Eddie doesn't look right playing those Wolfgangs. In my mind he only looks like Eddie when he's playing those old striped Strat guitars.

I agree 100%. I have a Wolfie, and it is a great axe. Never let me down in a gig yet. But to see Eddie play the "old school" guitars again....it's priceless. The striped Wolfies are konda cool, though....it's the stripes man, it's the stripes!

I thought the Ernie Ball music man fit him and his image. But the Peavey's never really suited him.

I can't believe no one else isn't disgusted by this pathetic cash grab...A shitty basswood body with a strat neck and single humbucker starting bid over $5000...is Ed that broke or that greedy? Guys like Vai and Clapton auction off gear all the time...it fetches thousands...and they give it all to charity and to raise money for there charity organizations....This reeks of the Gene Simmons school of scamming your rich lawyer sheep fans.....Ed is really showing his true colors with this one

I agree 100% man! Utter BULLSHIT! What made Ed unique back in the day is anyone else looked like A COMPLETE TOOL playing a guitar that looked like his. And he took alot of time and effort to make sure nobody sold anything that looked like his spit-and-chicken wire guitars. Now, he'll let ya' for a piddly 5K?!?! FUCK THAT CRACKHEAD MOTHERFUCKER!!!!! OK...

It sucks that they're expensive as hell, but he's Eddie Van Halen for cryin out loud & how many guitarists take the time to stripe & play an entire handful of guitars to make available to the public.

Do I want one? Damn straight.

Can I afford one? The investment now may pay off later.

I'm not biting, though...if he did this 3 years ago (even without playing them live) I would have in a heartbeat, but coupled with this cash grab of a tour and joke of a greatest hits album, it just too.....

corporate......

and that's where it stops being Rock & Roll, man.

Email received today, I thought I would share. I updated the current EVH guitar Ebay bid prices. – jag

EVH Art Guitars Series and other information
From LAMetalGod: 07.14.2004

As I indicated last month, Fender (FMIC), who owns Jackson-Charvel (JCMI) signed Eddie and Peavey is not renewing their expired contracts with Eddie due to long-term problems and contract defaults by him. Announcement will be made after the Tour. No slam on Ed, it's just business.

The current fad is doing high dollar, limited production, replica “Guitar God” and vintage guitars. Fender did very well on the Stevie Ray Vaughan #1 Stratocaster replica series, (1) and this is where the idea came for the Eddie Van Halen Art Series guitars. Yes, you will be totally shocked as to the open market prices these replica guitars will bring. Buyers exercising shear want-to-be stupidity, in my opinion.

EVH-JCMI’s main site for the sale is: Click Here (http://www.evh-guitars.com/)
EBay’s main auction page for the sales is: Click Here (http://stores.ebay.com/EVH-Art-Series-Guitars)

Just wait for the classic EVH Red and White striped replica guitar to come up for bid to see some really crazy prices.

I am continually amazed what people will spend on junk like this or the SRV #1 replica strat.

If Ed were dead like SRV, then i could see this as a good thing. But he isn't and quite frankly, Ed's NO SRV.

Then it would have to be some individual selling them off and not a corporate money grabbing, piece of shit profit scam.

Just another notch down the pole of integrity for Ed in my eyes.

i havent played one of these, but i definitely wouldnt pay the money for them. well, the money they are selling for on ebay. of course, those are signed by him and played during a concert form this tour. supposedly anyway. i do know at the last NAMM show (music convention for companies and retailor's) they were selling them to music outlets. just regular charvel's unsigned and built and painted in the factory. i believe it was 2 or 3 grand. still too much money. i have built and painted EVH guitars for myself for a lot less money than this crap. and they all sounded great. but, thats just my opinion. of course you could call me a hypocrite becasue i just bought an actual kramer guitar that ed used to own. but thats different! lol. you can see the pics in the "gear street forum" under "can i post pics of my guitar" or something like that. my apologies for not having the link.

The bodies are made of Basswood, laminated in 3 pieces:

- with a plain-grained Maple veneer, front and back, for whatever reason.

Add about 5 ounces of polyester, 40 ounces of Old English 800 with some fool and his tape.

Add tour chilled on rocks, served with Ebay and/or your local Jackson dealer.

Polyester resin paint is cured chemically the same way bowling balls are made solid from liquid plastic.

I hate the feel of solidified plastic on my guitars and prefer lacquer whenever possible.

I'm new to the board. I attempted to do a search and did not find any information on this board on these guitars. I hope this isn't a double posting!

It appears that Eddie Van Halen plays 2 different guitars during the shows (during Tattoo and I'll Wait) that he striped and designed. Then he signs them, and dates them. Those guitars end up being sold.

It should be noted that he's been selling stage used guitars since 2004.

Anyone else seen this? Anyone else go any information on this?

A guy mentions previously, but I remember the guitars from last tour that were sold (also Ebay), so I know this isn't a new idea. He plays these for one tune and personally stripes em, signs em, and sells em. If someone would want to pay to have something unique from a guitar legend - I think that's great.

I do remember reading about a guy who bought one from the 2004 tour(I believe) and he said that the stripes were done with sharpie!

That is pretty sweet!

Noting what famous musicians guitars go for at auctions this really isn't a bad deal. You get a guitar you can prove where it was played, that a very famous guitarist played it, autographed it, and striped it . That's more than 3/4 of the journey when you are establishing the value. I'm thinking I may try and get one.

I wonder how much more money Ed makes each night by selling these as a percentage.

I could be wrong but my rough estimate is that they make net after all the costs $100k a night each. I could be wrong on that but it's in that ballpark as a minimum.

Ed's slightly tacky guitar scheme maybe adds 5% to his income then?

