A Virginia Beach schoolteacher running for Congress who posted an online video sawing apart an AR-15 rifle is now under investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, according to ABC 13 News.

Karen Mallard (D) says she destroyed the rifle, the kind used in the Parkland, Fla., school shooting last month, to take "a personal stand for gun safety," and handed the weapon over to the police after filming the video.

On Thursday, Virginia Beach Police said they had received the gun and were waiting for it to be picked up by the bureau, which investigates the illegal use of firearms, explosives and other illicit substances.

Critics of the video have suggested that the progressive candidate may have violated the law under Virginia legislation that prohibits rifles modified to be less than 26 inches.

On Twitter, Mallard blamed "right wing trolls" for a "coordinated effort" using "error-filled talking points" from the National Rifle Association to accuse her of breaking the law, which she denies.

She cut the barrel but she also cut the gas tube. It's still a rifle but now it will only fire one shot because the action won't cycle. Also by firing that one shot high pressure hot gas is now going to be directed at the shooter's face. She should have cut through the receiver. It wouldn't fire at all and since the ATF considers the receiver the firearm she legally would have actually destroyed it. cutting the barrel just made the rifle illegal due to having a sawed off barrel on it and possibly making it dangerous to shoot. So if you are going to film yourself destroying an expensive rifle you or your husband paid good money for, cut the receiver. That's how you properly destroy a firearm.

But you don't need a fancy table vise and saw to destroy an AR-15. Here's how to do it. Pull the back receiver pin. Swing open the action. For good measure pull out the bolt assembly and toss that. Find a good solid post or tree. Take the opened up rifle and swing it hard at the tree or post and bust off the front hinge and now you will have a busted lower receiver and separated upper receiver and barrel assembly. You can use the barrel to beat the pro gun NRA assholes with. A AR-15 barrel makes a damn fine club.

Exactly. They still get the money from a gun sale and better yet. When the product is destroyed by the buyer there is no liability. They would love to sell AR-15's to such customers.
