Would take me longer to set up my phone, so I've been listening to the classic rock station Stern used to be on. So far I've heard Gimme Three Steps six times. And they must be running the same songs in sequence, twice I've heard .38 Special's Rockin' Into The Night right after it.

[Terrestrial radio] has been devolving for years.

I still listen to it when I'm driving, mostly because I haven't gotten around to getting Sirius, but my first real wakeup call was hanging with a friend who had purchased a fairly comprehensive satellite radio package, and the quality/tone/style of programming (even keeping in mind this was ten years ago) was just light years better than terrestrial could ever hope to be.

Terrestrial radio now is just the same old lame-ass morning and afternoon zoo shows on virtually every station, with playlists on classic rock/retro stations that remain virtually unchanged from the late 1980s thanks to the gradual takeover of automated, computerized song selections. Often times now I'll opt for driving in silence rather than wading through 10 minutes of commercials to hear yet another playing of:

When WNCX started 30 years ago, they mixed it up a lot more than they do now. Not as pop as their previous format under call letters WGCL, and not as "hard" as WMMS was. Then the classic rock station M105 changed format and WNCX went more traditional classic rock.

They had three different morning shows before picking up Howard Stern in the early 90's. They've had four or five different morning shows since Stern went to Sirius, including DLR...

Played (and broke) many local bands, played punk music before anybody else, but stayed true to the rock format it was build on. They made a documentary called "The American Revolution", that outlines the MIT students inventing stereo FM car radios (and giving them out) so they could listen to the station.

KISW in Seattle probably had a similar "national" reputation back in those days - first radio station outside of LA to play Van Halen, first station in the US to play Ac/Dc, help break all those British acts in the late 70s (The Clash, Elvis Costello, etc.)

Finally got a real stero for Christmas not long after that and listened to that station faithfully until they changed formats in 86 or so. If your shit got airplay on KMET you were probably going to make it big in rock and roll. They had a sister station in Chicago, WMET that kicked ass too. They always sponsored the big concerts and had the best guests on their radio shows. The night time guy, Jim Ladd seemed to know everybody. Still has a nationwide show on satelite radio I think.

One of our maintenance guys drives in more than an hour, from western Pennsylvania. We work 12 hour shifts.

I barely have enough time to do anything when I get home on a work day, and that's only a 12 1/2 hour day with commute. He's more like a 14+ hour day, unless he gets stuck in bad weather or traffic, and it could be a lot longer. There's an alternate route but it's mostly 45 mph roads and about a hundred traffic lights.
