Brian Young doesn't have the mental capacity to play songs correctly...

Only Steve Vai can play like Steve Vai.

You know not to take me that seriously...

Anyway.. Brian's playing has really improved alot. He's no Edward but he's playing classic Van Halen alot cleaner than he used to. Brian is a choppy player and he lacks the flair that Edward has that makes his lines seem to melt together...

Asa far as playing the Vai stuff.. Brian really shows his limitations... Nuff said without sounding mean...:)

Yeah, it's tough to sound like a shitty, hollow, rhythm player without the same rack that Vai uses.

Yankee Rose has never sounded right live since Vai left.

Actually for some reason it never sounded that great live even with Vai.

Never been able to put my finger on why...

Cheers!

Who cares who's "better". And better yet, who cares what I think?

I do know this, Brian Young plays the VH stuff better live, than Vai ever did. Vai relies too much on the rack, instead of the soul within. Just my opinion.

Because Dave can't sing it live...

Brian Young is no Steve Vai. I saw brian play yankee rose and going crazy and and yes he doesn't nail it. For those who say Vai couldn't play it live go back and listen to some of the bootlegs. The reason it's hard for Brian to play exact is because it is very hard to capture the Vai sound. It is almost the opposite of eddies "brown sound". Vai's sound I've heard described as "clear". I'm not sure how to reproduce that sound but I'm sure it involves a lot of harmonizers.

I say either play it the same or do something interesting, push the envelope or something.

For example I loved what Jake E Lee did with Randy Rhodes solos.

Vai managed it some of the time.

I liked what he did with On Fire.

Cheers!

Exactly Sesh...

Finally a guitarist with a brain speaks up...:)

Now all we need to find is a drummer with a brain.

Might be tricky...:)

Cheers!

Had least Brian knows how to play classis VH.

I bet that drunk Eddie Van Heineken can't even remember how to play half of the songs!!!

Brian's a good guitarist in his own zone. I agree Yankee Rose just doesn't seem to work live... there's a lot of other material that would work live, but for some reason Dave chooses what he does... I'd also like to hear him loosen the strings a bit on some of the VH songs and just let Brian loose to play what he feels rather than going for the same ole leads and stuff.

Vai used a modified '71 Marshall mostly on Dave's stuff, plus a couple Carvin X100 tops which are pretty clean and shimmery with Eventide H3000 harmonizer for octave effects during wahwah and wammy tricks - though for choruse also.

I'd describe Vai's tone as mostly mud without clarity if I had to capture it in words.. never liked his sound. Playings' okay..

Brian's a great guy, and I'm sure even he would tell you he isn't a Steve Vai or EVH. However, he doesn't have too much trouble with the VH stuff....and IMHO he's better than Dave's last guitarist at getting the Ed feel.
