Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson has confirmed that the beloved Canadian progressive rock band is officially a thing of the past, ending hopes for an eventual reunion between himself, drummer Neil Peart, and bassist/keyboradist/vocalist Geddy Lee. In a new column published last week in The Globe and Mail, Lifeson seemed to officially put any lingering hopes for another Rush reunion to bed. “It’s been a little over two years since Rush last toured,” he explains. “We have no plans to tour or record any more. We’re basically done. After 41 years, we felt it was enough.”

In 2014, the trio celebrated their 40th anniversary together with a worldwide farewell tour, dubbed “R40”, immortalized with a concert film/feature-length documentary entitled Time Stand Still. After the tour, Peart announced his retirement, citing chronic tendonitis and other ailments. At the time, Lifeson conceded that while this was likely the “end of touring,” he and Lee still had desire to play together. “[Neil’s] shoulders were hurting, his arms were hurting, his elbows, his feet, everything,” Lifeson said to Rolling Stone in 2016. “He didn’t want to play anything less than 100 percent. He was finding it increasingly difficult to hit that mark on this last tour. So, all those things combined, I get it. I’m disappointed and I think Geddy [Lee] is very disappointed and we’d love to continue this tour a little bit longer, but we’re off now.”

Watch a trailer for Time Stand Still below:

Even still, he left open the possibility that the band could reunite for one-offs or shorter runs. “Maybe next fall or something like that, we’ll plan something,” he predicted. “We took a year off before the last tour and we didn’t discuss anything about the band or work, and everybody had a great time, and we came back from that.”

Now, with Peart enjoying retirement, and Lifeson and Lee both working on a variety of other new projects, it seems we can let go of the idea that Rush might rock again.

Rush can't exist without Neil Peart, and apparently the tendonitis has hit him pretty hard. When that shit hits your shoulder, your arm's essentially paralyzed. Putting on a shirt in the morning is painful enough. Playing the drums like he does has to be fucking impossible in that condition. It sucks, but I'm not surprised they're calling it quits after that.

Geddy could always join Yes, I guess.....

It also sounds like Geddy and Alex are suffering from forms of arthritis be it from an autoimmune condition or just good old osteoarthritis...

Well, that's just fucking great news! Expect anther onslaught of re-re-re-re-re-re-released "best of" compilations for the next fucking 10 years.

Fuck them.

I wish some kind of fucked-up disease would prevent any reunion of that pricky, shitty band called Oasis.

A terminal one for the singer.

Wait these are Canadians, should they not all know Tom Sawyer off by heart by the age of 8?

Reading the thread title, I THOUGHT Lifeson had already said a couple of years ago that the band were winding down. Seems to be just a reconfirmation of that.

Yeah, not really a shame. In the sense that the band had a long run, kept the definitive lineup , were still able to represent their back catalog live well in terms of proficiency throughout their touring years. I mean, better they bow out than keep chugging on at less than 100%.

Now I hear Ozzy is embarking on a two year "farewell tour" jaunt that will take him in to 2020 - although he'll still "be active in the music business and still perform on occasion": unsure how any of that constitutes a "farewell" - and Ozzy has been sounding like shit for years now. How badly do people want to see old acts that can't cut the mustard anymore? At least Rush is retiring with their dignity intact.

I think the previous statement was no more live but possibly some recording, this one seems to be no more nothing.

The way I see it Rush did 10 years of dotting the i's and crossing the t's of their career and bowed out perfectly. By the end there was no excuse if you were a fan to have not had a chance to see them and the live and studio recordings were all great.

Compared to Van Halen....

Oh, to be sure, Rush have done PLENTY of live work from roughly...what...2003 to 2014. More than ample opportunities for those who wanted to see them to have done so.

Van Halen have done 3 US tours with Roth since Roth rejoined the group. I'd say that I feel a bit sad for any fans of the band who live in Europe or the UK, in that Van Halen can't be bothered to go there, but the truth is you weren't missing much: Van Halen Mach 4 certainly wasn't as competent a live act in comparison to CVH.

Neil knows when it was time to retire. Geddy should do the same.

Geddy came out with his book The Beautiful Book of Bass. Watch. Gene Simmons will come out with a book called Gene's Beautiful Book of Ass covering his years of tagging anything female that moved and didn't move. Then the book gets ol Geno in trouble with the Me Too! movement and you can hear Ace's cackling laugh as Gene is crucified by the media and money diggers press charges.

A classy, classy way to call it a day. Particularly when one thinks of countless other bands who have done "farewell tours" - only to continue touring afterward - or are still out there chugging along at an age where they can't physically do the material justice...or have only fractions of the original/definitive lineup.

:D

Maybe he read about Neil's cancer and thought the article was talking about him...

I'm trying to feel bad for the guy...I don't wish terminal cancer on almost anyone...but I will also say in passing that I've heard at least three clips of him wishing a horrible death on people simply because he doesn't agree with them.

If Krush Limberger dies before 2020 is over, it won't be that bad of a year.

Since the only way to get rid of such assholes is for them to die off, then yes, let them die. Moscow Mitch, the chump, Bill Bar-B-Q, and all the rest of those fucking assholes.

Lady Lindsey is not included because he is doomed to failure in next week's elections. Therefore, he will beat the Grim Reaper by getting out of office without having to cross the river Styx.