If it was me I would do it as a local charity thing in each city which would possibly make more cash anyway because of the free advertising...

No idea what get's made off these. However, he donated 75 of his guitars to LA schools through the Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation.

I have been in contact with ELVH, Inc. about the guitars. Here is some information that was shared with me.

- They are guitars from the current tour and the two before it.
- Eddie did stripe all of them.
- 300 total made
- 2 played per night
- The last 10 to 15 are going to be sold over the next couple of weeks.
- Eddie autographs each.
- Once the last ones are sold there will never be another attempt at this.

Personally, I think its pretty cool that he's doing this. Maybe he makes some coin off it but so what. He's famous and he knows people will pay "big dollars" to own something he created, signed, and played at a Van Halen concert. Heck, the Fender Frankinstein Strat copies the custom shop did went for $15,000.00 to $ 25,000.00. These come in at a much lower price and he played them during a live show. His time is worth a buck or two and I don't fault him for expecting to be paid for his time, and effort.

Trying to own a piece of rock n roll and a guitar played by one of the guitar gods isn't an easy thing to do. Trying not to be taken isn't easy. Over paying for something you really aren't sure is the real deal is a reality. At least your assured of these guitars being "the real deal" on a whole bunch of different levels. If nothing else YouTube shows what guitar got played at each concert.

I'm gonna end up displaying it on a wall with a frame that I'll build around it. The plans I have are to place the signed 1984 album with Eddie's, Alex's, and Mike's signature on it inside, along with the Diver Down album that Dave signed. There will be a few back stage passes from the early 80's shows thrown in there also. Once its done I'll post a picture. I've played it once but will not again. I'm no Eddie Van Halen.

Like I said, you might want to make it so that you can get a hold of it easily...You know, like when you're watching a bootleg and half lit and the only thing missing is you holding one of Ed's guitars...

You might want to, if you can't do it yourself - have someone disassemble it long enough to shoot a coat of clear on the body to preserve the signature. If that's just done with a plain-'ol sharpie on there it's gonna smudge the first time you play it if you're not careful.

$xxxx isn't too bad for something like that, I suppose...

Well just the guitar is worth what? A grand alone? The add the fact that it is an actual STAGE PLAYED by EDDIE VAN HALEN in your town with David Lee Roth and you have the video to prove it of I'll Wait. Worth every cent.

Like I said before, if I had the money to buy a great item like this I would not even hesitate. And it matches the VHII styled one which is pretty dang cool too.

I asked about covering the signature with lacquer. Was informed that it might cause the signature to turn brown in the next several years. Thus, I opted not to have it done. Also, the photo it comes with is not signed. However, it does come with a cert. of authenticity signed by Eddie.

Lastly, I did NOT buy this as an investment. If it goes up in price great. If not I don't care. I purchased it because I'm a Van Halen fan. I wanted to hold a piece of whatever my idea of Van Halen is in my hands. Call it a mid life crisis thing, reliving my youth, or whatever.

I lived the glory days of Van Halen - early 80's to mid 80's are the greatest 5 year span of fun the US ever saw in my lifetime. We were coming out of a major economic down, gas shortages, and everyone in the US thinking and believing we were down and out. Van Halen brought the music that made you feel good, made you want to have a good time, and move forward into a better time. Least, that's the way I remember it. Their music is the soundtrack of my youth.

From what I recall Ed grossed over $1 million in 04 & 07/08 on these EVH Art Series axes. Most were going for $10-15K back then. Plus he hawked one every show.

This tour I haven't seen one go for over $10k yet and appears he's not doing one for every show. So I'd figure his take isn't going to be so great...

I have to wonder if outside of the artsy thing and supplemental income... if his primary motivation isn't more to protect his intellectual property rights for his trademark protections for the stripe pattern. By keeping a periodic product flow it keeps his claim more solid from a legal perspective so he and his legal goon squad can go after little guys trying to sell striped guitars...

The ones I tracked have averaged around $ 9,000.00. Although a few have gone for over $ 10,000.
Like this one:http://www.ebay.com/itm/180900894486?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

I think they would go for more if more people knew Van Halen was on tour. I have friends that I told I went to the St. Louis show in late May and they had ZERO idea the band was on the road. They would have loved to have gone but didn't have a clue they were touring. I came across these guitars by accident. Glad I did. I have no idea he was doing this until 2 months ago.

Interesting point on his rights. However, his property right are established from the trademark and/or copyright filed with the US Government. There is so many goods that EVH puts out that have the stripe on it that he's protected on a daily basis. Whatever the reason I'm glad he's doing it. I got to own a dream.

I thought the Ernie Ball music man fit him and his image. But the Peavey's never really suited him.

The Music Man was a cool custom guitar for sure. He sold out with Peavey. I'm sure it's still a nice guitar. I like the one he is playing on the tour. The flat black is cool. Needs some stripes though. I have a Music Man. Beat to shit ! I don't really play anymore but it looks good in the living room ! Lol.

I thought it was odd it they're only using two springs on the Floyds, but I'm noticing in the few instances where they show rear shots of the guitars seems like they have FU Trem Stopper/Stabilizers installed.

http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m6fw20F5DY1qewlb7o2_1280.jpg

Would make total sense, and you could get away with (using .09s) two springs and a D-Tuna, dive-only.
Here's my set-up for .10 - .52s... this is one of the ones I usually have set up to float, but I like being able to lock it down for re-strings and maintenance.
http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m6bd0kCLIE1qewlb7o1_500.jpg

Just installed one in my oldest Charvel mutt last night for .10-.52 dive-only and a D-Tuna, used 3 springs.
