

I never claimed to be one of the "people". You're talkin to the Rolex wearin, diamond ring wearin, kiss stealin, wheelin dealin, jet flyin, limousine ridin sonofagun! I can't help it that I'm so damn tanned and pretty! So you keep your micro aggressions to yourself, you pasty white skinned Chalkasian!

Now if you'll excuse me, I have a tanning appointment in 15 minutes and it takes at least five for me to strap on all my weapons and pick out a watch. And I think that today I will wear one of my early 1980s vintage Seiko divers so I can show solidarity with the common folk and with the mistreated in Hollywood.

Bwahahahaha!! Like I'm gonna go to the tanning bed wearing a fuckin Seiko...I crack myself up...

Ok, in all seriousness, I've only seen about 7 hours of Revenant. What I saw was really good but I literally passed out after a while, probably cause I had just sat through all 3 hours of Hateful Eight. Hateful Eight was a great friggin movie. Really, really good. I' going to attempt to watch the rest of Revenant this weekend. Oh, and that wasn't no CGI bear - Leo actually fought a real bear and kicked its ass. Because he's a bad ass, aside from his tree huggin Hippie bullshit which I choose to overlook since he's one of my favorite actors. I mean, he's no Tom Cruise but he was awesome in Wolf of Wall Street. Which should win picture of the year every year until the end of time. Unless there's a good Tom Cruise movie out that year.

But haven't you heard? He witnessed global warming in Calgary. All of a sudden it got so warm that all the snow started melting and they had to find a new location to shoot.

No, Leo. That's a Chinook, lol.

Ah, I'm all for cutting back pollution and trying to make coal plants really clean and maybe sending all the radioactive waste from all our power plants to like the moon or some place that's not here. Like the Middle East. But Leo is the last person to be going around crying about the planet when he spends the whole summer on his oil tycoon buddy's yacht lol. Which is what I'd be doing if I was him. But it's kinda like the beer commercials where they say "Please always drink responsibly". Well, it's kinda hard to do when you sell my favorite cheap beer in a damn 30 pack!

I can't even remember the last time I watched the Academy Awards from start-to-finish...probably close to 20 years. Have seen the odd clips from various ones here and there...

I've found over the last decade or so I'm generally not seeing a large percentage of movies that are getting the nominations for various categories anyway, so I have no reason to bother watching the award ceremonies. And the movies I do see that end up being nominated for Oscars are ones that I saw before they were nominated anyway: put it this way, if I'm on the fence about seeing a movie and it happens to be released around the time the nominations are announced and it gets a nomination, that fact won't sway me one way or the other.

How good The Revenant is seems to depend on how big a screen you see it on.

Local writer on The Revenant:

As we approach the total fabulosity that is the annual Academy Awards ceremony Sunday night, I find that I can barely dredge up even mild excitement about it.

Maybe it's the #OscarsSoWhite issue. Maybe it's that "The Revenant," a movie I loathed, is poised to win a lot of the awards. Maybe it's the very idea of ranking films at all, the absurdity of declaring one better than all the others.

Whatever the cause, I've had so little interest in the Oscars over the past few weeks that I've started to wonder: Do they really matter?

http://www.cleveland.com/moviebuff/index.ssf/2016/02/oscars_2016_why_the_academy_aw.html#incart_river_i ndex

And this morning I see there is a All Def Movie Awards, presented by Russell Simmons and hosted by Tony Rock. It'll run against the Oscars.

What - they don't have a category for biggest ho??

I wonder what's in their swag bags they hand out? Rolling papers, a bag of weed, three 40s of Old English, and a jewel covered pimp cup? Which come to think of it...would probably be better than what they give you at the Oscars.

I too haven't bothered to watch the Oscars for the best part of nearly 15 years, but I did watch last year's because of the films that were nominated all enjoyed. (Glad they gave it to BIRDMAN)

I haven't seen THE REVENANT yet - but heard it's visually well done.

SPOTLIGHT was a good drama, and should win the Screenplay award.

Surprised to see Sylvester Stallone being nominated, must've put up a decent enough performance...

Generally, I'm not a gambler - but a local syndicate here has put BRIDGE OF SPIES at 200/1 for the Best Picture award. Now, I certainly don't think it'll win it, but it was a damn good film (of course because it's Spielberg) and not representative of those odds. So, I couldn't help myself putting some dosh down on it purely for the 'just in case' factor...

TRUMBO deserved a nomination for Best Picture and Screenplay, IMHO.

Yeah he was pretty funny. I still find it absolutely laughable to call Hollywood racist. The Oscars? A case can be made for that but the rest of Hollywood? Did Chris Rock forget he gets paid big bucks to play pretend? Wasn't one of the biggest movies of the summer a movie about a bunch of thugs who wrote stupid songs about bitches and whores and cop hatin? Odd, he must have forgotten about that.

I wish I could make a couple million bucks a year and then be ignored by the Oscars. I'd cry on a stack of money and then rip off a couple bills to pay for my high end hooker. And the massive amount of booze I'd be drinking. In a fabulously expensive hotel room. Did I mention there would be hookers?

I haven't watched it...but come on! It's a stupid premise for a movie! Lemme see, some doctor figures out that if you play professional football you might wind up with a concussion or brain damage? Really? No shit! And honestly WHO GIVES A FUCK?? That's why they get paid the big bucks. Sure, make the helmets all bad ass and super protective. Increase the effectiveness of the pads, I'm all for that. Then shut the fuck up about it. Those moherfuckers know what the risks are and they CHOOSE to play the game. I don't need no stupid movie to tell me about how gigantic men who bash their heads against each other might wind up with dain bramage.

Also I hear Will Smith is pretty shit in it and his accent is all over the place.

I'm not a big fan, I find his schtick a bit tiresome.

As far as the helmets go I think the argument is that they should get rid of them and go back to the old style ones.

It's like boxing, before there were modern gloves no one got killed in the ring because you would break your hand hitting someone's face that hard so it was mainly body blows.
