BRUSSELS (Reuters) - A cat running loose on a Belgian commercial flight attacked a pilot and forced the crew to turn back to the airport.

The gray cat, named "Gin," broke out of its cage about 20 minutes after take-off and scurried to the cockpit where it scratched the co-pilot, SN Brussels Airlines said Tuesday.

The flight with 62 crew and passengers had left Brussels for Vienna Monday when the cat, a prized animal that travels to cat shows around the world, started wandering around the passenger cabin.

"The passenger was asleep and at that point the cat managed to escape the cage," an airline spokesman said.

The cat managed to slip through the cockpit door as a flight attendant served lunch to the pilots.

The scared animal was "very aggressive and scratched the co-pilot," forcing the crew to return to the airport, the spokesman said.

The passengers were put on another flight to Vienna, without the cat and its owner, who had to take a separate flight there.

LOL @ "Al - Kittya"

The truly hilarious thing about this story is that they actually turned around and returned to the airport just because someone's pet cat was on the loose in the cabin. What kind of pussies (pun intended) were in control of this plane?

Cat hijacker 'not linked' to al-Qaeda
August 12, 2004

A BELGIAN airliner bound for Vienna had to turn back to Brussels 20 minutes into the flight yesterday after an escaped pet cat stormed the cockpit and attacked the co-pilot.

The cat, a tom named Gin with no known links to al-Qaeda, was "very aggressive", SN Brussels Airlines spokesman Geert Sciot said.

An investigation is pending, but it appears Gin escaped from his travelling bag when his owner fell asleep, ran through the cabin and slipped past the open cockpit door as meals were being served to the pilots.

He then became "agitated and nervous" and attacked the co-pilot, scratching his arm.

As Mr Sciot explained: "It's a very nice animal but apparently, sometimes, an aggressive one. It took a long time to catch it."

He added that there were unconfirmed reports that Gin might have been "kicked by somebody in business class" on his way through the cabin.

With his co-pilot fighting off the maddened moggy, the captain ordered the plane back to Brussels.

"We 100 per cent support the decision made by the captain," Mr Sciot said. "Nobody could tell what an agitated cat might do in the circumstances, scrabbling around amid the sensitive equipment in the cockpit."

The BBC reported that Gin's owner was questioned but no action was taken against the cat, who was said to be a frequent flyer and regular entrant in cat shows around the world.

He was permitted in the cabin, as the airline allows pets weighing less than 5kg to be carried on as hand luggage.
