DNC Lawyers Work To Muzzle Swift Boat Vets' Ad


HUMAN EVENTS has obtained a copy of a letter (see below) which lawyers for the Democratic National Committee and John Kerry have sent to television station managers attempting to suppress the blistering anti-Kerry TV spot created by the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth (click here to view the ad) and first reported here on HumanEventsOnline.com.

The letter claims the ad is "false" and "libelous" and suggests, in not-so-subtle terms, that TV stations should use their "legal authority" to refuse any requests for advertising airtime, stating that "because your station has this freedom [to refuse the ad], and because it is not a 'use' of your facilities by a clearly identified candidate, your station is responsible for the false and libelous charges made by this sponsor" (emphasis added).

As their first piece of evidence of the ad's supposed lies, the DNC/Kerry lawyers claim that the veterans in the ad "purport to have served on Senator Kerry's SWIFT Boat in Vietnam" but, "in fact, not a single one of the men who pretend to have served with Senator Kerry was actually a crewmate of Senator Kerry's." The problem is that none of these men claimed to have served on Kerry's SWIFT Boat. They simply said they "served with John Kerry" -- and they did. The letter goes on to make several more misleading statements about the advertisement, in an attempt to protect Kerry's "war hero" record. Read the full text below.

How does that change what the DNC is doing?

Is anyone suing to shut down Moveon.org? Is anyone suing to pull their ads? After all, Soros is spending Millions on anti-Bush 527s. You know, the ones comparing Bush to Hitler, and the ones continuously calling him a deserter and demanding his military records (the ones that have already been released, by the way). Where's your outrage there? What about the "spirit" of campaign finance reform??? This Ellis guy spent $100K on the anti-Kerry ad. An insignificant speck of money compared to what hollywood and Soros is doing.

Let me ask you guys this... Do you think RNC Lawyers should try to stop the "Boss'" anti-Bush concert? After all, it's going to raise well above the allowed donation amount. And sure enough, doesn't it fly in the face of the spirit of the campaign finance reform law??? Isn't it advertising for a candidate??? I guess they better wrap it up within 60 days of the election, huh?

Maybe now you can see why the campaign finance reform law is so dangerous. It could be interpreted to stop things like this concert, and that is scary shit. I don't agree with Springsteen and Co., but if they want to organize a political concert so be it. This type of stuff is exactly what the framers intended to protect with the First Ammendment (not virtual Kiddie-porn).

The DNC ought to be put in jail for this travesty of trying to quiet the SWift Boat Veterans For Truth ad against Kerry since it shows their intolerence & they're against free speech which should come as any surprise because a couple of Democratic senators have been trying to take legendary radio talkl show host Rush Limbaugh off the air for years in the name of intolerence to free speech!
