View Full Version : Apart from VH, who is the greatest American hard rock act ever?

Hmm?

I can see there will be a few disagreements here.

For me it`s between Aerosmith, Kiss, ZZ Top, Alice Cooper and Queensryche.

I`ll go for Alice Cooper, band and solo artist.

At least he tried to do something different, unlike Kiss and Aerosmith who have never shifted much from their original sound.

ZZ Top are too faceless and goofy image wise.

Queensryche have been let down by too many inconsistant releases over the last few years.

If only Gregg Giuffria had kept Giuffria going...he could have been contender.

I haven`t included GnR as they only released three original albums in a five year period and don`t have the longevity of the others.

Metallica (Early)

(Assuming you are allowing Metal !)

If not, I guess I would have to go with Kiss....

Aerosmith. Metallica and VH are the only ones in the same league.

The Stones aren't American.

I'd say Aerosmith or Van Halen for hard rock.

That first Giuffria album still sounds great to me!

Haven't heard anything recently about the keyboard wizard since he escaped the studio fire that is delaying his new "solo" project.

Anybody know anymore?

Yeah, I meant rock or metal or anything on the heavy side.

I didn`t include Metallica as they have lost the plot recently (ala Queensryche) and only had one mega selling album, the ones before it being cult favourites and the later ones having limited commercial appeal due to Metallica pleasing themselves.

pleasing or pleasuring themselves?

Not much.

House of Lords recorded an album without him ("The power and the myth" on the Italian label Frontiers) which was apparently rubbish, although it featured the other four original members.

Say what you want but Gregg Giuffria has a magic touch when it comes to melodic rock.

I`d say he`s America`s top keyboard player.

you have to go aerosmith, vh, zz top, metallica as a top as far as rock goes, I dont know if i would put alice cooper in there...what about a skynyrd instead? not a big fan but soutern rock is really credit to their sound. As far as "newer" bands like RHCP, Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Audioslave carrying the torch

Hmm... I'd say ZZ Top and Aerosmith. They've done the most for the latter half of the 20th century.

It`s not a list, if it was I would have posted a poll.

I just wanted to see what everyone thought.

I would say hard rock was music with a strong backbeat, with a distorted or overdriven guitar being the leading instrument and a lot of unison playing between the guitar and bass lines.

Shit, that question should be a whole new thread of it`s own.

Bro,
The "list" was a reference to my shit-for-brains inability to choose
one band, not the subject in any way.

The hard rock flippancy was directed at some poor choices (arguably)
posted in the thread......shit, mine included!

when I said KISS, I was referring to the orignal lineup..
I think it sucks what they do now...

Aerosmith is the greatest American hard rock band ever with Kiss a close second while there's no 80's rock band that deserves the title.

BruinJer

Either Nirvana or GnR... neither are a round today (and don't tell me that GnR is... they're not, that's not GnR!) but the impact on the music scene was only matched by Van Halen in the 70s/80s.

I would have to say KISS. Old Aerosmith was awesome but i hate the new AOR friendly version out now. Of course at least they release new albums and not Best Of's all the time LOL.

Ronnie Van Zant era Lynyrd Skynyrd & Grand Funk Railroad. Like Van Halen these are two other bands that won't release old stuff.

Lynyrd Skynyrd definitely do not get the respect they deserve. To think the R N R Hall Of Shame installs shit bands like The HomRamones or The Clash over LS is fucking travesty. If that plane crash didn't happen they would've gone down as one of the top 5 bands of all time. I'm definitely convinced of that.

KISS
Metallica
GNR
Nirvana
Alice Cooper
The Ramones
Aerosmith

Mezro...a safe list but it is my list...

I think Skynyrd got snubbed for the same reason VH did. Though there's little question the original lineup was legendary, the remaining members have turned it into a fucking joke.

When they couldn't be successful as "The Rossington-Collins Band", they should have called it a day.

Don't be knocking the Ramones and the Clash. They earned their spot in the Hall of Fame. It's not their fault Skynyrd ain't there. The Ramones and the Clash are 10 times the band Van Hagar was.

Yes, but the argument there was the hall of fame, not American bands (despite the overall theme of the thread)
