Man records himself asking to use Target women’s bathroom


ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) – A St. Petersburg man who videotaped himself going into a local Target said he was just trying to clarify the company’s bathroom policy.

That video has since gone viral. It was recorded on the heels of Target’s recent announcement about its policy.

“(We) welcome transgender team members and guests to use the restroom or fitting room facility that corresponds with their gender identity … Everyone deserves to feel like they belong,” Target said.

Both the local video and Target’s policy have come under fire.

More than 800,000 people have signed a petition from the American Family Association saying they will boycott the big-box chain because of the policy.

Andy Park says he went to the St. Petersburg store on Park Street Friday. Park told News Channel 8 he was “dressed like a man” and originally thought the policy was a hoax.

He showed News Channel 8 the video he says he took going into the store and talking with a manager.

News of the president’s forthcoming directive requiring educators to let students use bathrooms according to their gender identity — not their birth certificate — offered a welcome set of guidelines to some school administrators Thursday night about how they ought to proceed amidst the ongoing legal and cultural bathroom battle embroiling the nation.

“It really gives some peace to what it is principals have been feeling all the while,” said Bob Farrace, public affairs director for the National Association of Secondary School Principals. “Principals really need to make sure the federal government has their back.”

But in many living rooms, public forums and politically charged spaces across the country — including the Texas GOP convention — Obama’s decree has merely intensified an already raging debate about gendered bathrooms and who should and should not be allowed to use them.

Man who choked 8-year-old girl in women’s restroom stokes alarm over transgender access

The attack by a man on an 8-year-old girl in a women’s restroom last week in a Chicago restaurant is raising alarm about opposite-sex access to public facilities in the name of transgender rights.

Police say the man, 33-year-old Reese Hartstirn, entered the women’s room May 7 at Jason’s Deli in Chicago’s South Loop and choked the girl until she passed out.

The girl’s mother, who was in the adjacent stall, heard her daughter’s screams and rescued her, while restaurant patrons held the suspect until police arrived, according to WLS-TV in Chicago.

Opponents of laws allowing opposite-sex public-facility use argue that they increase the danger of such attacks because they allow men, transgender or not, to enter women’s rooms unchallenged.

Police: Man choked girl, 8, unconscious in store bathroom



CHICAGO - Police say a Chicago man followed an 8-year-old girl into a store bathroom Saturday and choked her until she became unconscious.

CBS Chicago reports that the girl became separated from her mother inside a store and went into the restroom, allegedly followed by 33-year-old Reese Hartstirn. Moments later, the girl's mother heard her scream, and ran to the bathroom, where she allegedly found Hartstirn carrying the unconscious girl into a stall.

Police said Hartstirn pushed the girl's mother when she tried to rescue her, and other customers at the store helped detain the man until police arrived. He allegedly took a swing at a police officer while he was being booked at the Central District police station.

The girl was taken to Comer Children's Hospital for treatment.

Hartstirn was charged with aggravated kidnapping, aggravated battery of a child, and aggravated assault of a police officer, police said.

Cook County Jail records show Hartstirn is being held without bail. His next court appearance is scheduled for May 16.
