FEMA and the Department of Education didn't exist until Jimmy Carter was president. We seemed to educate people better before we had the Department of Education and we seemed to deal with disasters and rebuild before we had FEMA. The Fedral government was never supposed to run such departments and agencies anyways.

NASA is a leftover from the Cold War and the space race. It's become another incompetent federal agency that really has no clear goal anymore. The general public have lost interest in exploring space and there is no longer an urgency to beat the Ruskies in a rocket and spacecraft building competition. When you have hemoraged jobs and have $20 trillion in debt and falling apart infrastructure the focus goes back to the home front. If we could get to places that were as nice or nicer than this planet then there would be some public motivation to get there but what we are seeing is the moons and planets we can get to are just barren wastelands. So the only few people who give a damn are the type of people who want to go to Mars just because it's there. Not particularly exciting.

NASA is important because the elitest rich fucks are going to need another planet (or at the very least, a moon colony) to run away to when they have made this planet completely uninhabitable. The Koch Brothers and others of their ilk are spending billions to fund anti-science stupidity, while all time looking forward to science giving them the eventual escape route from the inevitable results of their own greed.
