View Full Version : Your favourite guitarist

Mr Badguy

I know this is a DLR/Van Halen related site and I really like EVH and some of Dave`s guitarists, but they ain`t my favourites.

I know some people in here will go apeshit, but I bet there are a few others who have different idols or influences.

For my top guitar player ever, I would have to pick Steve Howe of Yes/Asia fame.

I can pick up tab and just about play anything that most of the shredders can play but when you see some of the shit that Howe does, it makes your mind boggle.

Sometimes it seems that he goes out of his way to play something different to the cliched guitar parts in rock music and when you hear him play you can tell who it is.

That`s the sign of a true artist.

Who will you pick?

Well my favorite guitarist is still EVH, but Jimmy Page is a close 2nd.

SO TRUE...his guitar work on his more 'metal' albums before he "got the blues" is incredible, and you can hear his influence MASSIVELY in players like John Sykes, Vivian Campbell and Phil Collen of Def Leppard...hell, when they first gained prominence they were ALL playing some of his licks nearly VERBATUM.....that's also where Zakk Wylde got his signature low-string harmonic "pings" (as he calls them) from....whether he'd admit it or not....

For me, I'd have to say:
EVH
Rhoads
Lynch
Gary Moore (and the afforementioned former 'clones')
Hendrix
SRV
Page
and Jason Becker was nothing short of AMAZING in his prime...still blows my mind...I have this vid up on my MySpace page...I watch it every time I start thinking I'M hot shit....:D

Yeah, he's a badass. And he's STILL GETTING BETTER. The guy has not stopped progressing as a player since the 60s.

And oh yeah, so much for my original teacher's assertion that "Holdsworth doesn't tap". :baaa:

This is a list of some of my fav guitarslingers:

Eddie Van Halen(not the new pornoshit)
Jake E. Lee(still plays great)
Zakk Wylde(No rest for the wicked and No more tears is the best he's done, and Pride & Glory of course)
Johnny Winter(in the 70's)
Pete Townshend(still plays great)
Joe Bonamassa(the best crossover bluesplayer in years)
Gary Moore(both the hardrockstuff and the bluesstuff)
Jimmy Page(almost everything he's done is great, maybe not the Death Wish-soundtrack though)
Prince(one of the most underrated guitarist ever)
Michael Schenker(i don't like UFO so much but his solowork with MSG is very good)
Ace Frehley(the reason that i, and maybe a couple of other kids, decided to become rockstars!)

This is just a few.

Ed inspired me to pick up the guitar but other than a general business in my playing there's not a lot of his evident in my playing. Same goes for The Edge and Andy Summers - I don't sound like them but I wish I could.

Steve Jones was a big inspiration especially when I first started trying to play.

Porl Thompson and Robert Smith are plenty evident in my playing.

Love the way Lou Reed plays.

Scotty Moore always meant a lot to me.

Stole liberally from Chris Isaak and Hershel Yatovitz.

Those would be the big components of my style. I've got little flavors from loads of other people from Maiden to Johnny Ramone, Peter Buck, Jonny Greenwood, Springsteen, Dylan. It all comes together in the end.

I'll skip the SRVs, Jimis, and Claptons because much like salt and pepper they always get added to taste.

Top five for shits & giggles

#1 Billy Gibbons – ZZ Top or Terry Kath – Chicago (If he hadn’t repainted his house with brain chunks and made more albums I’m sure more people would be talking about him)

#2 Brian May – Queen (he sounds so good he almost makes me want to try and build a strange looking guitar with a shit load of switches)

#3 Slash – GnR (Top Hat Biatch! Nuff said)

#4 Steve Stevens or Billy Duffy – The Cult (take your pick I dig them both)

#5 Esteban – QVC & Home Shopping Network (Don’t hate, if you practice really hard you to can play “House of the rising sun, & wear a black Pirate Outfit, & sell shitty ass guitars on TV......... I’m shocked he doesn’t sell an official Esteban

Edit edit edit Last minute thought

#6 Joe Walsh (because drugs are goooooood)
