Election results: Exit polls suggest Jeremy Corbyn could be Prime Minister as leader of progressive alliance
Ben Kentish

Jeremy Corbyn could be on course to become the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, according to the general election exit poll.

The shock poll predicts the Conservatives will fall short of an overall majority, despite beginning the campaign with a huge lead.

As leader of the party that seems certain to win the most seats, Theresa May will have the first opportunity to form a government.

However, should she prove unable to pass key legislation such as a budget or Queen's Speech, Mr Corbyn could be asked by the Queen to attempt to form a government in coalition with the Liberal Democrats, SNP and Greens.

The exit poll suggests such a coalition would have 323 seats, which, if Sinn Fein follows its tradition of not taking its seats in Parliament, would be enough for a tiny majority. In contrast, the Conservatives are predicted to have won 314 seats.

The poll, conducted by election expert Professor John Curtice for the BBC, Sky and ITV, stunned the country by predicting Theresa May's gamble in calling an early election could have backfired.

However, the 2015 exit poll underestimated support for the Conservatives and predicted they would win 15 fewer seats than they actually did. Should that prove to be true again, Ms May would have a majority similar to the one she held before the election.

If the poll is correct, though, Mr Corbyn could find himself set for Number Ten. Labour has ruled out forming a formal coalition but could find itself as the biggest party in an informal "confidence and supply" arrangement in which the other parties support a Labour budget and Queen's Speech but do not formally take part in the government.

The Liberal Democrats have said they will not form any formal coalitions in the case of a hung parliament, while the SNP has said it would be willing to be part of a "progressive coalition".

Nicola Sturgeon, the party's leader, previously told the BBC: “If there was to be a hung Parliament of course we would look to be part of a progressive alliance that pursued progressive policies.”

Former Lib Dem leader Sir Menzies Campbell re-iterated the party's position on Thursday night, telling the BBC: "Tim Farron made it very clear: he said no pact, no deal, no coalition. We’ve had our fingers burned by coalition, I don’t need to tell you that."

"I find it very, very difficult to see how Tim Farron would be able to go back on what he’s previously said and indeed to persuade the membership of the Liberal Democrats that a coalition would be a good idea from our point of view."

Green Party co-leader Caroline Lucas said she would be willing to help support a Labour-led coalition.

......as exit polls suggest Conservatives fail to achieve majority
Andrew Griffin
independent.co.uk (http://www.independent.co.uk/News/uk/politics/jeremy-corbyn-theresa-may-election-results-latest-conservatives-majority-hung-parliament-a7780551.html)

Jeremy Corbyn has called on Theresa May to resign.

Ms May should "go and make way for a government that is truly representative of this country", the Labour leader said at his election count. The exit poll and recent results suggest that no party will win a majority in parliament, despite Ms May having called the campaign in an attempt to strengthen her position.

"The prime minister called the election because she wanted a mandate," he said. "Well the mandate she's got is lost Conservative seats, lost votes, lost support and lost confidence. I would have thought that is enough for her to go actually."

Accepting victory after holding Islington North with his biggest ever majority, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said: "Politics has changed. Politics isn't going back into the box where it was before. People have said they have had quite enough of austerity politics."

Just a couple of minutes after Mr Corbyn made the call, Ms May arrived at her own election count. Immediately, journalists asked whether the prime minister would be resigning.

Corbyn is like a more extreme version of Bernie. He's done a lot better than people expected.

The media have been fucking unbelievably biased against him, all the headlines today were calling him a terrorist because he talked to the IRA 30 years ago. The language was shocking and well done to people ignoring their lies.

The original founder of the Monster Raving Lunatic Party died a few years ago but his party lives on.

Personally I would have voted for Lord Buckethead...

If you like corbyn so much name two of his albums .
And Crystal Palace denying that Theresa May is on the way ( footy joke)
Although anything with Eddie Hitler as Paul nuttal gets an honourable mention.

Weird election no one wanted any of them and that's what we end up with .
It's simple ,honestly ... appeal to the youth vote and say something about tuition fees , everyone is no old and fucked so say something about NHS. Brexit is so 2016 get over it.

I liked mr fishfingers policies :)

Yeah, I see you all have that urban vs rural bullshit going on over there too. I crashed out too early last night to monitor the later results, but it looks like the "suburbs" came in late to help Maggie Jr. out.

So I guess they're calling this a "hung parliament", with no party ending up with the 326 seats required for a majority, but the Tories unfortunately in the lead. Which of course means coalition building with the minor parties. So looking at the numbers here.....

SNP - 35
LibDems - 12
DUP - 10
Sinn Fein - 7
Plaid Cymru - 4
Green - 1
Independent - 1

So which of these minor parties are likely to back Labour and which are likely to back the Tories? I'm guessing May is finished as PM no matter which party ends up "in charge", since this whole election was envisioned by her as a "power grab" and obviously failed, costing her party 32 seats in the process.

The answer to your question is Northern Ireland which is a ridiculous place.

These days the they all vote for the most extreme parties they can find so on one side you have Sinn Fein who refuse to attend the fucking parliament so effectively a completely wasted vote and on the other the lunatic reactionary fuckwit DUP who are Pat Robertson levels of cuntery. Against gay marriage actually just against gays in general, evolution, climate change denial and a bit of corruption thrown in. They are like a party of hateful televangelists.

Needless to say May has immediately formed an alliance with them giving her enough votes thanks to a bunch of old Scottish pricks voting some Conservatives in for reasons which are as complicated as they are stupid.

So in other words, after Theresa May started talking like Cheeto about terrorism, she forms a coalition with a party literally founded by terrorists?? (Ian Paisley's UDA) But they're right wing terrorists, so that's different. (much like the white supremacists in the US)

Those weapons are wasted on a panicky, dumb military led by incompetent royalist officers who wear depends to battle so no one can see the shit stains on their camo-pants as they run away from poorly armed Yemenis they should outgun at least 5-1! If you look at their line-up of weapons, it's rather hysterical. Very impressive to the average person, but for armchair military analysts - it's a silly fucking redundant mishmash collected by dickheads trying to instill fear into Iran and impress their own population, and yet instill fear into them as well. The logistics alone will sink them of maintaining so many different weapons systems that are redundant. Their main mission is to protect the House of Saud from internal insurrection, but an actual serious shooting war with a major enemy like Iran, the demoralized and abused troops that lack much of a cohesive national identity and are usually pissed on by their corrupt commanders will run away...

I think in the most basic terms we are on the wrong side.

We should be allied with Iran. Anything that you would criticize Iran for is 5 times worse in Saudi and what power the radical religionists in Iran have is built on a hatred of past sins of the US and UK who have fucked them over many a time.

FORD

Iran is the most natural ally against all this Wahabbist Sunni fundaMENTAList bullshit that Al Qaeda and the ISHoles are based upon. The only reason the US & UK won't side with Iran over the Sunnis is because then they would have to tell NuttyYahoo to fuck off with his 30 year paranoid labelling of Iran as "the next Hitler".

I think oil money is probably a more important factor.

It's an amazing fact that something like 80% of Iranians aren't very religious and don't go to the mosque each week.

And love America and the West in general...

But I imagine that many in the Kingdom of Saud are very much the same way, but they live under autocracy...
