As for the "yellow vests", as far as I've been able to notice, they started acting when the government decided to raise the price of petrol (gasoline) once again. 65% of the price are taxes.
When I had to stop at a roundabout, I sometimes had a talk with them. I told them I found it debatable that they'd started because of that, because I'm as opposed to that fucking stick-in-the-ass government, who had already enacted foul, unfair laws that would have deserved way more... And they answered that it was just "the last straw". Meh...

Roughly, about one third of the "yellow vests" are far-right nerds, another third are extreme left-wing hotheads, and the rest are poujadists.
Mainly, none of them can really give a well-spoken speech. But...

But they managed to get measures from that government that quickly wilted: they gave up on the new upcoming rises of the price of petrol/gasoline and decided to raise the minimum wages by €100, most importantly.
That will trigger more protest from other layers of society, those who earn a little more... Policemen have recently started a strike, and knowing how stinking the coming reforms in education are, teachers will probably react as well, as their wages have been frozen since 2010.
I remember speaking with Greek teachers whose wages had been divided by 2 in 2012, and well, the situation isn't that bad here in comparison.

The yellow vest movement has started to wane. But seeing how Macron, that jerk, gave up and announced a few strategic measures to shut them up, other actions should take place in the coming months.

Just to bring a little factoid to the French surrender cliche crap.

Although a much smaller country France had more military fatalities in World War One alone than the total losses in the history of the US including the Revolutionary War, US Civil War, WW1, WWII, Vietnam and all the rest.
